SPRING RECYCLE SALE
The 2008 Spring Recycle Sale, chaired by Lizz Focella of the WomenÕs Center, took place at Wood Center on Saturday, March 22. Our gratitude goes to these volunteer helpers who made the event possible: Bob and Cam Carlson, Laura Walsh, Agrita Draba, Celeste Goering, Liz Peltola, Teal Rogers, August-Michelle Abukasis, Rita McGrath, Josh Ernst, Don and Judy Triplehorn, Elizabeth Shapland, Georgene Nielsen, Barbara Farris, Stephanie Gottschalk, Rhoda Gottschalk, John Ashcraft, Kayt Sunwood, Joy Morrison, Nilima Hullavarad, Anahit Avagyan and Lily Lewis.

CREATIVE NEEDLERS
Here's the scoop from the Creative Needlers: Fabric Locker Hooking was the hot topic Wednesday, March 19 as Frieda Townshend once again graciously hosted the UWA Creative Needlers.  Not to be confused with rya or latch hook, locker hooking has a unique tool all its own (think crochet hook with a large eye opposite the hook end).  Take long strips of fabric 1 1/4 inches wide and pull fabric loops up through a rug canvas with the hook end of the tool.  When there are several fabric loops on the locker hook tool, pull the tool out through the loops.  A "locker" string that has been threaded through that large eye will now have been drawn through all the fabric loops. Thus,..."locking" the loops in place.

If you would like more information on this craft, call Cam Carlson at 479-2348.  There is a basic information sheet that can be mailed to you.  She has bought out the local supply of locker hooks and is willing to share!
On Wednesday, April 16, the CNs will again meet at Frieda Townshend's (4649 Princeton Drive, 479-2898) at 1-3 pm. You are always invited to "Bring It and Brag".  Whatever your project or accomplishment, we'd love to see and hear about it.  If you have an anniversary quilt, friendship quilt or any other special quilt you'd like to share, bring it.  The hot topic for the day will be Wagon Wheel Rugs.  Bring a project you'd like to work on or just come to visit.  Call Cam if you have any questions. Thanks. - Cam
SALAD LUNCHEON
The Salad Luncheon group meets once a month at a memberÕs home. The hostess chooses the date. We each bring a salad and the hostess provides beverage, bread and dessert. If you would like to introduce a friend to UWA, please invite them to attend as your guest. ItÕs a fun way to meet with friends and relax

The March Salad Luncheon was held on March 18 at the home of Myllie Thomas. As usual, Myllie was the perfect hostess and the array of salads on her unique two-tiered circular table was delicious. Our hostess had added to the salad selection with an unusual cheese dish. Many thanks to Myllie for a delightful lunch with a touch of St. PatrickÕs Day. Š Helen and Cynthia

Cynthia Dorman will host the April salad luncheon on Monday, April 14th, at twelve oÕclock.  Directions: FarmerÕs Loop to Skyline Drive. When you have driven 3/4 of a mile up Skyline, turn left onto Baneberry. ItÕs the first house on the right.  Note: The Baneberry street sign is hard to see when approaching from down hill.

The May Luncheon will be at Mariclare Langan's home 576 Hilltop Avenue on May 21st. Please phone Mariclare to RSVP at 479-2332. The June luncheon date is open so we are looking for someone to host. If you would like to be ourJune hostess, pleasegive Cynthia Dorman a call at457-4428 and together you can set the date.

MAY ANNUAL MEETING
We extend our thanks to Joy Morrison who is coordinating the UWA annual meeting which traditionally takes place on a Sunday in May. Watch your mail box or check your email for an announcement of time and date. The election of officers will take place at that meeting. We hope our members will make nominations (this may include nominating the member currently serving in a position) for one of the following posts: President, Service Vice President (currently vacant), Social Vice President, Membership Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. You may send nominations to UWA secretary Georgene Nielsen at nielsen@mosquitonet.com, call 479-0988 or mail them to 1410 IvanÕs Alley Š Fairbanks, Alaska 99709.

SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE
The application deadline for the 2008-09 academic year scholarships was March 31, 2008.  We received between 5 and 10 complete applications but are still sorting them all out and double checking eligibility. Alexis Runstadler will be contacting the members of the scholarship committee soon, once the applications are copied and available for review.

Again this round, the scholarship applications will be available for review by at two UAF libraries - the Keith Mather Library at the Geophysical Institute and the main Rasmuson Library. The Mather Library has free parking and people without UAF stickers can park at the meters in front of Signer's Hall to access the Rasmuson Library.  Please contact co-chairs Alexis at 452-1044 or acrunstadler@yahoo.com or Sina Anahita at sine.anahita@uaf.edu if you would like to be a scholarship application reviewer

BOOK GROUP
For now, there is no book club until further notice. - Laura Walsh

WALK/SKI GROUP
Riverside walk, any one? By the time this newsletter comes out, the ski season will surely be over, unless we get some new snow.  But the weather is warm enough for outside walking and the paths clear enough.  Meet us if you can at the Moore Street entrance to Pioneer Park, along the river, and we will walk towards downtown at 10:30 MWF.

And some time soon Carol DeVoe plans to lead us on a riverside walk from downtown towards the army base.  Should be fun!  Maybe we will follow that with lunch at a downtown restaurant.  Give me a call if you are interested: Elizabeth at 474-4725 or email ffmab@uaf.edu .

INTERNATIONAL DINERS
International Diners is a fun way to collect some great recipes and the dinners are a feast. The participants are asked to choose a month they will host a meal and decide upon a cuisine theme. Those whose homes are unable accommodate a dinner party may partner with someone who can.  When the theme and date are announced, diners interested in attending contact the host and indicate if they are bringing a guest. The host plans a menu and each diner receives one dish to prepare. The cost of the meal is divided evenly among the participants. Every dinner offers a unique culinary experience with an extensive variety of dishes to savor.

A South African dinner is being planned. Details will be sent out at a later date.
