Placement testing

New and returning students interested in registering for courses may be required to complete a mandatory english or math placement test. Northwest Campus advisors are available to assist students throughout the region with the English EdReady and/or Math ALEKS placement programs.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks uses the program EdReady to provide English and WRTG course placement. This placement test is available online from any computer with an internet connection. You’ll need your UAF username and password. Contact the NWC Student Support Team for any assistance in taking the EdReady placement test.

The ALEKS program provides appropriate Math course placement and is taken online without a proctor, using a student UA ID. Advisors are available to assist students navigate the ALEKS placement test process. Learn more about ALEKs and take the placement test.

Proctoring

UAF Northwest Campus is a community resource for proctoring and administering various online examinations, certifications and tests. The Student Testing Room, located in the Education Center, is a secure space made available on campus for regional online testing and proctoring needs. The Testing Room can be reserved.

Tutoring services

Students who are having difficulties with their courses need to inform the instructor and their academic advisor. Upon the instructor's approval, we can arrange for and hire tutors to work with individual students. Other tutoring-related services available to student include:

Writing Center

The UAF Writing Center offers services to writers throughout rural Alaska and all locations beyond. Our tutors are available to assist students at any phase of the writing process.

Assistance we can provide includes:

  • Brainstorming
  • Tips for getting started--freewriting, outlining, developing tree diagrams, clusters, etc.
  • Drafting issues--following assignment guidelines, developing ideas, organizing ideas, shaping arguments/thesis, writing introductions & conclusions
  • Revision strategies--attending to such concerns as word choice, sentence structure, writing conventions, reworking or refining aspects of the draft
  • Citation format--MLA, APA, Chicago, Other (CSE, AAA, ASA)
  • Any other writing needs

We welcome writing on any topic and at all levels. Whether writers have a scratch outline or a completed draft or something in-between, we can provide a forty-five minute tutorial session no matter your location. We offer advice--always constructive, often great--and the collaboration of student and tutor can lead to strong papers and more confident writers.

Step 2 - Upload or email your paper

  1. Either upload your draft in the appointment form.

  2. Email it to us (uaf-writing-center@alaska.edu). Please send your draft at least 30 minutes prior to your appointment time.
Finally, please limit your document to a maximum of 10-12 pages.

 

Step 3 - Meet with your tutor

At the time of your appointment, a tutor will contact you via the conferencing method you selected in your appointment form or made during email or phone conversation.

Rasmuson Library Off-Campus Library Services

Rasmuson Library Off-Campus Library Services provides research assistance to UAF students, faculty and staff when they are not in Fairbanks. You can request books and research materials that are not online to be sent to your home address through the Interlibrary Loan (ILLiad) service. By going to the "Rasmuson Library web page" you can link to Rasmuson Library and Off-Campus Services resources.
