JUNE DATES TO REMEMBER
Monday, June 16 at noon ----------- Salad Luncheon
AT THE MAY ANNUAL MEETING
Seventeen of our members turned out for the UWA annual meeting Sunday, May 4 in the Honors House on the UAF campus. Treasurer Laura Lynn Walsh reported the 2007 Holiday Bazaar grossed $18,000 before costs. Due to a steep increase in the cost of University services, the Bazaar profit was significantly less this past year. UWA has just under $3,000 in our checking account and $12,000 in savings.
This past season UWA provided nine Spring 2008 scholarships. Three scholarship recipients, Mariah Rachelle Acton, Paula Lisa Daabach and Tess Elaina Caswell, attended the Annual Meeting and received their Certificates of Achievement from Alexis Runstadler, UWA Scholarship Co-Chair.
New UWA member, Kathy Ferrell, of the Tanana Valley Campus, was willing to coordinate publicity for University Women's Association. Sherry Modrow has returned to Fairbanks and she also became a member.
Candidates for offices were nominated. Officers were approved by those members present and board members were appointed for the 2008-2009 season.
Members voted to contribute $1000 from our treasury; $700 to Bunnell Childhood Lab and $300 to provide student scholarships to the Summer Arts Festival.
Aldona Jonaitis, Director of University of Alaska Museum of the North gave us a humorous PowerPoint presentation on the much misunderstood subject of totem poles.

FROM THE FAIRBANKS SUMMER ARTS FESTIVAL
Dear friends at UWA,
Once again thank you for your generous support. ÊI don't publicize scholarships in our catalog, but when someone worthy asks for financial help, I provide the help. ÊOne talented woman who is coming from Ohio is deserving of help. ÊI waived her $450 reg. fee so your $300 is helping w/ a portion of that. ÊShe's a bassoonist. ÊHer name is Chien-Hui Haynes. ÊI'm sure she'll be performing at some Lunch Bites. ÊI'd like you to meet her.
Sincerely, Jo Scott
SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE
The Scholarship Committee co-chairs Alexis Runstadler and Sine Anahita met to review the committee's recommendations regarding the ten applications for the 2008-09 academic year scholarships. Of the ten applicants, five received high scores from the committee and will be receiving awards - one award of $800 and 4 awards of the full $1500. The winners are in the process of being contacted, so their names will be announced in the July newsletter.Ê
Thanks so much to scholarship committee reviewers Susan Hurley-Glowa, Kathy Gruenig, Alice LaBarre, Joy Morrison, and Elizabeth Shapland for their time and their detailed reviews. Thank you to Uma Bhatt for making information updates on the website for scholarships and to librarian Julia Triplehorn for graciously keeping copies of the applications available at the Keith Mather Library at West Ridge to make things easier for the reviewers. For those of you who didn't get a chance to review applications this time, the next review period will be April 2009 for the 2009-10 academic year scholarships. -ÊAlexis RunstadlerÊÊ
INTERNATIONAL DINERS
International Diners is a fun way to collect some great recipes and the dinners are a feast. The participants are asked to choose a month they will host a meal and decide upon a cuisine theme. Those whose homes are unable accommodate a dinner party may partner with someone who can. When the theme and date are announced, diners interested in attending contact the host and indicate if they are bringing a guest. The host plans a menu and each diner receives one dish to prepare. The cost of the meal is divided evenly among the participants. Every dinner offers a unique culinary experience with an extensive variety of dishes to savor.
Laura Walsh writes about the May gathering of the International Diners at of Joy MorrisonÕs home for South African cuisine: ÒIt was outside in their back yard and was fun. ÊIt featured fish casserole, lamb stew, chicken casserole, and a custardy dessert.ÊThe weather was cool, but nice in their garden and we had a very enjoyable time.Ó
CREATIVE NEEDLERS
Huck weaving was the main topic at UWA Creative Needlers meeting on Wednesday, May 21.Once again, Creative Needlers met at Frieda Towshend's home. We thank Frieda Townshend for hosting our group for the whole school year. Since huck weaving originated in Scandinavia, aÊkransekake, Norwegian almond ring tree cake was served.
Whether you call it huck weaving (have to credit the Swede's with this), Swedish weaving, Swedish darning, darning on huck, huck embroidery, itÕs all one and the same... Huck weaving is generally done on huckaback fabric which has vertical float threads on its surface; single float threads on the "right" side and double floats on the "wrong" side. Embroidery floss or pearl cotton is woven under the float threads on one side only to achieve the desired design.ÊNone of the design thread shows on the back; it is all on the front of the fabric. Huck weaving can be used to decorate numerous items: garments, pillow tops, bedding, towels, table runners, place mats, napkins, bags (all kinds - small to large), belts, bread covers, napkin rings, book marks, book covers, bell pulls, hot-pads, kleenex cases.......you name it!ÊSome notes on huck weaving are available from Cam Carlson (479-2348).
Frieda Townshend, Cynthia Dorman and Cam Carlson tried their hand at this needle art. ÊRita Osborne knitted diligently on socks she is determined to finish...and sought the group's help on turning the heel. An interest has been expressed that embroidery be the focus at another meeting.ÊÐ Cam CarlsonÊÊ
Creative Needlers will probably rest for the summer and not try to compete with busy summer schedules. There is a possibility that Cam will host a summer gathering at some point, if enough schedules can accommodate it.ÊNewcomers are always welcome! If you are interested in being contacted for that gathering, call Cam at 479-2348.
SALAD LUNCHEON
The Salad Luncheon group meets once a month at a memberÕs home. The hostess chooses the date. We each bring a salad and the hostess provides beverage, bread andÊdessert. If you would like to introduce a friend to UWA, please invite them to attend as your guest. ItÕs a fun way to meet with friends and relax
Mariclare Langan hosted the May salad luncheon. Helen Howard writes ÒWe had a very good time and the salads were a good complementary selection. Mariclare provided us with a pleasant atmosphere and good cheer. It was nice to see Rita Osborne looking and feeling very much better. We were also glad to have two visitors, one was a friend of Rita, and the other was Connie Olson, who was UWA President in 1982-83Ó.
The June salad luncheon will be at Barbara BraleyÕs home at 1301 Maya Lane at noon on Monday, June 16th.
Please email <mailto:bbraley@acsalaska.net>bbraley@acsalaska.net or phone Barbara at 457-8957 to RSVP.
The July luncheon date is open, so we are looking for someone to host. If you would like to be our July hostess, either email Helen Howard at <mailto:hmh@acsalaska.net>hmh@acsalaska.net or leave a telephone message at 488-2314 or giveÊCynthia Dorman a call at 457-4428 andÊtogether you canÊset the date.
WALK/SKI GROUP
Women interested in walking with the group this summer should contact Cynthia Dorman (457-4428) in June. If there is interest, the Monday/Wednesday/Friday 10:30 gathering at the Moore Street entrance to Pioneer Park can continue through the summer, or another time and place can be chosen.Ê
Elizabeth Shapland will return at the end of August and will welcome input about the best time and place to meet for a walk, to watch the colors changing in the fall.
