Dear UAF community,

More than 50 communities in Western Alaska have been significantly impacted by the remnants of Typhoon Merbok. Many UAF students, faculty, staff, alumni and donors live in or have loved ones affected by this historic storm.

To our students in and around the affected communities, we understand that you have shifted priorities right now. Some of you may not receive this email in a timely manner because you are without access to power or reliable internet in the aftermath of the storm.

I encourage faculty to monitor communications from our distance learning students and to be flexible with course assignments for those directly affected.

To our students at UAF who are concerned for families, friends and communities we are here to support you. If you need flexibility with your school work, please communicate with your faculty.

Our student services areas on each of our campuses have staff available to assist you. Some specific services include:

If you need financial assistance, we have emergency scholarships available.

To our employees, I encourage you to work with your supervisors if you need time away from work, and consider utilizing our employee assistance program.

For those interested in taking action, please consider making a donation to the following organizations:

Thank you for your support.

— Dan White, chancellor
