Arctic Region Supercomputing Center

The Arctic Region Supercomputing Center provides supercomputers, computational research, mass storage systems, visualization and high-speed networking to advance science, research and technology in several disciplines, ranging from geophysical phenomena of the Arctic to new breeds of high-performance software and microprocessors. ARSC is a member of the national Coalition for Academic Scientific Computation and the NSF-supported Center for High Performance Reconfigurable Computing.

ARSC was established in 1992 and supports a worldwide community of researchers with state-of-the art computational resources. The center offers services to faculty, researchers and students in many departments and research institutes throughout the university. As a shared resource center in the U.S. Department of Defense High Performance Computing Modernization Program, ARSC also provides computational resources for researchers in state and federal agencies, academic institutions nationwide and the Defense Department.

The center operates an MD Flying Flex™ immersive three-dimensional virtual reality studio, available to students and researchers in ARSC's Discovery Lab located in the UAF Rasmuson Library, and provides Apple Macintosh dual-processor G5 computers in the ARSC classroom, located in the West Ridge Research Building. These systems run a variety of high-end visualization software for training and educational purposes. ARSC maintains an access lab for use by faculty, affiliated researchers and students as well as a training lab, located in the Duckering Building and West Ridge Research Building, respectively. They are equipped with Sun Linux workstations. ARSC also maintains an Access Grid Node to facilitate real-time collaborations.

ARSC supports university courses in computer art, computational science and other disciplines with hardware, software and ARSC-affiliated faculty. The center also offers workshops and tutorials on specific skills needed to use ARSC resources effectively.
