September 26

Bat Detection

Rachel Shively, president of the student chapter of The Wildlife Society will teach us how to use a bat detector.  We’ll see if we can find any bat activity before they migrate or hibernate.

October 10 & October 17

Duck Banding

We’ll examine body condition and age structure of a population of mallards that over-winter on the Chena River.  Learn how to handle, age, sex, measure, and band wild ducks.

October 24

Telemetry

We will break into teams and play “treasure hunt” using VHF radio telemetry….a valuable skill for anyone looking for a summer job as a wildlife tech.

October 31 & November 7

Study Skin Preparation

Learn how to prepare a museum-quality (well, almost) study skin.  We will skin bird carcasses, clean skins and learn how to properly mount specimens. Yours to keep if you’d like!

November 14 & November 21

Scavenger Phototrapping

We’ll set up digital motion-sensitive cameras on bait stations.  We may catch ravens, foxes…or wolves.

November 21 & December 5

Vole Trapping/Owl Playback Surveys

Survey owls and their prey.  Learn how to use playback calls to detect owls.  We’ll also capture voles and learn how to handle and sex them.
