Science research institutes, including the Geophysical Institute and International Arctic Research Center, University of Alaska Statewide office and UA Museum of the North are in this area.
Elvey Building is home to the Geophysical Institute and named after Christian T. Elvey, director of the Geophysical Institute 1952-53. The Globe Room, the conference rooms on near the main entrance, has an enormous geological globe inside and beautiful stained glass window to the hallway.
