About this location

The Robert G. White Large Animal Research Station (LARS) on Yankovich Road was created in 1979 with a major grant from the National Science Foundation, Office of Polar Programs to establish a location close to the university where research could take place on large ungulates in captivity. Current animal populations at LARS include muskoxen, caribou and reindeer. Living accommodations at the site are available for visiting scientists, graduate students, visiting scholars and interns.

The station serves as a research, educational and outreach station, providing the opportunity to introduce students to wildlife and wildlife research. High school and undergraduate students have the opportunity to conduct research projects under the guidance of university faculty and graduate students. Many UAF biology and wildlife instructors incorporate a visit to LARS as part of their courses.
Public tours are offered during the summer and viewing is available year-round from the parking area.
