CABIN FEVER CELEBRATION
We had a good turn out Sunday, February 1 for the Cabin Fever celebration at Nancy Hausel Johnson's home. We braved chilly weather to drive up Moose Mountain to see Nancy's scenic Alaska tiles and tour her studio. We also heard from Georgene Nielsen, Master Gardener about ÒFeeding your Garden with LoveÓ and from Mike Musick, Green Builder on the subject ÒTips to $ave Energy in your HomeÓ It was a great afternoon filled with glimpses of the Alaskan range, friendly conversation and refreshments.

Thank you Rita Osborne for coordinating Cabin Fever and thank you Nancy Hausel Johnson for opening your home to us.Ê

INTERNATIONAL DINERS
International Diners is a fun way to collect some great recipes and the dinners are a feast. The participants are asked to choose a month they will host a meal and decide upon a cuisine theme. Those whose homes are unable accommodate a dinner party may partner with someone who can. When the theme and date are announced, diners interested in attending contact the host and indicate if they are bringing a guest. The host plans a menu and each diner receives one dish to prepare. The cost of the meal is divided evenly among the participants. Every dinner offers a unique culinary experience with an extensive variety of dishes to savor.

Laura Walsh of the International Diners group hosted a German dinner last Sunday, March 1st. Twelve diners enjoyed a very gemŸtliche Abend at the home of Laura and John Walsh, with Rita and Dan Osborne as co-hosts. ÊThe cuisine was German and featured Sauerbraten, Fischkurrie, dumplings, Tomatensalat, Fruchttorte (fruit tort), SchwarzwŠlder Kirschtorte (Black Forest cake), and German style home-made bread.Ê Rita Osborne enjoyed Òthe table decorated with Laura's Hummel and Steiff collections along with party favors of cardamon, anis, kummel and ingwer (cardamon, anise seeds, caraway seeds and ginger).Ó

SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE
The UWA Scholarship application period for the 2009 - 2010 academic Êyear scholarship awards is currently open and will run until March 31, 2009 (with the possible extension until April 15th if we don't get very many applications by the March 31st deadline). The scholarship committee will review the applications during the month of April and winners will be announced by the first of May. If you have never reviewed scholarship applications and would like to help, please contact co-chairs Alexis Runstadler (acrunstadler@yahoo.com) or Sine Anahita (sine.anahita@uaf.edu).

RECYCLE SALE MARCH 28th!
Our UWA Spring Recycle Sale is the culminating event this year for WomenÕs History Month at UAF!

Thanks to all who have already signed up for shifts at the sale. If you havenÕt signed up yet, please do! We need YOU! You can fill out times you can volunteer by going to this scheduling ÒDoodleÓ at http://www.doodle.com/mzcywhh86m9kdeqv or you can email Sale Coordinator, Monica Owens at fywoc@uaf.edu or you can call the WomenÕs Center 474-6360 to confirm time slots and positions you would like to fill.

DonÕt worry if there is already someone signed up in a job and time you would like, in most cases, we need 6 or more people for the duties in each timeslot. We could use a totally GREEN Doodle (go to the Doodle site to see what this means), so sign up early and often. Ê

Especially needed are cashiers (those who are good with numbers and handling cash), cutters and adders, as well as organizers, floorwalkers, and, those who, like me, are good at buying. Shifts last about 3 hours and we end with the 5:00 p.m. clean-up.

Rita Osborne asks that UWA members bring shopping bags both large and small to the event .This will get the plastic bags back into use as our shoppers need them to carry their purchases.

In the next week look for flyers about the event and for tags and info packets to get those gently used items off garage shelves, out of the backs of closets and back into use. This event is a service to the Fairbanks community as well as a scholarship fundraiser. See the UWA website http://www.uaf.edu/uwa/recycle.html for more info on the Recycle Sale, and for exciting pictures to inspire you to get in on the pre-sale bargain hunting rush! And tell your friends. We are hoping for a record Recycle Sale this spring!

WOMENÕS HISTORY MONTH
Check out the UAF WomenÕs Center blog http://uafwomen.blogspot.com for exciting and informative events coming up during WomenÕs History Month (for which our Recycle Sale is the culminating event!).

We start Monday, March 2nd with a 7:30 pm screening of the documentary ÒBlessed is the Match: The Life and Death of Hannah SeneshÓ (a Farthest North Jewish Film Festival event) in Schaible Auditorium at the Bunnell Building, UAF.

On Friday March 6th, join online for a presentation by Dame Julia Morton-Marr, Nobel Peace Prize nominee, onÓ Peace & Sustainability: 20th & 21st Century WomenÕs WorkÓ. See more info on how to connect at http://uafwomen.blogspot.com/2009/02/dame-julia-morton-marr.html .

See the UAF WomenÕs Center blog for details on how to join us online, and/or the UAF WomenÕs Center calendar http://www.uaf.edu/uafwomen for other exciting events.

WALK/SKI GROUP - ALL WELCOME!
The walk/ski group meets in the Ballaine Lake parking lot at 11 AM Monday and Friday for skiingÊand on Thursday for walking at Big Dipper ice arena.Ê We have a minus 5 degree cut-off temperature for skiing, determined by a phone call to 844 around 10 am.Ê If it is below minus 5 on Monday or Friday, we will meet to walk at the Big Dipper for walking instead of skiing.
Ê
No need to RSVP--just show up if you can--but if you have questions, please call Elizabeth Shapland at 474-4725.Ê Our group includes beginners as well as more advanced skiers, so don't hesitate to give skiing a try.

Rita Osborne has been skiing with the group on Mondays and Fridays. She hopes a few more beginning skiers will join her. DonÕt have skis? Rita suggests you shop the UWA Recycle Sale on Saturday, March 28th in the Wood Center ballroom.

BOOK GROUP
In February, the book group had divided meetings due to illness and travel, but we all enjoyed The Gate to Women's Country. Ê

This month we will get together on Sunday, March 22 at 3pm in GulliverÕs upstairs meeting room. The book we are going to discuss is Infidel by Ayann Hirsi Ali - a book about a Somali woman who escaped a forced marriage to become a legislator in Holland.

For April the book group is going to tackle one of the BBC's top 100 books, but we haven't quite decided which one. We may just have a book share day in March and then do a group read for April.
Ê
Suggestions for upcoming months are welcome. ÊTell me what you are reading! - Laura Walsh at lwalsh@acsalaska.net (preferred) or 374-8084.

SALAD LUNCHEON
Helen Howard hosted the February salad luncheon at her homestead house. Helen writes: ÒWe had a very relaxed three-hour lunch at my house on February 17th with Barbara Braley, Elizabeth Shapland and her friend Bonnie Bond. The weather cooperated nicely and the salads were all great. We finished off with English trifle.Ó

The March salad luncheon will be held at the home of Barbara Braley at noon on Tuesday, March 17th. Her address is 1301 Maya Lane. If you plan to come, please send an email to bbraley@acsalaska.net and she will provide a map to her home. Or you may call 457- 8957 for directions.

If anyone would like to host an April luncheon, please let Helen Howard know by contacting hmh@acsalaska.net or by telephoning 488-2314 (messages on answering machine only, please).
