Veterinary Services is the unit on the campus
through which the Attending
Veterinarian ensures the provision of adequate veterinary
care to all live vertebrates used in research and teaching
at UAF. These services are a regulatory requirement and are
offered exclusively for UAF animals and programs.
In addition to providing basic clinical and diagnostic support
for our animals, Veterinary Services offers a variety of research
support services. Click on Research Support and Pharmacy for
more information.
University of Alaska Fairbanks Veterinary Services is a "recharge
center" administered by the Institute of Arctic Biology
business office. The attending
veterinarian (also the director of the Office
of Research Integrity) oversees the budget, space, staffing
and activities of Veterinary Services.
Provision of adequate veterinary care to UAF animals (captive
or free-ranging animals involved in UAF activities) is a regulatory
requirement with oversight from the UAF Institutional Animal
Care and Use Committee. The American College of Laboratory Animal
Medicine (ACLAM) has an excellent description of what constitutes adequate
veterinary care.
Veterinary Services can also provide support services for research
projects; however, these services must be covered in the project
budget. Click on the Research Support button for more information.
Veterinary services are provided exclusively for animals involved
in research, teaching or diagnostics at the University of Alaska
Fairbanks. Services may be provided by special request to other
agencies, organizations, or private veterinary practitioners;
however, university projects and animals always take priority.
