SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE
The UWA scholarship committee is currently reviewing student applications and the awardees will be selected next week. Alexis Runstadler has already let the applicants know that the scholarship winners are invited to the UWA Annual Meeting. Review is being done by e-mail this year and more reviewers are still welcome to join in. If you have a couple of free hours this weekend, e-mail Alexis (acrunstadler@yahoo.com) and she will send you a few applications to review.
Alexis and Sine send a big thank you to all UWA members who are helping to review the scholarship applications.
SALAD LUNCHEON
A Salad Lunch is a wonderful way of enjoying a healthy and excellent meal with the minimum of trouble. The hostess provides something to drink, some bread and a dessert, if she so wishes, while each guest brings a salad. The more the merrier, and the more dishes the greater the variety.
Carol DeVoe hosted her first Salad Luncheon on April 16th. It was a delightful lunch made even more special because Ruth Levy and Judy Williams attended, as did Cynthia Dorman who is recently returned from her travels. Rita McGrath and myself, Helen Howard, completed the gathering. We fitted nicely around CarolÕs table.
If anyone would like to host a May luncheon, please let me know. We all agreed there was no reason not to have lunches together in the summer, including picnics or lunch outdoors were possible. For those who are planning to be in town most of the summer, that would be an enjoyable break. - Helen Howard, Salad Luncheon Co-Coordinator, hmh@acsalaska.net
UWA ANNUAL MEETING
Each May the University WomenÕs Association members get together to celebrate the past year, honor scholarship winners, report on activities and finances, elect new officers, and to decide on UWA contributions to make to groups and organizations. This year UWA will hold its annual meeting on May 16, 2009 at 2pm at the Chancellor's Residence, 610 Kobuk Avenue, UAF Campus with Sherry Modrow hosting.
Our theme for the meeting is ÒGrowing and Sustaining Our Gardens and our UWAÓ. Michele Hebert, Land Resources Agent, Cooperative Extension Service, University of Alaska will present a short, informative program on vegetable gardening.
Growing and sustaining UWA will be the focus for the business portion of the meeting as we need new officers for the positions of President, Membership Vice-President, Secretary and for Member-at-Large to keep UWA blooming and growing in the future. Watch the mail for your invitation.
INTERNATIONAL DINERS
International Diners is a fun way to collect some great recipes and the dinners are a feast. The participants are asked to choose a month they will host a meal and decide upon a cuisine theme. Those whose homes are unable accommodate a dinner party may partner with someone who can. When the theme and date are announced, diners interested in attending contact the host and indicate if they are bringing a guest. The host plans a menu and each diner receives one dish to prepare. The cost of the meal is divided evenly among the participants. Every dinner offers a unique culinary experience with an extensive variety of dishes to savor.
No dinner is scheduled during the month of May. If you are interested in hosting International Diners in May, please contact Barbara Braley by sending an email to bbraley@acsalaska.net or call 457-8957. - Barbara
WALK/SKI GROUP
The University WomenÕs Association thanks Elizabeth Shapland for all her work coordinating the Ski/Walk Group. The snow is disappearing fast but, due to family obligations, Elizabeth won't be able to organize a walking group this summer. As an incentive to get out walking herself, Rita Osborne is looking for other walkers to join the group.
The walking group will meet Monday and Friday 11 am at the Moore Street entrance of Pioneer Park. Just show up or contact Rita at ritaosborne@gmail.com or 479-4535 to let her know you will be joining her.
The scenery changes often so we'll be on the lookout for the beavers and many bird species. Dress warmly in layers please. - Rita Osborne
BOOK GROUP
The Book Club is planning to meet (or will have met) Friday, May 1st upstairs at Gulliver's bookstore, to discuss Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. Let Laura Walsh know if you are planning to come, because sometimes the meetings have to be rescheduled.
For the summer, we are reading What to Eat by Marion Nestle. The author will be in Fairbanks on Saturday, July 18th to give a lecture. The blurb on the back of the book reads: "Marion Nestle's What to Eat is a new guide for a new era in American food and nutrition--the one book that tells you everything you need to know about food, with clarity, insight, wit, and wisdom.- Laura Walsh, lwalsh@acsalaska.net (preferred) or 374-8084.
AN EVENING WITH BRAHMS
The University Chorus is giving their "Evening with Brahms" concert on Saturday, May 2nd, at 8:00 pm in the Davis Concert Hall on the UAF Campus. Our German may not be perfect, but we have been working hard, so the concert will be well practiced. There will be a dessert auction in connection with the concert. Tickets are available from Laura Walsh or at the door. Prices are: general admission - $10.00, student/military/senior - $5.00, and children - free.
Laura has two complimentary tickets for the first person who requests them. Laura Walsh, lwalsh@acsalaska.net, 374-8084.
HOSPICE PLANT SALE
The Hospice of the Tanana Valley will hold its annual spring Plant Sale on Saturday, May 23rd from 9 am to 1 pm in the green house at 20th Avenue and Turner Street.
Hospice of the Tanana Valley provides support for people who are dying, their families and loved ones. Hospice also provides individual, group, and community support for those who have experienced a loss through death. Thanks to contributions, state grants, United Way funds and volunteers, Hospice offers all services free of charge. When you come to the Plant Sale your purchase of splendid vegetable starts, flower seedlings, proven Fairbanks perennials or house plants supports this worthy cause.
