What Is Sport Management?
Sport management is one of the two concentrations within the Bachelor of Sport and Recreation Business degree. Sport management involves working on the business side of sports. The business side of sports includes everything from accounting, to fundraising, to marketing and event management. Sport management professionals work for professional teams, stadiums, colleges and universities, sports marketing firms, and many other organizations! Similar to sport management, recreation managers work on the business side of recreation. Managing a recreation facility, managing a hunting/fishing outfitter, being an entrepreneur, or working for a major recreation retailer are all examples of careers in recreation management! Sport and recreation management is a competitive field—a good first step to getting a job is earning a bachelor’s degree in sports and recreation business from UAF.

My internship with the production team for Rugby World Cup Sevens 2018 gave me a unique opportunity to see how media messages are planned for audiences at major sporting events. As a business student, I understand the impact advertising and sponsor funds have on game day production, and I thoroughly enjoyed being a part of media production for this event. This experience gave me the opportunity to grow myself professionally and apply the lessons I learned in my classes to the real world. By continuing to study marketing and game entertainment at the College of Business and Security Management and through my position as marketing programs coordinator for the UAF Athletics Department, I am increasing my knowledge about sport management and sport business. Combining all of these things is setting me up to be competitive in the workforce. Sierra Kinworthy, sport management major
