BIRTHDAYS

This month we celebrate the birthdayÕs of Ginny Kawasaki, October 9 and Shari George, October 18.

AT THE WELCOME TEA

The UWA Welcome Tea took place at the U of A presidentÕs residence on Gold Dust Drive, Sunday, September 27.  We missed Patty Hamilton who is travelling, but she graciously allowed UWA to hold the Fall Tea in her home.

Our theme ÒHidden TalentsÓ brought out an amazing number of responses from the membership. After Laura Walsh serenaded us with ÒCome to UWAÓ, Ginny Kawasaki and Kayt Sunwood joined her to sing ÒI Am Alaskan.Ó accompanied by Kat Ferrell on guitar.

Gael Murakami displayed two of her beautiful watercolors and Barbara Gabel showed cover art for a book she authored. There will be a book signing event in November at Gullivers.  Inna Rivkin played the keyboard and sang a song she had composed. Marj Illingworth told us about her peonies and fabric artist, Elizabeth Shapland modeled a suit she made featuring her own fabric decoration.

Mariclare Langan recited a poem she had learned as a student and Cynthia Dorman showed pictures of her smocking. Agrita Draba told us of her childhood and her talent for growing tomatoes. Dancer Kara Golux told about her art and read an inspiring passage from a Sufi sage.  Bethany Marx played guitar and sang a song of her own composition. Susan Hurley-Glowa showed us part of the documentary she made about a Cape Verde musician.

Our get well wishes go to Helen Howard who chaired the Fall Tea but could not take part due to ÒfluÓ.

41st ANNUAL HOLIDAY BAZAAR – THE WORK GOES ON

The work party to conduct the first lottery for vendor tables and mail out the results was held Saturday, September 26th. As in past years, we worked at UAFÕs Schaible cabin, thanks to the generosity of Patty Hamilton. Thank you, Elizabeth Shapland, Cynthia Dorman, Laura Walsh, Kat Ferrell, Kayt Sunwood, Susan Hurley-Glowa, Ginny Kawasaki, Shari George, Janet Taylor, Rita McGrath, August-Michelle Abukasis, Nilima Hullavarad, and Janet Satchwell for all your work.

The second lottery, to assign Sunday tables to vendors who requested a table for both days of the Bazaar, will be held in the home of Elizabeth Shapland, 725 Cardinal Court, on Monday, October 5 at 10 am.

If you are available to work on the second lottery, please contact Elizabeth at 474-4725 or boxshapland@alaska.net.

SALAD LUNCHEON

A Salad Luncheon is a wonderful way of enjoying a healthy and excellent meal with the minimum of trouble. The hostess provides something to drink, some bread and a dessert, if she so wishes, while each guest brings a salad. The more the merrier, and the more dishes the greater the variety.

The first salad luncheon of the season was held at Helen Howard's new house on Thursday, September 17th. Helen writes: ÒI was thrilled to be able to use our new house in town for the September Salad Lunch. As it is on Riverview Drive, Carol De Voe arrived on her bicycle from the other side of Airport Road. Elizabeth Shapland brought Ruth Levey, who had some luscious strips of silk embroidered fabric from China to show and pass on to Elizabeth. Mariclare Langan told us that the people in Florida are not as interesting as her friends in Alaska, so she is back for a while - until she can't stand the Fairbanks winter any longer. It was lovely to have Vera Alexander, who is a great conversationalist. Rita McGrath came by bus and Janet Satchwell managed to spring loose from her job long enough to enjoy the excellent salads. Cynthia Dorman and I brought the total to nine.Ó

Cynthia Dorman will host a salad luncheon her home, 1020 Baneberry Lane, on October 20th at noon. Please call her at 457-4428 or email c.dorman@alaska.net to RSVP.

Interested in hosting a November salad luncheon? Phone Helen Howard at 488-2314 or email her at hmh@acsalaska.net to decide on a date.

RECYCLE SALE

The Fall Recycle Sale scheduled for Saturday, October 10th has been cancelled. The UWA board was not able to find chairperson(s) for this traditional autumn event. There may be a Spring Recycle Sale, providing there is an organizer to set it up.

Thank you to those of you who were signed up to work on the day of the Sale.

WAYS YOU CAN HELP WITH THE HOLIDAY BAZAAR

This year, the University WomenÕs Association Holiday Bazaar will take place on Saturday and Sunday, November 7th and 8th.  This is UWAÕs scholarship fund raiser and there is still a lot to do before the Bazaar opens.

CanÕt make it to a scheduled work party? There are lots of other ways to be a part of UWAÕs scholarship fund raiser.

We are looking for members willing to place UWA Bazaar banners and flyers in the Fairbanks area or to assist Kat Ferrell with media publicity.

If you can participate in any way, please contact either Georgene Nielsen at 479-0988 or email nielsen@mosquitonet.com  or call Shari George at 455-9000 or email fnswg@uaf.edu.

Ginny Kawasaki will be telephoning all UWA members to sign them up for a shift during the days of the Holiday Bazaar.  If you plan to be out of town during the bazaar, November 7 / November 8 or prior to the bazaar, Ginny would appreciate knowing so she fill up your message machine with multiple calls.

You can telephone Ginny Kawasaki at 456-5192 or you can email ritaosborne@gmail.com and Rita Osborne will pass the message on to Ginny.

WALK / SKI GROUP

Elizabeth Shapland writes, ÒWe are beginning with walks at 10 AM Mondays and Fridays, meeting at the back gate of Pioneer Park on Moore Street along the river, but we will be making

changes as the season progresses.Ó Elizabeth Shapland (474-4725) and Cynthia Dorman (457-4428) ask that people interested in walking telephone one of them for location.

BOOK GROUP

For October, we need a relatively short book that many people have already gotten or read, so I am arbitrarily choosing A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini.

The most convenient weekend for me to meet is the weekend of the 16th through the 18th of October or two weeks later, the 30th of October through the 1st of November.

Please let me know which date you prefer among these four choices: Sunday afternoon at 3:00 on either October 18th or November 1st OR Friday, October 16 or Friday, October 30 at 4:00. We will also decide November's and December's books (and possibly more) at the meeting.

Contact Laura Walsh - email much preferred:  lwalsh@acsalaska.net; telephone permitted if you must :-) 374-8084.

NOVEMBER GAMES NIGHT

Since my birthday falls the day after the Holiday Bazaar, that isn't a convenient time for a Games Night.  But I would like to invite anyone who is interested to my house for a Games Night on Friday, November 13th, at 7:00.  Eat dinner first, but I will have snacks and drinks available.  For my amusement, bring 60 of something (pieces of macaroni, used stamps, paper clips, etc.).  - Laura Walsh - lwalsh@acsalaska.net or 374-8084 (email preferred).
