FALL WELCOME TEA
The 2007 University Women's Association annual Welcome Tea was hosted by Patty Hamilton on Sunday, September 23 at the UA president's home. We had 37 in attendance including ten new members and their guests. It was a beautiful fall afternoon and, as always, Patty was a gracious host. The return of long-term UWA members Bobbie Rice, Cam Carlson, Elizabeth Shapland, and Jo Scott were especially welcomed.

This year UWA offers the eleven different activities groups. Members old and new were encouraged to sign up and to complete new Membership Applications. The additions were a Bridge group, a Kids and Moms group (started last June) and Creative Needlers (any kind of needlework/ knitting).

The theme was "Go Green" President Kayt Sunwood designed an ice- breaker "get-to-know-you" game of 24 green categories. We had to consult each other to find someone who regularly changes the air filters, or who recycles plastic; someone who is a member of Calypso Farm, an organic gardener, etc. We learned more about our members, and focused on earth-friendly practices. The winner received a beautiful firm green cabbage from Kayt's garden - one of the first she had ever grown.

We were particularly pleased that Floss Caskey brought her daughter Kirsten and her talented
grand daughter Marina, age fifteen, an accomplished violinist. Marina played to an appreciative audience, bringing praise from Jo Scott and Lorraine Phillips.

The cakes, pastries, biscuits and finger foods were delicious. Patty Hamilton and board members provided a range of different teas and coffee, and for folks like Joy and Helen, provided real milk for the tea!

2007 HOLIDAY BAZAAR
The 39th annual UWA Holiday Bazaar is coming Saturday and Sunday, November 3rd and 4th at Wood Center. We expect to have over 100 vendors each day. UWA needs the help and the talents of all our members to make this Bazaar a success. The Bazaar is the main source of funding for the scholarships that UWA awards twice yearly.

Ginny Kawasaki will organize our volunteer roster for the Bazaar. She will be calling you soon. A variety of shifts are available on either Saturday or Sunday. Come be a volunteer and get a look at all the lovely merchandise before you shop.

If you can t make it to a work party or to committee meetings, but would be willing to take on a Bazaar task, (like newspaper publicity, coordinating musical performance groups, or putting up posters around town), let us know by calling Georgene Nielsen (479-0988) or email  nielsen@mosquitonet.com .

A printable copy of this year s Holiday Bazaar poster is included at the end of this newsletter. Boost the Bazaar by posting it in the break room at work or by giving a flyer to interested friends or relatives.

FALL RECYCLE SALE
The UWA Fall Recycle Sale, chaired by Lizz Focella of the Women s Center, was held Saturday, October 6th in the Wood Center ballroom. Our thanks to Lizz for long hours spent putting this event together.

The community was encouraged to get items back into use by bringing them to the UWA Recycle Sale. Over thirty sellers dropped off their items in the morning, and several remained as volunteers to work on the sale. Throughout the day our volunteers provided the enthusiasm and skills needed to make this well organized effort a success.

We hope the Recycle Sales will continue twice yearly, in both spring and fall.

INTERNATIONAL DINERS

International Diners is a fun way to collect some great recipes and the dinners are a feast. The participants are asked to choose a month they will host a meal and decide upon a cuisine theme. Those whose homes are unable accommodate a dinner party may partner with someone who can.
When the theme and date are announced, diners interested in attending contact the host and indicate if they are bringing a guest. The host plans a menu and each diner receives one dish to prepare. The cost of the meal is divided evenly among the participants. Every dinner offers a unique culinary experience with an extensive variety of dishes to savor.

The first gathering of the International Diners will be Saturday, October 20th, 7pm, at the home of Alan and Barbara Braley. The cuisine will be Hungarian dishes. If you are interested in participating, email Barbara at <mailto:bbraley@acsalaska.net>bbraley@acsalaska.net or call 457-8957.
