BIRTHDAYS
This month we celebrate the
birthdays of Laura Walsh and Ute Kaden on November 9 and Shirley Jewett on
November 10. We wish a Happy Birthday to others who have November birthdays.
ITÕS TIME TO RENEW YOUR UWA MEMBERSHIP
If you didnÕt get a chance to do it yet, now is the time to renew your UWA membership. You may print out the
form found at the end of this monthÕs newsletter. Please send the completed
form with your check for $15 to UWA; P.
O. Box 81776; Fairbanks, AK 99708.
UWA Treasurer, Laura Walsh will
have to impose a deadline of Tuesday, December 1st for getting your
information into the new directory, so she can get the booklets printed and
mailed in a timely fashion.
COME TO THE HOLIDAY BAZAAR
This year, the
University WomenÕs Association Holiday Bazaar will take place on Saturday
and Sunday, November 7th and 8th. This is our 41st
holiday bazaar and it's still the best in Fairbanks! Many of our readers
have volunteered to work a shift or two during the two days of the Bazaar.
The
University WomenÕs Association recently gave scholarships to 11 women for the
2009-10 academic year at UAF. The money
for those scholarships comes from the proceeds of the Holiday Bazaar, our chief
fund raising event.
If you canÕt volunteer at the
Bazaar, there are other ways to support UWAÕs fund raising efforts. Please shop
on both days--there are many new items and your beloved favorites. Bring
a friend and enjoy the day with a latte or lunch. Say hello to other
members at the UWA table. 2008 photograph by Craig Dorman
SKI/WALK GROUP
The ski season is here! If you would like to join us for a
noncompetitive ski, come to the Ballaine Lake parking lot on Farmer's Loop at
10 AM Mondays and Fridays. We are
usually out for about an hour. No
need to RSVP. We usually stay home
if it is colder than 10 below.
If there is interest, we
could also meet at 11 AM on Thursdays at the Big Dipper for a walk. Let us know if you are interested
and/or would prefer another time.
Call Elizabeth Shapland (474-4725) or Cynthia Dorman (457-4428).
BOOK GROUP
The book club met Sunday,
October 18th at 3:00 in Gulliver's upstairs meeting room. We discussed
Khaled HosseiniÕs A Thousand Splendid Suns. We pretty much agreed
that it is a good book, even if the subject matter is depressing.
This month's meeting is set
for Sunday, November 22nd, at 3:00 pm
at Gulliver's, unless someone
suggests someplace else. NovemberÕs book is Outliers by Malcolm
Gladwell. This is a non-fiction book about what it is that makes for
success in life. Gladwell's thesis is that there are certain constructs
in society that contribute inadvertently to the success of some, at the expense
of others. There are some intriguing examples; for instance, the fact
that a huge percentage of outstanding junior hockey players in Canada were born
in the first 3 months of the year.
Future book selections: For
December, the month when children's books are typically discussed, we chose The
Giver by Lois Lowry. ItÕs a dystopian fantasy that has been a classroom
favorite for decades, but we will also discuss several other nominees. They
include Good Night, Mr. Tom, a touching story about child evacuees
during World War II, and Climbing the Stairs by Padma Venkatraman. During
India's struggle for independence, a young girl tries to get an education, in
spite of family setbacks.
Les Miserables by Victor Hugo is set for next April, due to the fact
that it is very long and Laura hopes to have more time to read it by then.
Questions, comments, and additional book suggestions: Laura Walsh, lwalsh@acsalaska.net (preferred) or 374-8084 (only if you must :-).
PREPARING FOR THE 41ST ANNUAL
HOLIDAY BAZAAR
The lottery, to
assign Sunday tables to vendors who requested a table for both days of the
Bazaar, was held in the home of Elizabeth Shapland on October 5.
Thank you, Elizabeth for the delicious lunch you made for our work
group: Rita Osborne, Laura Walsh,
Cynthia Dorman and Georgene Nielsen.
Sine Anahita
designed an arresting Holiday Bazaar poster for UWA and itÕs getting noticed
all about town. We want to thank
all UWA Bazaar volunteers who picked up posters at the WomenÕs Center and put
them up.
Ginny Kawasaki and
Rita Osborne have been contacting all UWA members and many non-member, Ōfriends
of UWAĶ to sign them up for a Bazaar shift. Ginny and Rita write,ĶThanks to all the volunteers who help make our bazaar the holiday bazaar in Fairbanks.
We appreciate you very much! We couldnÕt do it without you!Ķ
GAMES NIGHT
I would like to host a Games
Night (board
games, card games, party games) on Friday, November 13th, from 7:00 pm. If
you would like to come, please let me know, so I can tell how many are coming.
- Laura Walsh, lwalsh@acsalaska.net or 374-8084.
CHRISTMAS CONCERT
On December 6th at 4 pm come hear the Fairbanks Symphony
Orchestra's Christmas Concert in the
Davis Concert Hall on the UAF
campus. The Choir of the North, the Children's Choir, and the University
Chorus will join the orchestra for this concert. Get tickets early, as
they usually sell out.
UNIVERSITY CHORUS PERFORMANCE
December 12th at 8 pm the University Chorus will present A Caribbean Christmas Mass by Glenn
McClure at the Davis Concert Hall.
Come see several UWA members perform this Christmas Mass with rhythm. Tickets
are available from Laura Walsh (and others).
SALAD LUNCHEON
A Salad Luncheon
is a wonderful way of enjoying a healthy and excellent meal with the minimum of
trouble. The hostess provides something to drink, some bread and a dessert, if
she so wishes, while each guest brings a salad. The more the merrier, and the
more dishes the greater the variety.
The October lunch at my home included a touch of Halloween with a
few decorations. The hostess refrained from wearing a costume although it
was a passing thought. From the level of chatter, the group of nine seemed to
be having a good time. The salads were great. I donÕt know how it
happens, but we seldom have duplicates. – Cynthia Dorman
Our
bicoastal UWA member, Mariclare Langan
writes: ŌI sold my Fairbanks house, rented out my Florida condo, and am now
renting at 902 Kellum Street - Fairbanks Bed and Breakfast. Come to my new place for the November salad
luncheon. Lunch will be at noon,
Thursday, November 12th Ō
ŌPlease
call me at 479-2332 (my old number)
so I will know how many are coming. (When I go back to Fla. in Jan., I
will keep the same number and have calls forwarded to my Florida number in case
anyone is going to be down that way this spring)Ķ.
DIRECTIONS:
Take University Ave. to Airport Way then left to Cowles St (across from the old
Gottshalks) then about 3 blocks to 9th Ave. Turn left and go one block.
House is on the corner; 2 stories, bottom is green and top is brown. Please
park by the house on 9th, or on the street.
