WHAT A RECYCLE
SALE!
There was a good turn out for the UWA Fall Recycle Sale on Saturday, October 25th in the Wood Center ballroom. Rita Osborne recalls, ÒThe many happy faces leaving our UWA fall Recycle Sale
made it a worthwhile day for the thirty-six UWA members and friends who
volunteered. There was a smiling 3 year-old child dragging a big bag of plastic
blocks purchased for $3. There was
a UWA spouse who bought four Toyota tires. Some of us were able to sell a few items and take home a few
treasures.Ó
ÒThanks to August-Michelle
Abukasis for chairing this big event. A BIG thanks to all the volunteers--we
could not have done it without you.Ó
Recycle Sale chair,
August-Michelle Abukasis writes, ÒI would like to take the time to recognize
the following people who helped me on Saturday for the Fall Recycle: Rita
Osborne, Cam & Bob Carlson, Alison York, Georgene & Mark Nielsen,
Mariclare Langdon, Celeste Goering, Nilima Hullavarad, Ipshita Mazi, Bess
Rounds, Carol Johnson, Carol DeVoe, Agrita Draba, Rita McGrath, Kayt Sunwood, Anne
Brenner Armstrong, Kat Ferrell, Janet
Satchwell, Syrilyn Tong, Joann Healy, Roberta Eastman, Mark Dallman, Amythe Strobell, Judi &
Trip Triplehorn, Mary and Zach Keskinen,Monica Owens, Margaret Short, Rachel Seale, Laura
Walsh, Barbara Braley, Janet Taylor, Kathy McGowan and Elizabeth Shapland.
ÒI appreciate all that you did. I couldnÕt have done it
w/out your generosity. Especially thank you to the ones who donated their
recycle sale proceeds to UWA. If there's anyone's name I have forgotten I am
very sorry! Thanks so much for all your help.Ó - August
Treasurer Laura Walsh says,
ÒIt looks like we made around $420 on the sale, including the donations of
almost $100. There will probably be a bill from the University for the
Wood Center costs, so I will wait a while to make a final report.Ó
40th ANNUAL UWA HOLIDAY BAZAAR
UWAÕs main scholarship fund raiser, the Holiday Bazaar is set for Saturday and Sunday, November 8th and 9th at the Wood Center. We have 150 vendors coming, so we will need the help and talents of all UWA members to manage the Bazaar and make this fund raiser a success.
For the days of the Bazaar, we need our
members to fill positions as vendor check-in, door attendant, quality control or
floor walker. Rita Osborne and Ginny
Kawasaki will be telephoning members to fill those shifts.
Our UWA Holiday Bazaar email, fbuwa@uaf.edu, continues to receive vendor inquiries. Please refer friends who are
crafters to that email address or to our message telephone, 456-4009.
MEMBERSHIP
DIRECTORY
The new membership directory
is being printed and will be available at the Holiday Bazaar. Please pick up
yours there if possible, as it will save UWA mailing costs. Electronic
versions of the directory can also be produced if you would like them.
Available formats are .pdf, .vcf, text (comma or tab-delimited), and
Now-Contact.
It is preferred that you
contact Laura Walsh at lwalsh@acsalaska.net , but you may call 374-8084. – Laura Walsh
NIGHT OF MUSIC AND COMEDY
On Saturday, November 8th, after a day of
volunteering and buying at the Holiday Bazaar, you can enjoy a Night of Music
and Comedy in Schaible Auditorium at UAF at 6:30pm.
Hear both Irina Rivkin, the Award-winning original world-folk, live-looping harmony
artist on tour from Berkeley, CA and Alma, an ethical comic, committed to being kind, while still being
hilariously funny.
UAFÕs own Dr. Inna Rivkin, IrinaÕs twin sister, will
open the show with her own original music. For a preview of Irina RivkinÕs
music, check out her website: www.myspace.com/irinarivkin
.
Here are a couple of reviews: ÒHot, harmony-rich vocals... rhythm
& sound would pass as a Russian Sweet Honey in the Rock." - Angela
Page, SING OUT!
"Beautiful lyrical melody, the added voice over of
earthy harmony, and finally the texture of beatbox all performed live with the benefit of electronic
looping." - Janie Roberts, Venue Owner, Wild Janes
BOOK CLUB
Book Club coordinator Laura
Walsh writes ÒThe Book Club will meet Sunday, November 16th from 3:00 pm to
around 5:00 pm upstairs at Gulliver's Books. We will be discussing Pride
and Prejudice by Jane Austen. I have an extra copy of the book that
is available to keep or pass on, if anyone needs one.Ó
ÒThe December book,
traditionally a children's/young adult book, will be The Absolutely
True Diary of a Part Time Indian by Sherman Alexie. I am tentatively
scheduling the December meeting for Sunday, December 14th. Please let me
know ASAP if there are major conflicts, although it is hard to avoid them
entirely in December.Ó
It is preferred that you RSVP
to lwalsh@acsalaska.net , but you may call 374-8084. – Laura Walsh
FLOT PERFORMANCE
Fairbanks Light Opera Theatre will present ÒThe Most Happy
FellaÓ starring Bill Reed and Brandon Michael on November 14 through 16 and November
21 through 23 at the West Valley Performing Arts Center. Tickets are available
at FLOT, P.O. Box 72787, Fairbanks AK 9907. Come watch and listen to your
fellow UWA member, Helen Howard perform. She is in the chorus.
INTERNATIONAL DINERS
International Diners is a fun way to collect some
great recipes and the dinners are a feast. The participants are asked to choose
a month they will host a meal and decide upon a cuisine theme. Those whose
homes are unable accommodate a dinner party may partner with someone who can.
When the theme and date are announced, diners interested in attending contact
the host and indicate if they are bringing a guest. The host plans a menu and
each diner receives one dish to prepare. The cost of the meal is divided evenly
among the participants. Every dinner offers a unique culinary experience with
an extensive variety of dishes to savor.
The International Diners next gathering is scheduled
for Saturday, December 13th at the
home of Jennifer Chambers. The
cuisine will be Mexican. Please let Jennifer know if you're interested in
coming by December 1st. You may email Jennifer at fsjsc13@uaf.edu or
call 799-2905. A recipe and
directions to her home will be provided.
SALAD
LUNCHEON
The Salad
Luncheon group meets once a month at a memberÕs home. The hostess chooses the
date. We each bring a salad and the hostess provides beverage, bread
and dessert. If you would like to introduce a friend to UWA, please invite
them to attend as your guest. ItÕs a fun way to meet with friends and relax
Helen Howard writes: The October luncheon was hosted by
Judy Williams. A delicious series of salads were enjoyed together with Judy's
home-made rolls and a steamed date pudding with sauce. Eight people attended
and we all had a very good time. Thank you, Judy.
The November luncheon will be hosted by Cynthia Dorman at noon on Tuesday, November 18th. She lives at 1020 Baneberry
and her phone number is 457-4428.
Please give her a call to confirm if you are planning to attend.
Elizabeth Shapland will host the December salad
luncheon on Tuesday the 16th at noon.
The January
luncheon date is open, so we are looking for someone to host. If you would like to be our hostess, either email Helen Howard at hmh@acsalaska.netor leave a
telephone message at 488-2314, and together you can set the date.

TRUE DIVERSITY LECTURE & SMASHING THE CEILING
CONCERT
One outstanding event during International Education
Week at UAF November 17-21is Magdalen Hsu-LiÔs True Diversity Lecture and
Smashing the Ceiling Concert. This performance is scheduled on Tuesday,
November 18th at 7:00 pm in Wood Center Ballroom at UAF.
Magdalen Hsu-Li presents her TRUE DIVERSITY LECTURE
(RAISING AWARENESS IN OUR COMMUNITIES AND OURSELVES) intertwined with her
SMASHING THE CEILING CONCERT (THE INTERSECTION OF RACE, GENDER, AND THE ARTS),
a high energy, live music evening featuring Magdalen and her drummer on vocals,
guitar, piano, drums, and percussion. Dialogue about identity, racism and bi,
Asian American, and feminist issues is interspersed between songs and is
implicit in many song themes and lyrics.
MagdalenÕs
interspersed interactive lecture addresses how we can begin to raise diversity
awareness in ourselves and in our community. It outlines multicultural
statistics, helps us understand our own diversity, explores the difference
between programming and instinct, examines the influence of family, community,
and environment in our behavior & programming, assists in uncovering inner
programming which we may not be aware of, encourages the importance of
listening to and seeing the world through each other's ears and eyes, and gives
us tools for taking action and options for involvement.
