This year UWA and the Women’s Center
will once again present the lighter side of living in Interior Alaska. The comic
fashion show featuring “Fairbanks wear” for the entertainment and enlightenment
of new University faculty is set for Monday,
August 24 at noon in the Wood Center
ballroom.
Mark
your calendar, and contact Kayt Sunwood
(phone: 474-6311 or email: kayt.sunwood@uaf.edu ) to assure
your spot in the fashion stage line-up. Again this year, UWA president, Kayt
Sunwood will model her clothing and equipment for research trips/travel to
remote villages by small aircraft. Does anyone have a dog equipped with coat
and booties? In 2007 canine model Tipper
stole the show.
Come
and help us introduce newcomers to dressing for success during a Fairbanks
winter. Contact Kayt with a description of what you will be modeling so we can
fit you into the line-up. This is a not-to-be-missed event, so call Kayt right
away so she can develop the list of models, descriptions of what they will be
wearing, the line up for “walking the stage” and the text for the Fabulous
Fairbanks Fashion Show extravaganza!
The
Community Writer’s Group has published an anthology that includes the work of UWA
member, Kristina Ahlnas. The title is Out of Darkness into the Light with
a foreword by Dermot Cole and illustrations by Susan
Englebrecht.
This
book should be available at the Community Writer’s Group
reading on August 22 at 7 p.m. in the
Bear Gallery at Pioneer Park. You are all welcome to attend this free
event. Some the writers scheduled to read from their works are:
Kristina Ahlnas, Larry Paquin, Ulyana Korotkova, Jinlan Tomasic, Betty
Robinson and Wilma Yarnal.
FALL WELCOME TEA
The
UWA Welcome Tea is set for Sunday,
September 27 at 2 PM at the U of A president’s residence, 431 Gold Dust
Drive, Fairbanks.
We hope our
members will collect names and contact numbers for those who are new in the
area as they meet them throughout August and September and invite them to the
Tea. This is an opportunity to
introduce UWA to friends and newcomers.
The theme this
year will is ”Hidden Talents”, so prepare a song, bring a painting, show a book
you are writing, demonstrate Tai 'Chi, etc. RSVP by e-mail to Helen Howard hmh@acsalaska.net
or leave a phone message at 374-2914.
I
would like to get Denali Road Lottery tickets for Sept 18, 19, 20 and 21 to
give to new faculty, so if anyone was lucky enough to win one that they won’t
be using, please contact me at 474-5055.
Alternately,
if anyone would like to include one of the new faculty (or a couple) when they
drive the park road, please let me know as well. This would be a nice intro to
UWA. Many thanks. – Joy Morrison
The
Fall Recycle Sale is scheduled for noon on Saturday,
October 10th in the Wood Center at UAF. There is a lot to do
before we open our doors to the public.
Any
one in the community is encouraged to move gently used items off their garage
shelves and out of the backs of their closets and get them back into use by
bringing them to the Recycle Sale. It’s a good way to sell things you no longer
have use for without the hassle of managing a sale at your home.
UWA provides a place where sellers can
drop off their items in the morning; we sell them beginning at noon.
Helpers are needed
throughout that day anywhere from set up time at 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Please contact Georgene Nielsen 479-0988 or nielsen@mosquitonet.com if you are willing to help with this
event.
A bazaar work
party is scheduled for Thursday, August 27 at 1:30 PM at the offices of Vonna Husby
to send out UWA’s initial mailing of applications to
all Bazaar vendors in our data base. We will meet at the Raymond James
Financial Services offices of Vonna Husby located in the Saddler’s Building
at 610 Cushman Street beginning at 1:30
pm. I am guessing that the job will take 3 hours, so if you can’t
get there at 1:30 show up when you are free.
Can’t make it to the work party? We’d like you to think about
using your organizational talents to help this fund raising effort in other
areas, like the vendor table lottery, or scheduling of UWA volunteers for the
two days of the Bazaar. Maybe you could use your people skills by contacting the Lathrop Ski
Team coordinator about providing porter services for UWA vendors or by
arranging Security with the UAF police, or by checking the UWA message phone
for vendor inquiries.
We also seek members willing to assist Kat Ferrell with media
(publicity) or with the placing of UWA Bazaar banners and flyers in the
Fairbanks area.
If
you can participate in any way, please contact either Georgene Nielsen at
479-0988 or email nielsen@mosquitonet.com
or call Shari George at 455-9000 or email fnswg@uaf.edu.
The
walking/skiing group will not be meeting on a regular basis for the remainder
of summer, however, if you would like to join us in walking/hiking activities,
please give Rita Osborne a call at 479-4535 or email ritaosborne@gmail.com to see what is
planned for that week.
BOOK GROUP
The Book Club met and discussed Marion Nestle's What to
Eat and Food Politics, which were both excellent
introductions to her lecture here in Fairbanks. She was an absorbing
and deft speaker and it was great to be so well prepared.
The book club is reading Victor Hugo's Les Miserables (a
classic) and Ellen Goodman and Patricia O-Brien's I Know Just What You Mean (about
women's friendships) but we don’t have a date set for the August meeting yet.
I would love to hear reading suggestions from others, whether or not you are in the book club. What have
you really enjoyed this summer?
We seem to enjoy an eclectic mix of books, so really, just about anything goes. - Laura
Walsh, lwalsh@acsalaska.net or 374-8084.
IT WAS A GREAT FAIRBANKS
SUMMER ARTS FESTIVAL
The 2009 Fairbanks
Summer Arts Festival was lots of fun this year, with many of the UWA members
participating and/or attending concerts. I hope many of you had a chance
to experience some of the fabulous output of the festival. – Laura Walsh
A Salad Lunch is a wonderful
way of enjoying a healthy and excellent meal with the minimum of trouble. The hostess
provides something to drink, some bread and a dessert, if she so wishes, while
each guest brings a salad. The more the merrier, and the more dishes the
greater the variety.
The
Salad Lunch meetings have been discontinued until the fall unless someone
wishes to host a Lunch, in which case, please call Helen Howard with a date.
Leave messages only on the answering machine at 488-2314. - Helen Howard,
Coordinator
