Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station and Georgeson Botanical Garden
About this location
The Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station was founded in 1906. AFES conducts studies on plants and animals to benefit local, state and national interests. The main aspects of current research are the nutritional characteristics of cereal grains developed in Alaska for livestock diets, and reindeer nutrition and production. The station develops strains of short grains, perennial plants, trees and shrubs that thrive in subarctic and arctic climates. It houses the Reindeer Research Program and it maintains the botanical garden. The experiment station also operates a farm in Palmer and several off-campus research sites.
The Georgeson Botanical Garden grew out of the demonstration flower garden at AFES. The garden is a valuable source of information on suitable varieties of annual flowers and vegetables for commercial growers and home gardeners. Today, AFES is expanding the garden to address its new mission as a center for education and research in subarctic horticulture. The garden offers tours during the summer months.
