CREATIVE NEEDLERS
ÒHave we gotÊa deal for you!ÊCreative Needlers will get to see Locker Hooking in actionÊat their Wednesday, March 19th meeting. During a trip to Las Vegas for a family reunion, (No...no casinos! Just great family times and a trip to Hoover Dam) Cam Carlson happened upon a locker hooking demonstration at one of the Vegas quilt shops. It got her really fired up about this very old craft. So, whether you are a part of the Creative Needlers group or not, youÕre welcome to join us and get in on the demo!Ê
Normally we meet at Frieda TownshendÕs home. Not having had time to clear the date with our hostess, a different meeting spot might be needed. So, call Cam (479-2348, up until midnight) to check on the location. Then grab your needles, which ever kind you prefer, and join us on March 19 for a few hours...or just come to watch and visit!Ó

SPRING RECYCLE SALE
As in the past, any one in the community is encouraged to move gently used items off their garage shelves and out of the backs of their closets and get them back into use by bringing them to the UWA Recycle Sale. UWA provides a place where sellers can drop off their items in the morning, we sell them beginning at noon, and the sellers return in the late afternoon to collect their money (and any of their items that did not sell).
The 2008 Spring Recycle Sale is setÊfor Saturday, March 22nd. We will welcome volunteers for all tasks, including, check-in, floor walkers, finance, cashier, cutter/adder, clean-up, set-up, and check-in. We also could use your help with pre-sale set up the night before, Friday, March 21st starting at 8:30pm. Volunteer shifts are open for Saturday, starting with merchandise check-in at 7 am. Shifts last about 3 hours and we end with the 5:00pm clean-up.
Anyone interested in volunteering for the sale may contact Lizz Focella at 474-6360 or at <mailto:fywoc@uaf.edu>fywoc@uaf.edu . Please contact her if you have questions or if you are interested in working on the Sale and pre-shopping.
Fliers will be posted shortly, giving information to those interested in selling at the sale.
SALAD LUNCHEON
The Salad Luncheon group meets once a month at a memberÕs home. The hostess chooses the date. We each bring a salad and the hostess provides beverage, bread andÊdessert. If you would like to introduce a friend to UWA, please invite them to attend as your guest. ItÕs a fun way to meet with friends and relax
The women who attended the February salad luncheon send their thanks to Cora Cook for hosting.
The next Salad Luncheon will be held on March 18 at the home of Myllie Thomas at 666 11th Avenue, Apartment 101 in Fairbanks. To get there you can take a left on Cushman Street at 11th, or find a shortcut from Gaffney behind the Wells Fargo bank. Please RSVP by calling 479-7377.
The April luncheon date is open so we are looking for someone to host. If you would like to be our April hostess, please email Helen Howard at <mailto:hmh@acsalaska.net>hmh@acsalaska.net or giveÊCynthia Dorman a call at 457-4428 andÊtogether you canÊset the date.
This in from Helen Howard: ÒThe May Luncheon will be at Mariclare Langan's home 576 Hilltop Avenue on May 21st. I shall not be here to send out a reminder, so please make note at this time. Please phone Mariclare to RSVP at 479-2332.
Directions: >From College Road take Farmer's Loop for 2.4 miles. Turn left on Scenic Loop, just after the 4 lane road changes to two lanes. Go 1 ¸ blocks to the top of the hill. There will be several mail boxes and a homemade wooden sign that says: "Hilltop Ave." Turn uphill on Hilltop and drive 1/2 block to the dead end. MariclareÕs log home will be directly in front of you. "576" is posted at the bottom of her driveway. There is room for just 2 or 3 cars to park near the house, so the able-bodied should probably walk up the 50-foot driveway.Ó - Helen
SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE
The UWA Scholarship application period for the 2008-09 school year scholarship awards will run from February 1 to March 31, 2008. The scholarship committee will review the applications during the month of April and winners will be announced by the first of May. We are anticipating quite a few applications so if you haven't yet expressed interest in helping review scholarship applications, please let co-chairs Alexis Runstadler (acrunstadler@yahoo.com) or Sine Anahita (sine.anahita@uaf.edu) know.
BOOK GROUP
The book club will meet on the fourth Tuesday of the month at Gulliver's Books as this time seems to work for the most people.
When the book club met February 26th they discussed The OmnivoreÕs Dilemma. ÒWe were a small group but we had a good discussion of food marketing and food quality with an intriguing question about what kind of diet you would have in Alaska if you tried eat only food grown locallyÓ, says Laura Walsh.
March's book is In a Sunburned Country by Bill Bryson - a travel book about Australia. This book is a lighthearted and fun look at one of the big countries "down under". The meeting will be at 6:30 on Tuesday, March 25th at Gulliver's. For more information, you may email Laura Walsh at <mailto:lwalsh@acsalaska.net>lwalsh@acsalaska.net or call 374-8084.
Although it was previously announced that for April we would read Alcatraz versus the Evil Librarians, that one will be postponed for a while.
Instead, AprilÕs book will be Bel Canto by Ann Patchett, about which one reviewer wrote: ÒJoined by no common language except music, 58 international hostages and their captors forge unexpected bonds.Ó ÒWith the omniscience of magic realism, Ann Patchett flits in and out of the hearts and psyches of hostage and terrorist alike, and in doing so reveals a profound, shared humanity. Her voice is suitably lyrical, melodic, full of warmth and compassion.Ó
WALK/SKI GROUP
To all those interested in walking and/or skiing: We will meet MWF at 10:30 at Ballaine Lake if the temperature is warmer than minus 6 degrees F (We recommend that you call 844 around 9 AM to find out the temperature). The group waits 5 to 6 minutes at the parking lot and then heads out with whoever is there. The pace is moderate and the ski 45 to 75 minutes in length. The group meets to walk at the Big Dipper Ice Arena if it is colder than 5 below. Join us for some free exercise and chat.
If you have any questions, call Elizabeth Shapland at 474-4725 or <mailto:ffmab@uaf.edu>ffmab@uaf.edu .
GAMES NIGHT
Laura Walsh would like to invite all who are interested to a Games Night at her home, on Sunday, March 23rd, at 6:30. Spouses and friends are welcome. You may RSVP to Laura at <mailto:lwalsh@acsalaska.net>lwalsh@acsalaska.net or call for directions at 374-8084.
INTERNATIONAL DINERS
International Diners is a fun way to collect some great recipes and the dinners are a feast. The participants are asked to choose a month they will host a meal and decide upon a cuisine theme. Those whose homes are unable accommodate a dinner party may partner with someone who can. When the theme and date are announced, diners interested in attending contact the host and indicate if they are bringing a guest. The host plans a menu and each diner receives one dish to prepare. The cost of the meal is divided evenly among the participants. Every dinner offers a unique culinary experience with an extensive variety of dishes to savor.
A South African dinner is being planned. Details will be sent out at a later date.
UWA MOM & KIDÕS GROUP
No date has been scheduled for a March play group. If you are interested in scheduling a Mom and kidÕs get together at your home or another location like the Library or Gymnastics, Inc, give Alexis Runstadler a call at 452-1044.
