UWA ANNUAL MEETING MAY 20
Fourteen of us turned out for the UWA annual meeting May 20 in the Farmhouse Visitor’s Center at Creamers Field. Outgoing treasurer Barbara Day reported the 2006 Holiday Bazaar made a profit of $8934.63. During the 2006-07 school year, our organization awarded eight scholarships to UAF students totaling $7000. No scholarships will be given for the Fall 2007 semester, as no members of the UWA Scholarship Committee met to select recipients. UWA has $13,280.40 in our savings account and $423.03 in our checking account.

Membership VP, Helen Howard brought informational materials and an updated list of members to supplement the Membership Directory that was published November 2006. New UWA member, Joy Morrison, UAF Director of Faculty Development, was interested in helping the University Women's Association meet its general purpose of being a support, particularly for new faculty. She brought Kayt Sunwood, manager of the UAF Women’s Center, who also became a member.

Candidates for offices were nominated. Officers were approved by those members present and board members were appointed for the 2007-2008 season.

Members voted to contribute $300 to each of the following: KUAC, UAF Museum of the North, Bunnell Childhood Lab and the Summer Arts Festival.

The sentence “Membership selection is open to everyone without regard to race, creed, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, disability, status as a Vietnam era or disabled veteran, marital status, changes in marital status, pregnancy or parenthood pursuant to applicable state and federal laws.” was added to the membership section of the UWA bylaws as it is required of all University organizations.

Alexis Runstadler gave us a splendid PowerPoint presentation on the history of Creamers Field and current endeavors of the Friend’s of Creamers Field. We had lovely, May weather so, so five of us donned our comfortable shoes and enjoyed a guided walk.

SALAD LUNCHEON
Salad Luncheon coordinators, Cynthia Dorman and Helen Howard, wish to announce that they were taking the summer off. Salad Luncheons will resume again in the fall.  The group has met once a month at a member’s home. It was a fun way to meet with friends and relax.

For those who have not attended a Salad Luncheon before: The Salad Luncheon group meets once a month at a member’s home. The hostess chooses the date. We each bring a salad and the hostess provides beverage, bread and dessert. If you would like to introduce a friend to UWA, please invite them to attend as your guest.

UWA KID’S GROUP
Please contact Alexis Runstadler about a mom’s and kid’s group for those interested in more children’s activities. The group will begin meeting in June. Call 452-1044 or send an email to acrunstadler@yahoo.com.

DO YOU HAVE A MOTORCYCLE?
Former UWA member Colleen Jones writes “I have heard of a great many UAF WOMEN motorcycle riders.  If anyone would like to join in on Friday night rides, starting from the Regal Cinema's at 7:00 p.m., the Arctic Servant's Christian Motorcyclists Association has a safe, non-drinking group that welcomes newcomers.  This group welcomes all riders, regardless of bike style.”

Feel free to contact Colleen Jones at 474-6664 for further information.

INTERNATIONAL DINERS
The dinner for the month of May was hosted by Jim Dixon and Barbara Day on May 17.  It was an evening of Senegalese cuisine.  The guests prepared such dishes as Arachides Grillées and New Year’s Guacamole and Salsa mix which were the appetizers.   La Salade Côte Cap Verte and Avocat aux Crevettes Senegalaises were the salad selections. Poulet Yassa and Mafé were the main dishes--one was chicken and one was pork.  A wonderful Mamadou’s Banana Glace ended the evening.

Beginning this month, UWA International Diners is on hiatus until fall. At the Fall welcome tea in September members will have a chance to sign up to participate. Our thanks go to Barbara Braley who will continue to coordinate the International Diners. To quote Helen Howard, “She has done a sterling job of it.”

For those who have not participated in International Diners before: A host chooses a month and decides upon a cuisine theme. The host contacts all International Diners who have indicated that they plan to attend.  Based on the response, the host plans a meal, and all participants will get a recipe to prepare.  Participants are asked to keep a monetary total of what they spend to prepare their dish. During the dinner, all totals are added together, and an average sum is assigned to each person.  Thus, a person who prepared an inexpensive dish will likely end up paying some money, and those who prepared an expensive dish will likely get some money back. It is a fun way to collect some great recipes and the dinners are a feast.

GOING TO ENGLAND SOMETIME SOON?
One of our UWA members, Helen Howard, is renting her late parents' house in Cornwall, England by the week. The bungalow was built in 1933 and is comfortable but not fancy. It sleeps up to six in two large bedrooms and a loggia.

Helen would like to provide details to anyone who is interested. It is in a very desirable location, near Rock, which has become the Mecca for the upper crust, sailing, golfing and surfing crowd. The house is about half way between the surfing beach at Polzeath and the sailing club at Rock, with a view across the mouth of the estuary of the River Camel to Stepper Point and the Atlantic Ocean. There are three golf courses almost within view.

You may contact Helen by calling 488-2314 or e-mailing her at  <mailto:hmh@acsalaska.net>hmh@acsalaska.net.
