CABIN FEVER
Many people in Fairbanks have multi-faceted lives and have various passions
and interests. Over the years UWA members and their guests have attended
the
February Cabin Fever event and been entertained and delighted to
learn about those interests. Do you have something you would like
to share or do you know someone that does? We would be interested. We
have one possible topic and need two additional ones. Presentation time
is short--only 15 minutes each.
Looking for CABIN FEVER event coordinator
In February we hold the UWA Cabin Fever event to shake off the blues of long,
cold, dark days and nights! We need a social planner for this event. Please
contact Rita Osborne at (479-4535) or <mailto:Osborne@gvea.net>Osborne@gvea.net
as soon as possible so a date in February can be selected.
SALAD LUNCHEON
The Salad Luncheon group meets once a month at a member's home. The
hostess chooses the date. We each bring a salad and the hostess usually
provides beverages, bread and dessert. If you would like to introduce
a friend to UWA, please invite them to attend as your guest. It's a fun way
to meet with friends and relax. Cynthia Dorman - 457-4428 and Helen
Howard - 488-2314 are coordinating for the group. Salad Luncheon
hostess are needed for the remainder of the winter season.
Interested hostesses may e-mail a positive reply to <mailto:hmh@acsalaska.net>hmh@acsalaska.net or
to <mailto:c.dorman@gci.net>c.dorman@gci.net.
Cynthia Dorman reports “We had a great time at Grace Moore's in December.
Her new addition is lovely, and we all ate very well indeed.” Thank you,
Grace, for a wonderful winter afternoon.
This month Myllie Thomas (479-7377) will hold the salad luncheon in her home at 666 Eleventh Avenue - #110 in downtown Fairbanks. The date and time are still to be announced, but it will be sometime after January 19th. Watch for an announcement later this month.
Looking for SPRING RECYCLE SALE Chairperson
The spring recycle sale needs a chairperson or co-chairs. It is usually
held in April. Can you help do it? Is there another member you would
like to co chair? Please call either Rita Osborne (479-4535) or Georgene Nielsen
(479-0988); or e-mail a positive reply to <mailto:Osborne@gvea.net>Osborne@gvea.net
or nielsen@ mosquitonet.com .
UWA KID’S GROUP
A mom’s and kid’s group is being planned for those interested in
more children’s activities. Please contact Alexis Runstadler if
interested at 452-1044 or acrunstadler@yahoo.com .
SKI/WALK GROUP
Join Cynthia Dorman for walking on Tuesday mornings at the Big Dipper. Anyone
interested in walking on the indoor track at the Big Dipper Ice Arena, give
Cynthia a call (457-4428) and she'll meet you there. There is currently
no user fee.
As for skiing, it was put on hold due to the cold weather. Now that we are having a warming trend, perhaps by the end of this week it will warm up enough to go. If so, ski group members usually meet at the Ballaine Lake parking lot at 10:30 AM on Tuesday and Friday. Cynthia suggests that anyone interested should get in touch at 457-4428 to see what is happening.
GAMES NIGHT
The first Games Night held on Tuesday, January 2nd was very enjoyable. We showed
how expert we were at Scrabble and Geography Pursuit. There are still plenty
more games we could try, though. Is anyone up for a second night? Call or
email Laura Walsh, 374-8084 or <mailto:lwalsh@acsalaska.net>lwalsh@acsalaska.net.
INTERNATIONAL DINERS
For those who have not participated in International Diners before: A host
chooses a month and decides upon a cuisine theme. The host contacts all International
Diners who have indicated that they plan to attend. Based on the response,
the host plans a meal, and all participants will get a recipe to prepare. Participants
are asked to keep a monetary total of what they spend to prepare their dish.
During the dinner, all totals are added together, and an average sum is assigned
to each person. Thus, a person who prepared an inexpensive dish will
likely end up paying some money, and those who prepared an expensive dish
will likely get some money back. It is a fun way to collect some great recipes
and the dinners are a feast.
In December the International Diners gathered at the home of Ruth and Hal Levey. We brought ethnic holiday dishes from each family’s national origin. What a wonderful variety of dishes we had! After dinner we played Skittles or Mexican train dominoes or just chatted . It was a memorable and relaxing holiday evening.
This month, come and enjoy dishes like Poulet Yassa and Mafe at the home of Barbara Day and Jim Dixon at 3114 Chinook Drive. You are invited to enjoy an evening of West African cuisine on Saturday, January 20th with appetizers at 6pm, dinner at 7pm. Call 479-4306 or email Barbara at bdday@hotmail.com to get your recipe before Thursday, January 18th.
BOOK GROUP
The book club will meet at 6:30 Tuesday, January 16 at the home of Laura Walsh.
Call her for directions at 374-8084. We will discuss Running
With Scissors which is presently a #1 best seller of non-fiction, and a recent
movie. The book is the account of a young boy growing up in Los Angeles
under challenging circumstances with intelligent but neurotic parents, and
an eccentric psychiatrist as his adoptive father. If you haven't read the
book, you can come anyway to get acquainted and to help pick a nonfiction
book to read for March.
February's fiction book will be The Kite Runner, the account of an Afghan father and son who immigrate to America during the Russian occupation.
For more information, call Mariclare (Mary) Langan at 479-2332.
NEW MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY
The new UWA Membership Directory was available at the Holiday Bazaar. Many
of our members picked up their copy.

This includes a few past members we believe still wish to continue membership but they either haven't paid the $15 renewal fee or haven’t sent in their Membership Application form. If you have not sent in the form, please do so. These are useful in case you wish to change your choice of groups for participation. Applications can be downloaded from www.uaf.edu/uwa/
As always, if any members have friends who would like to join UWA, please contact Vice President – Membership (488-2314), Helen Howard.
