This year we are doing things a little differently at the Chancellor's Blue and Gold Celebration. We are celebrating our community and our successes. We celebrate our students with several featured speakers. And we celebrate our faculty, including the 2018 Emil Usibelli Distinguished Faculty Awardees.

  • Patty Martinez Meritt, Emil Usibelli Distinguished Teaching Award
  • Matthew Wooller, Emil Usibelli Research Award
  • Charles N. Dexter, Emil Usibelli Distinguished Service Award
We will also celebrate our alumni. This year we honor Neal Fried as our 2019 Distinguished Alumnus. Fried moved to Alaska to attend UAF where he earned degrees in both economics and history. Today, he supervises the Anchorage office of the Alaska Department of Labor. He has worked as an economist in Alaska for more than 40 years.

As UAF classmate Robert Coghill Junior wrote in his nomination letter, Fried’s “signature bow ties and ability to relate to Alaskans across the economic and cultural spectrums set him apart.”

The other annual award given by the UAF Alumni Association is the William R. Cashen Service Award, named for a member of the class of 1937, who set an example for service to the university. This year’s awardee, Denise Wartes, is the program manager for the Rural Alaska Honors Institute (RAHI). When she retires this summer, her passion for the program will be her legacy.

“It’s the things you don’t see that make Denise extraordinary,” said Debbie Mekiana, a RAHI alumna and one of the people who nominated Wartes for the award. “Her wealth of information and love for education overflows. And luckily it overflows on rural Alaska Native kids.”

Thanks to the generosity of our community, the event is already sold out, but you can contact UAF Development at 474-2619 for waitlist information. There is plenty of time to make a gift to the Blue and Gold Scholarship Endowment.

Also, consider attending the first ever Blue and Gold After-party at the Pub featuring Shagg.

Alumni Stories

Sweater leads to a journey through UAF hockey history

Old sweater leads to a journey through UAF hockey history
It all started with a memento, an old hockey sweater that Russell Knapp had kept for decades. Now, thanks to the passion of the dedicated UAF alumnus, a set of eight historic club hockey sweaters are displayed at the Carlson Center, the home arena of the Alaska Nanooks men’s ice hockey team.

When Knapp graduated in 1969 with a wildlife management degree, his best memories would be of playing hockey with the campus club team. “My first year at the university, they had tryouts at the outside rink over by the Patty,” he said. “There weren’t a lot of people trying out. Basketball was the big sport on campus at the time.”

After receiving an invitation to a hockey reunion in 2005, he returned to Fairbanks from his home in Nassau, New York. He has returned every year since and become active in a variety of groups supporting the UAF hockey program.

Ancient tooth reveals info on AK’s earliest inhabitants

NPS photo by Jeff RasicAn aerial view of the Trail Creek Caves site on Alaska's Seward Peninsula. Analysis of a 9,000-year-old tooth from the site has broadened understanding of Alaska's early people.
Research on a newly rediscovered 9,000-year-old child’s tooth has reshaped our understanding of Alaska’s ancient people, their genetic background and their diets.

The tooth represents only the second known discovery of a population of early migrants known as Ancient Beringians. Combined with previous University of Alaska Fairbanks research, the find indicates that Ancient Beringians remained in Alaska for thousands of years after first migrating across the Bering Land Bridge that connected eastern Asia and Alaska.

Analysis at UAF’s Alaska Stable Isotope Facility also revealed surprising details about the lives of the child and, by proxy, the mother who fed the child. By studying chemical signatures preserved in the tooth, ASIF Director Matthew Wooller was able to analyze their diet.

“The child’s food sources were entirely terrestrial, a sharp contrast with other sites that indicate inclusion of anadromous fish and marine resources,” said Wooller, who will receive the 2018 Emil Usibelli Research Award at the UAF Blue and Gold Celebration on Saturday, Feb. 16.

Hello from Constitution Hall

It has been about five months since I moved into my new office on the ground floor of Constitution Hall. I have previously worked in a variety of roles at the university, including as a reporter at public radio station KUAC-FM and as a communication manager at the UA Museum of the North.
What they all have in common is a front row seat to the fascinating discoveries, creative pursuits and innovative contributions made by our students, faculty and staff. My new view is a reminder that no matter where my window points, what I see is a vibrant campus with #NanookNation members who care about Alaska and the important issues facing our state.

So far during my tenure as UAF Alumni Relations Director/UAF Alumni Association Executive Director, I have worked with a dynamic board of directors and volunteers to honor two wonderful alumni, create the Blue and Gold After-party, a NEW event at the Pub, and make plans for a variety of programs to support our students. Most recently, the UAF Alumni Association organized the UA Impact Legislative Fly-in to Juneau along with representatives from both UAA and UAS. We met with more than two dozen legislators and staff to advocate for strong support of our university.

I am thankful for the hard work that preceded my tenure. Thanks to the many alumni who have served on the UAF Alumni Association board of directors or on one of the association's busy committees. Thanks to those who have volunteered at events or donated to our Benefactor Fund and other initiatives to support students at UAF. We have a proud legacy and I am excited to continue working towards our common goals.

Thank you for your warm welcome and your support of our university. I look forward to seeing you at a campus event soon.
