FABULOUS FAIRBANKS FASHION SHOW
In 2007, we revived the UWA comic fashion show featuring ÒFairbanks wearÓ for the entertainment and enlightenment of new University faculty. This year the University WomenÕs Association and the WomenÕs Center joined in staging the Fabulous Fairbanks Fashion Show for the faculty orientation on Monday, August 18th in the Wood Center ballroom. UWA president, Kayt Sunwood modeled her clothing and equipment for research trips/travel to remote villages by small aircraft. Newcomers to Fairbanks admired the stunning ball gown that Nicole Moelders had on beneath all her winter wear. Helen Howard showed she can laugh at the cold in a classic Alaskan parka with fur ruff and sealskin mukluks trimmed with calfskin and beaver.Ê
FALL WELCOME TEA
We invite UWA members old and new to the Fall Tea, welcoming all who are interested in the University Women's Association. ÊPatty Hamilton will host the Tea on Sunday, September 14, 2008 from 2 to 4 PM at her home 431 Gold Dust Drive - Fairbanks, Alaska. This is an opportunity to introduce UWA to friends and newcomers. Invite them to the Tea!
Our theme is Òthe 1950ÕsÓ. Please wear or bring something from that decade. Tell us a story about it.
At the Fall Tea, you will have the opportunity to fill out the Membership Application form and chose from several UWA activities for the winter season. This yearÊthe Activity Group choices include Book Group, Ski/Walk Group, Salad Luncheon group, International Diners, the Fabulous Fairbanks Fashion Show, ÊScholarship Readers, Children's Play group, Creative Needlers and Games Night plus three scholarship fund raisers: the Fall and the Spring Recycle Sales and the 40th Annual Holiday Bazaar.
To RSVP or if you wish further information about these activities, please contact Membership Vice President Joy Morrison by calling 474-5055 or you may email <mailto:ffjfm@uaf.edu>ffjfm@uaf.edu .
These directions assume you are approaching from University Avenue/College Road: Take Farmers Loop Road to Ballaine Road. Turn left on to Yankovich Road, then right on to Gold Dust. PattyÕs house is 431 Gold Dust Drive. There is room for parking in a lot just below the house.
FALL CONTRA DANCE
The University WomenÕs Association will sponsor a free contra dance at the Wood Center ballroom on Sunday, September 21st from 8 to 11PM. Dance instruction will be provided by the caller, Lynn Basham, Ê
with live music by Polar Drive.
The wonderful thing about contra dance is that, if you can walk, you can contra dance. Each dance is taught and practiced before the music starts. Once under way, the caller reminds the dancers of the next move throughout the dance. No experience or special attire is necessary - just a pair of clean, comfortable shoes. ÊCome give it a try.
UWA FALL RECYCLE SALE
The 2008 Fall Recycle Sale is scheduledÊfor Saturday, October 25th, with set-up being done Friday evening, October 26th in the Wood Center ballroom.
As in the past, any one in the community is encouraged to move gently used items off their garage shelves and out of the backs of their closets and get them back into use by bringing them to the UWA Recycle Sale. UWA provides a place where sellers can drop off their items in the morning, we sell them beginning at noon, and the sellers return in the late afternoon to collect their money (and any of their items that did not sell).
August-Michelle Abukasis (cell phone 799-3025 / home 452-5263) is chairing the event. Please contact her if you are interested in working on the Sale and pre-shopping. HelpersÊareÊneeded for a variety of shifts to cover between 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. the day of the Sale.

Soon we will put up posters directing interested sellers to locations where tags and itemized Recycle Sale sheets can be picked up.
SALAD LUNCHEON
The Salad Luncheon group meets once a month at a memberÕs home. The hostess chooses the date. We each bring a salad and the hostess provides beverage, bread andÊdessert. If you would like to introduce a friend to UWA, please invite them to attend as your guest. ItÕs a fun way to meet with friends and relax
Helen Howard hosted the August Salad Luncheon. August-Michelle Abukasis writes, ÒThe salad luncheon at Helen's was lovely in her cozy home nestled in the trees. After we had our salads and dessert we enjoyed conversation and the warm sun in her yard.
Myllie Thomas invites you to this monthÕs Salad Luncheon at her home at 666 11th Avenue, Unit #101 at noon on Monday, 29th September. Her phone number is 479-7377 and she would appreciate an RSVP if you plan to attend.
The October luncheon date is open, so we are looking for someone to host. If you would like to be our October hostess, either email Helen Howard at <mailto:hmh@acsalaska.net>hmh@acsalaska.net or leave a telephone message at 488-2314 andÊtogether you canÊset the date.
SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE
Five recipients of UWA Scholarships for the 2008-09 school year were picked from a field of ten applicants. They have all been invited to the UWA Fall Welcome Tea.
The UWA Scholarship committee chaired by Alexis Runstadler and Sine Anahita has selected the following students to receive scholarships: Mariah Rachelle Acton, Jennifer S. Chambers, Tamara S. Kornfield, Karaline M. Naegele and Jessica L. West.
UWA HOLIDAY BAZAAR
The 40th annual UWA Holiday Bazaar is set for Saturday and Sunday, November 8th and 9th at the Wood Center. We expect to have over 100 vendors each day. We need the help and talents of all UWA members to make this Bazaar a success. The Bazaar is the main source of funding for the UWA scholarships.
Holiday Bazaar committee members August Abukasis, Helen Howard, Susan Hurley-Glowa, Ginny Kawasaki, Georgene Nielsen and Kayt Sunwood completed the mail out of registration materials to our many registered vendors on August 27th. Our heartfelt thanks go to Vonna Husby for providing her handsome conference area as workspace for the mail out.
Please join the Holiday Bazaar committee and help with the lottery for assignment of vendor tables at 10:30AM to 2:30 PM on Saturday, September 27th. Elizabeth Shapland will lead this group effort. You are especially needed if you have had experience with the lottery process in prior years.
On Tuesday, September 30th from 10AM to 1PM there will be a work party to finish any remaining lottery tasks and to mail out of the lottery results. We need members to help. Please contact Georgene at 479-0988 ÊÊor <mailto:nielsen@mosquitonet.com>nielsen@mosquitonet.com if you are able to help.
Our UWA Holiday Bazaar message telephone, 456-4009, is receiving vendor inquiries. Please refer friends who are crafters to that number or to our email, fbuwa@uaf.edu.
WALK/SKI GROUP
Elizabeth Shapland returned to Fairbanks at the end of August and welcomes input about the best time and place to meet for a walk, to watch the colors changing in the fall. Please contact Elizabeth at 474-4725 or boxshapland@alaska.net if you wish to walk weekdays with UWA members.
FROM THE EDITOR
September is a busy month for our members, but now is the time to look ahead to another good year for UWA. At this time we need to remember that UWA is a service organization as well as a social one. We raise money for scholarships given to UAF students and we support University based institutions like daycare at Bunnell House and the Summer Arts Festival. And, of course, we welcome newcomers to Fairbanks and help them get through their first Arctic winter with a comic fashion show of Fairbanks winter wear, a walking Ðskiing group and a book discussion group. UWA sponsors a September contra dance, holds the popular Recycle Sale in October and puts on the Holiday Bazaar in November. Interested UWA members and their guests gather for an International Diners meal and for a salad luncheon each month.
The editor wants to remind you that it is time to renew your membership. If you donÕt get the chance to renew at the Fall Tea, please send your dues to Joy Morrison, UWA Membership Vice President. You can find the membership form on our website at <http://www.uaf.edu/uwa/membership.pdf>www.uaf.edu/uwa/membership.pdf or you may print out the form to be found at the end of this monthÕs newsletter.
You can send the completed form with your check for $15 directly to Joy Morrison, 816 5th Avenue, Fairbanks, AK 99701 or to the address on the form. The new membership Directory will be issued at the end of October. LetÕs all be in it! - Georgene
