UWA HOLIDAY BAZAAR                                 all photographs courtesy of Craig Dorman

UWAÕs main scholarship fund raiser for 2008, the Holiday Bazaar went off beautifully.  I want to express my thanks to all the volunteers for continuing to make the UWA Holiday Bazaar the best of the best!

UWA had150 vendors, so we needed the help and talents of all these wonderful UWA members to manage the Bazaar: Kristina Ahlnas, Sine Anahita, Louise Anderl, Barbara Braley, Anne Brenner Armstrong, Carol DeVoe, Celeste Goering, Helen Howard, Shirley Jewett, Carol Johnson, Ute Kaden, Mary Keskinen, Mariclare Langan, Ellen Lopez, Joy Morrison, Star Patterson, Lorraine Phillips, Anupma Prakash, Bess Rounds, Alexis Runstadler, Rachel Seale, Margaret Short, Janet Taylor, Judy Williams, and Alison York. The vendors were vocal with their appreciation of you.

A special thanks to the working committee members who organized the Bazaar:  Cynthia Dorman, Susan Hurley-Glowa, Kathy Ferrell, Ginny Kawasaki, Rita McGrath, Rita Osborne, Kayt Sunwood, Elizabeth Shapland, Janet Satchwell, August Abukasis Judy Williams, and Laura Walsh. You did so much to assure that things ran smoothly.

Thank you to UWA members who encouraged their friends and family to attend the Bazaar. This year we had a remarkable number of UWA friends who turned out to help us. They are Barbara Day, Susan Dearborn, Wendy Camber, Cathy Curby, Craig Dorman, LaVonne Gullickson, Mary Farrell, Sheila Finch, Jean Wadland James, Sarah McConnell, Jeanette Moore, Michell Newton, Mark Nielsen, Dan Osborne, Monica Owens, Anna Maria Richards, Adrienne Stanley, Amythe Strobell, Pam Webster and Cindy Williams. As you can see, with the help of all these wonderful people, the Holiday Bazaar could not have been anything short of a success.

Because of the efforts of all our volunteers, UWA received many wonderful compliments and we are receiving requests from the friends of friends to be on the vendor mailing list for the November 7 & 8, 2009 Bazaar. We are now forming the 2009 committee.  If you would like to participate, please contact me at nielsen@mosquitonet.com. –Georgene Nielsen

BE  PART OF CABIN FEVER DAZE

A Cabin Fever get together is in the planning stages. Many people in Fairbanks have multi-faceted lives with  a variety of passions and interests.  Over the years, UWA members and their guests have attended UWA Cabin Fever events and have been entertained and delighted to learn about those interests.

Coordinator Rita Osborne will select a Sunday in late January or in February for this traditional UWA winter doldrums cure. We are looking forward to UWA Cabin Fever Daze to shake off the blues of long, cold, dark days and nights!

Do you have something you would like to share or do you know someone who does?  Rita would be interested. UWA members and guests look forward to an afternoon of socializing and developing a new talent or getting started on an intriguing craft. Give Rita Osborne a call at 479-4535, if you can assist with the planning of this event.

BOOK CLUB

November's book, Pride and Prejudice, proved to be wonderful read and provided for some excellent discussion.  Elizabeth Shapland provided a great deal of background material and we enjoyed talking about the various types of pride and prejudice found in the novel and how they relate(d) to both Austen's time and our own.

For December, we are reading The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, which is a young adult title. It is a semi-autobiographical novel about a young boy growing up in two worlds - the Spokane Indian reservation and the neighboring white high school, which he is the first Indian to attend. There is much to discuss which might relate to the lives of Native Alaskans as well.  And Alexie tells his story with humor and compassion. If you haven't read this book, I would recommend it.  It is a fairly quick read, as I re-read it on the trip home from Connecticut.  The Book Club will meet Sunday, December 14th from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the small room at Gulliver's upstairs.  I do have an extra copy of the book available.  RSVP to Laura Walsh - lwalsh@acsalaska.net or 374-8084.

I am also taking suggestions for January's non-fiction title.  So far we have TrafficThe Myth of MultitaskingThe Limits of PowerPackaging Girlhood, and a book about excellence that I don't have the exact title for yet.  Suggestions for February (adult fiction) are also welcome. – Laura Walsh

UNIVERSITY CHORUS PERFORMANCES

The University Chorus will be singing in the Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra Christmas concert on Sunday, December 7th at 4:00. Come watch and listen to your fellow UWA members perform. Tickets for this concert are available at the FSO box office.  As of December 5 there were seven tickets left.

Laura Walsh reports that the University Chorus will also be giving a ÒChristmas around the WorldÓ concert on Saturday, December 13th at 8:00 pm.  Tickets for this concert are available from Laura Walsh (lwalsh@acsalaska.net or 374-8084). Tickets are $5 for students/military/seniors and $10 for adults. Children age 12 and under are free!  Laura says she has four complimentary tickets to give away.

INTERNATIONAL DINERS

International Diners is a fun way to collect some great recipes and the dinners are a feast. The participants are asked to choose a month they will host a meal and decide upon a cuisine theme. Those whose homes are unable accommodate a dinner party may partner with someone who can. When the theme and date are announced, diners interested in attending contact the host and indicate if they are bringing a guest. The host plans a menu and each diner receives one dish to prepare. The cost of the meal is divided evenly among the participants. Every dinner offers a unique culinary experience with an extensive variety of dishes to savor.

The International Diners next gathering is scheduled for Saturday, December 13th at the home of Jennifer Chambers. The cuisine will be Mexican. Please let Jennifer know if you're interested in coming by December 1st. You may email Jennifer at fsjsc13@uaf.edu or call 799-2905.  A recipe and directions to her home will be provided.

SALAD LUNCHEON

The Salad Luncheon group meets once a month at a memberÕs home. The hostess chooses the date. We each bring a salad and the hostess provides beverage, bread and dessert. If you would like to introduce a friend to UWA, please invite them to attend as your guest. ItÕs a fun way to meet with friends and relax

Ten intrepid UWA members braved the November weather for the recent  salad luncheon. Well prepared hostess, Cynthia Dorman simply smiled as she added more chairs around her table and enjoyed the company.

The December luncheon will be hosted by Elizabeth Shapland at noon on Tuesday, November 16th. She lives at 725 Cardinal Court and her phone number is 474-4725. Please give her a call to confirm if you are planning to attend.

The January luncheon date is open, so we are looking for someone to host. If you would like to be our hostess, either email Helen Howard at hmh@acsalaska.net or leave a telephone message at 488-2314, and together you can set the date.

WALK/SKI GROUP -  ALL WELCOME!

The walk/ski group meets at 11 AM Mon and Fri. for skiing (Ballaine Lake parking lot) and Thursday for walking (Big Dipper ice arena).  We have a minus 5 cut-off temp for skiing, determined by a phone call to 844 around 10 am.  If it is below minus 5 on Monday or

Friday, we will meet to walk at the Big Dipper instead of skiing.

No need to RSVP--just show up if you can--but if you have questions, please call Elizabeth at 474-4725.  Our group includes beginners as well as more advanced skiers, so don't hesitate to give skiing a try.

Holiday greetings to all! - Elizabeth

GAMES NIGHT

I would enjoy scheduling and hosting a Games Night - board games, card games, party games. Let me know if you are interested.  Laura Walsh, lwalsh@acsalaska.net or telephone 374-8084.
