Researchers with the Institute of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Extension work in diverse areas. Here are summaries of their current research in agriculture and horticulture, forestry, ecosystem management and climate change, energy, animal management and meat production, human impacts on the environment, and youth and families.

Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit

The North and West Alaska Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit (CESU) is part of a broader national framework of CESUs which are divided into 17 distinct biogeographic regions. The University of Alaska hosts the Alaska CESU, with 20 partners.  The Alaska CESU focuses on Arctic and Subarctic anthropology, landscapes, ecology, archeology, and physical and biological sciences.

OneTree

OneTree is a community outreach and research project that explores art and science through connections to a single tree. OneTree is based on an earlier project by the same name which got its start in 1998, when a single large oak was felled in the National Trust estate of Tatton Park in Cheshire, England. The OneTree project aims to show the unique value of woodlands and wood products associated with one tree.

Variety Trials

Plant cultivar trials for vegetables, flowers, and herbs are conducted every year at the Georgeson Botanical Garden which is at the Fairbanks Experiment Farm and at the Matanuska Experiment Farm.

Northwest Climate Hub

The Northwest Climate Hub encompasses Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. The purpose of the Hub is to deliver science-based knowledge and practical information to farmers, ranchers, forest landowners, and Native American tribes that will help them to adapt to climate change.
