UWA Holiday Bazaar

The 39th annual UWA Holiday Bazaar ran for two days, Saturday and Sunday, November 3rd and 4th at the Wood Center. We had over 167 vendors. The Bazaar is a big undertaking and this year the chairperson position was shared by Georgene Nielsen and Rita Osborne

We want to extend our heartfelt thanks the volunteers who helped Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday. The following people made this yearŐs bazaar a great fund raiser for the UWA Scholarship fund: Louise Anderl, Sine Anahita, Natasha Beadle, Barbara Braley, Cam and Bob Carlson, Cora Cook, Carol Davis, Susan Dearborn, Craig and Cynthia Dorman, Barbara Farris, Sheila Finch, Linette Finstad, Shari George, Celeste Goering, Betty Higbie, Shirley Jewett, Carol Johnson, Mary Keskinen, Mariclare Langan, Ruth Levey, Rita McGrath, Kathy McGowan, Mark Nielsen, Dan Osborne, Anupma Prakash and her daughter Tanja Gens, Bess Rounds, Margaret Short, Janet Taylor, Barbara Travis, Judie Triplehorn, Deb Weber, Alexis Runstadler, Judy Shapiro, Frieda Townshend, Deb Weber, Judy and Frank Williams and Allison York.

Thanks to the Scholarship Committee for providing signs and flyers to display. You made the public more aware of the BazaarŐs fund raising goal. Special thanks go to the Bazaar planning committee: UWA President Kayt Sunwood, Elizabeth Shapland (lottery and vendor relations), Helen Howard (music and membership directory), Floss Caskey (newspaper ads and beautiful posters), Ginny Kawasaki (volunteer coordination), and our treasurer Laura Walsh.

Finally, we want to thank all the UWA members who encouraged family and friends to attend.

SALAD LUNCHEON

The Salad Luncheon group meets once a month at a memberŐs home. The hostess chooses the date. We each bring a salad and the hostess provides beverage, bread and dessert. If you would like to introduce a friend to UWA, please invite them to attend as your guest. ItŐs a fun way to meet with friends and relax.

Judy Williams hosted a delicious luncheon on October 23rd. Thank you, Judy!

This monthŐs salad lunch will be at Ruth LeveyŐs house at 2790 Waldheim Drive, on Friday, November 16th at 12:30.  Please contact Ruth to RSVP and get directions to her house.  Her phone number is 458-7161 or you may e-mail her at rlevey@alaska.net.

If you would like to be our December or January luncheon hostess, please give Cynthia Dorman a call at 457-4428 or email Helen Howard at hmh@acsalaska.net and together you can set the date.

BOOK GROUP

Book Club members had a good discussion of Ender's Game at the October meeting ; touching especially on issues of using genre literature to address moral concerns, as, for instance, the adults use Ender (a very young child) for adult purposes (to save mankind).

The book for November will be Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson. This is the story of one man's effort to thank a Pakistani village for sheltering him while he recovered from illness by building them a school. His effort burgeoned into 50 schools and other community projects. It is a very inspiring look at another way to "fight a war".

There is a choice of two dates for the November meeting; Tuesday, November 27th or Wednesday, November 28th. If you are planning to come to this meeting, PLEASE let Laura Walsh (lwalsh@acsalaska.net or 374-8084) know as soon as possible, so she can choose a day and a location. Possible locations are LauraŐs house on Chena Ridge, Dana Elmore's house near North Pole, or GulliverŐs Book Store.

The book selected for December, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie is not yet generally available, and so the group will postpone that discussion. Instead, Laura proposes a December discussion of J. K. Rowling's final book in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. No January book has been chosen yet, but the February book will be Animal, Vegetable and Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver or The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollen. That meeting will be hosted by Elizabeth Shapland. More details later.

Please contact Laura Walsh (lwalsh@acsalaska.net or 374-8084) if you are interested in being added to the email list for the Book Club. Nominations for future books can also be sent to Laura. If you have read something you would really enjoy discussing, let her know.

GAMES NIGHT

Ruth Levey will host a Games Night in early December at her home at 2790 Waldheim Drive in the Goldstream Valley. Contact Ruth (rlevey@alaska.net) or Laura Walsh (lwalsh@acsalaska.net or 374-8084) if you are interested.

THE 2007- 2008 MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY

The new UWA Membership Directory is out! Here's a big thank you to all of you who picked up your copy at the UWA Holiday Bazaar, saving UWA the cost of mailing.

We ask that you write in these three changes to your new Directory:  1) Under Michelle BartlettŐs entry, please add this email address: michelle.bartlett@uaf.edu. 2) Ruth LeveyŐs email address has changed to rlevey@alaska.net. 3) To correct the UWA Officers section (on page 2) cross out the second telephone number listed for Social Vice-President Joy Morrison and write in 474-5055.

WALK/SKI GROUP

Here is the current plan for walking and skiing times.  The group can modify this as time goes on if people give coordinator, Elizabeth Shapland other input.

Skiing: Meet on Mondays and Fridays at 10:30 at the parking lot next to Ballaine Lake on Farmers Loop Road.  The group will wait 5-6 minutes and then head out with whoever is there.  Pace should be moderate and the ski 45-75 minutes in length.

Walking: Meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:30 at the Dog Park just off 2nd Avenue near the Riverfront Theatre (east end of the  trail that goes alongside and behind the Carlson Center). Parking here will allow us to walk along the river toward the Carlson Center and then on toward Pioneer Park if we wish, keeping us off the roads.  So far this path has been very well plowed, making for easier walking than at Creamer's Field. Those who have dogs can bring them for a bit of exercise in the fenced-in dog park before the walk, if they wish.  We'll probably walk for 45- 60 minutes.

Call or e-mail Elizabeth Shapland (474-4725 or ffmab@uaf.edu) if you have any questions or suggestions about other times/locations.

SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE

The Scholarship Committee is currently reviewing the scholarship applications for spring 2008.  There were 10 complete applications!  Application materials are available for review at two locations on campus - the reference desk of the Rasmuson Library and the reference desk of the Keith Mather Library on the 2nd floor of the Akasofu (IARC) Building.  If you have time to help review these applications before the end of November, contact one of the Scholarship Committee co-chairs - Alexis Runstadler (acrunstadler@yahoo.com) or Sine Anahita (sine.anahita@uaf.edu).

Thanks to Sine for putting together UWA Scholarship informational signs and fliers to display at the Holiday Bazaar!  The next round of scholarship advertising will start in February 2008 for the 2008-09 school year.

INTERNATIONAL DINERS

International Diners is a fun way to collect some great recipes and the dinners are a feast. The participants are asked to choose a month they will host a meal and decide upon a cuisine theme. Those whose homes are unable accommodate a dinner party may partner with someone who can.  When the theme and date are announced, diners interested in attending contact the host and indicate if they are bringing a guest. The host plans a menu and each diner receives one dish to prepare. The cost of the meal is divided evenly among the participants. Every dinner offers a unique culinary experience with an extensive variety of dishes to savor.

Barbara Braley, International Diners coordinator, writes: Our first attempt at International Diners garnered only two responses. To achieve a full menu we need a minimum of 6 participants. We will try again. The first gathering of the International Diners will now be Saturday, November 17th at 7pm
, at the home of Alan and Barbara Braley. The cuisine will be Hungarian dishes. If you are interested in participating, please respond by November 10th. You may email me at bbraley@acsalaska.net or call 457-8957.

UWA MOM & KIDŐS GROUP

No date has been scheduled for a November play group.  If you are interested in scheduling a Mom and kidŐs get together at your home or another location like the Library or Gymnastics, Inc, give Alexis Runstadler a call at 452-1044.
