CREATIVE NEEDLERS

Cam Carlson reports: In December the UWA Creative Needlers had a great first meeting graciously hosted by Frieda Townshend.  It was a "Bring It & Brag" session at which we got to see a variety of needler things: knit mug mats, cute cat quilt, eyelash scarves, c-x stitch items, knitted take-along booties (for adults) and more!  Frieda has kindly offered her home for all our meetings; great, on-the-flats location and plenty of room.  Thanks, Frieda

Moving on to January, the Creative Needlers were again hosted by Frieda Townshend on the 16th.  Knitting was the favored activity of the day: slippers, hats, and a scarf.  One needler was weaving on an inkle loom (you wouldn't believe the size of that needle!) and another caught up on some mending.  Celeste Goering shared some great fabric samples with us which she had picked up on her Asian travels.  Good conversation, snacks and a great relaxing couple of hours. Those present were Rita Osborne, Celeste Goering, Cynthia Dorman, Frieda Townshend and Cam Carlson.

We'll gather again on Wednesday, February 13 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. so, grab a project and join us.  If you have something to "Bring & Brag," do that too.  Yes, once again we will meet at FriedaŐs home, 4649 Princeton Drive. Call Cam at 479-2348 if you can join us. Bring any needlework you'd like to work on and any project or ideas you'd like to share

OUR MEMBERS GET AROUND

Cynthia and Craig Dorman are leaving for Peru in mid-February and will return mid-March.

SALAD LUNCHEON

The Salad Luncheon group meets once a month at a memberŐs home. The hostess chooses the date. We each bring a salad and the hostess provides beverage, bread and dessert. If you would like to introduce a friend to UWA, please invite them to attend as your guest. ItŐs a fun way to meet with friends and relax

Our January luncheon was hosted by Grace Moore at her lovely home atop the hills overlooking Fairbanks. It was attended by 10 people, and enjoyed by all.

The February luncheon has been arranged with Cora Cook for noon on Monday, February 11. Cora lives at 455 Gold Dust Drive off Yankovich Road, just past the HamiltonŐs house. Please call Cora at 479-2487 to RSVP and to receive directions.

If you would like to be our March luncheon hostess, email Helen Howard at hmh@acsalaska.net or leave a telephone message at 488-2314 and together you can set the date.

SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE

The UWA Scholarship application period for the 2008-09 school year scholarship awards will run from February 1 to March 31, 2008.  The scholarship committee will review the applications during the month of April and winners will be announced by the first of May.  We are anticipating quite a few applications so if you haven't yet expressed interest in helping review scholarship applications, please let co-chairs Alexis Runstadler (acrunstadler@yahoo.com) or Sine Anahita (sine.anahita@uaf.edu) know.

BOOK GROUP

This year marks the 100th year anniversary of the publication of Anne of Green Gables, by Lucy Maud Montgomery. "Anne of Green Gables, Is She Still Relevant?" was the subject of the most recent meeting of the Book Club at Gulliver's.  We had a most excellent discussion of some of the themes in the book that are relatively timeless in their appeal, e.g., feelings of not being wanted, peer pressure, having goals and dreams, feeling of being physically unattractive, and having a best friend.

And, courtesy of Laura's annotated edition of Anne, we read that the "original meaning of the word cordial implies a spirituous drink, good for the heart, but here it is used for a cooling non-alcoholic drink rather like a "shrub," concocted from fresh raspberries simmered in water and sugar to make a light syrup." We also shared some of our favorite moments with Anne.

We are trying to set up a regular time for the book club meetings. The fourth Tuesday of the month at Gulliver's seems to work for most of the people who replied. The best alternate date suggested was a similar Wednesday. Input is still welcome. –Laura Walsh

February's book is The OmnivoreŐs Dilemma: a Natural History of Four Meals. The meeting will by hosted by Elizabeth Shapland at 6:30 on Tuesday, February 26 in the conference room upstairs at Gullivers bookstore. Elizabeth writes:  Are you interested in where your food comes from and how it is produced?  Then please come join us for a discussion of Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma, a fascinating account of America's agribusiness industry, the two types of organic farming (large and small scale), and the pros and cons of hunting and gathering.  Even if you don't find time to read the book, if you are interested in the topic I think you will enjoy the discussion.  Pollan is an excellent writer and presents some amazing facts and stories.  For more information, contact Elizabeth at 474-4725 or ffmab@uaf.edu.

Upcoming Books

March: In a Sunburned Country by Bill Bryson

April: Alcatraz versus the Evil Librarians by Brandon Sanderson

WALK/SKI GROUP

To all those interested in walking and/or skiing:  We will meet MWF at 10:30 at Ballaine Lake if the temperature is warmer than minus 6 degrees F (We recommend that you call 844 around 9 AM to find out the temperature). The group waits 5 to 6 minutes at the parking lot and then heads out with whoever is there.  The pace is moderate and the ski 45 to 75 minutes in length. The group meets to walk at the Big Dipper Ice Arena if it is colder than 5 below.  Join us for some free exercise and chat.

If you have any questions, call Elizabeth Shapland at 474-4725 or ffmab@uaf.edu .

INTERNATIONAL DINERS

International Diners is a fun way to collect some great recipes and the dinners are a feast. The participants are asked to choose a month they will host a meal and decide upon a cuisine theme. Those whose homes are unable accommodate a dinner party may partner with someone who can.  When the theme and date are announced, diners interested in attending contact the host and indicate if they are bringing a guest. The host plans a menu and each diner receives one dish to prepare. The cost of the meal is divided evenly among the participants. Every dinner offers a unique culinary experience with an extensive variety of dishes to savor.

The International Diners next gathering is set for Sunday, February 10th with appetizers at 6:00 and dinner at 6:30 in the home of John and Laura Walsh. The cuisine will be Suriname. Those wishing to attend may email Laura at lwalsh@acsalaska.net or call 374-8084. A recipe and directions to her home will be provided. There is plenty of time for additional people.  Laura won't send out recipes until this weekend, February 2-3.

UWA MOM & KIDŐS GROUP

No date has been scheduled for a March play group.  If you are interested in scheduling a Mom and kidŐs get together at your home or another location like the Library or Gymnastics, Inc, give Alexis Runstadler a call at 452-1044.
