10 am - 3 pm AKT
UAF Wood Center | 1731 South Chandalar, Fairbanks, AK 99775

Job & Internship Fair

For employers seeking candidates from all other majors.

Thursday, February 22, 2024
10 am - 3 pm AKT
UAF Wood Center | 1731 South Chandalar, Fairbanks, AK 99775

By attending UAF’s spring career fairs, you will enjoy the opportunity to build your brand on campus and recruit highly qualified undergraduates, graduate students, and alumni for internships, seasonal, part-time, and full-time employment. Please choose to register for the fair that best suits your hiring needs. If you are recruiting for engineering and computer science positions, and for other types of roles, we welcome you to register for both fairs. There are two separate registration fees.

We strongly encourage you to update your organization’s Handshake profile and post any open positions you may have by Tuesday, February 6. This will give students and alumni an idea of why they should stop at your booth, and will give them a clearer path for following up with you afterward.

Please refer to guide below to help prepare you for UAF Spring Career Fair Week. You will need to be logged into your Handshake account to register for the fair. If you do not already have a Handshake account and need to sign up, please refer to the information below.

Career Services is thrilled to support a variety of organizations in their recruitment endeavors. Please watch the following video for our top tips to engage students and alumni attending University of Alaska career fairs.

Who to expect:

This event is open to all UAF students and alumni. Students are encouraged to attend the fair day that best aligns with their major, but are welcome to attend both days. The majority of attendees are undergraduate students from the Fairbanks area.

The university encourages all students to come as they are regardless of dress or appearance. Students are encouraged to attend as they are rather than miss the opportunity to participate in this career development opportunity. We recognize that a number of students experience homelessness, may not be able to afford proper attire, and/or are balancing a busy schedule that does not allow time to change.

Students will vary in their level of preparedness. Career Services has many guides and resources, but students may choose not to utilize them especially if they are using the career fair as an exploratory tool.

What they want:

All students regardless of academic year are invited and encouraged attend. Attendees may be looking to immediately apply for jobs and internships, seeking positions to apply for in the future, or exploring potential career pathways. Many students utilize recruitment events to learn more about career directions, industry trends, and company culture. They want to spend this time getting to know YOU and what you have to offer them now and/or in the future.

How to engage:

  1. Understand that students are likely nervous and intimidated. Close your devices and welcome each student with a smile and a hello!
  2. Start the conversation with an easy question, such as "What brings you to the career fair?" or "What is your major?". Ask students if they have a particular career in mind or if they are still exploring their career interests.
  3. Be prepared to:
    • describe a typical day in the roles you are hiring for
    • understand and articulate the company culture
    • provide information on company pay and benefits
    • discuss opportunities for training, development, mentorship, and progression within the company
  4. Some students have physical copies of their resumes ready for you, while others may have them uploaded to Handshake. Be sure to ask students how to best follow up with them.

Before the fair:

Students are already registering for spring career fair week and reviewing company profiles! Engage them early by updating your company profile, posting your job and internship opportunities, messaging students ahead of time, and more!

  1. Update your company profile
  2. Post any open positions to Handshake by February 6.
  3. Send students a personalized message through Handshake to invite them to speak with you at the fair.

During the fair:

We are excited to implement employer booth check-ins! Upon arrival, you will notice your booth has a QR code on it. You will want to encourage students to scan this QR code as they visit your booth for easy follow-up after the fair. Handshake will send you a personalized digest the next day with contact information for all the students you spoke with! Review Handshake's article on QR code check-in for more information, and please encourage students to scan the QR code at your booth!

After the fair:

  1. Follow up with those who scanned your QR code at the fair. You may wait for Handshake to send you a digest, or log into Handshake and select the associated career fair to find attendees sooner. Review Handshake's article on QR code check-in for more information.
  2. Send students a personalized message through Handshake to invite them to speak with you at the fair.

With so many employers present at our fast-paced fair, it can be hard to catch and hold students' attention. Here are some tips for reaching our students at UAF:

  • Students are more likely to visit your table if they have an idea of what you can offer them and want to learn more. We request that you post your jobs in Handshake by February 6th so that students can view them before the fair.
  • We will provide you with a QR code to your Handshake profile. Please encourage students to scan this so that you can maintain a digital connection and direct students to your open job postings on Handshake.
  • Some students appreciate having something they can take with them after the conversation. In addition to providing a business card, we recommend offering a flyer with information about your open positions.

Which Career Fair should I sign up for?

If you are recruiting for engineering and/or computer science positions, we encourage you to sign up for the Engineering Career Fair. If you are seeking candidates from non-engineering/computer science majors, we recommend that you register for the Job & Internship Fair. Please choose to sign up for the fair that best suits your hiring needs.

Can I sign up for both Career Fairs?

Yes! If you are hiring candidates with an engineering and/or computer science background, and candidates from other majors, you may register for both fairs. Each fair has a separate registration fee and process online.

What should I bring?

Please be sure to bring a table cloth for an 8-foot rectangular table. You may also want to bring business cards, swag to give away to students , or any informational items you may have!

We encourage you to bring:

  • Tablecloth
  • Signage with your name and logo
  • Flyers, brochures and other informational material
  • Swag or other promotional materials

Can I send my materials to UAF ahead of time through the mail?

We encourage you if at all possible to bring your items with you on the day of the fair to avoid any mail delays or mishaps. That being said, we know in certain circumstances it might make more sense to send your items ahead of time. Please contact Nicole Goff if you would like to talk about this option! She would be happy to help you.

There will be a drop off location on the day of the fair where you can bring your items prior to parking your vehicle to help make it easier. More information regarding this will be sent in your welcome letter.

Can UAF ship my materials back to us after the Career Fair has concluded?

UAF is not responsible for the return shipment of materials and will not route materials to a carrier. Any packages left at UAF after the Career Fair will be put into long-term storage until such time as you can return to campus and retrieve your materials.

Do you have any tips on parking or dropping off promotional items at the Wood Center?

If you are driving with more than one person, drop them off at the Wood Center with any of your items and then go park! This will save you from lugging items onto the shuttle. You may also drop things off at the Wood Center beginning at 9 a.m. and give them to a Career Services staff member while you go park. We will take them to your table for you.

There is metered parking that is closer than the Nanana lot. If you park at a meter please be sure to pay! If you park at the Nenana lot, your parking will be covered by Career Services and the shuttle is super easy to use and navigate! You can also bring your promotional items on the shuttle with you.

More information on this will be provided in your welcome letter which will be sent a few weeks prior to the fair!

When should I arrive?

Please arrive before 10 am to get your booth set up and ready for the fair which will begin at 10 am! You can arrive as early as 9 am, and we will have Career Services staff will be there to support you! We ask that you arrive no earlier than 9 am.

Do I need to stay for the entire Career Fair?

We ask that if possible you stay the entire length of the fair. Some students may not be able to come until towards the end of the fair and we want to make sure all students that attend have the opportunity to network with employers.

How do I follow up with the students/alumni who I met with?

You can always follow up with students using Handshake. Please see the helpful article below for more information on how to send students messages through Handshake.

How to send a message to students

I have some more questions about the Career Fair. Who should I contact?
