SALAD LUNCHEON
The Salad
Luncheon group meets once a month at a memberŐs home. The hostess chooses the
date. We each bring a salad and the hostess provides beverage, bread and dessert.
If you would like to introduce a friend to UWA, please invite them to attend as
your guest. ItŐs a fun way to meet with friends and relax

Helen Howard writes ŇMy
thoughts go to Ruth Levey's lovely November Salad Lunch. It was such a pleasant,
relaxed occasion. She is a wonderful hostess! Thank you, Ruth. And the salads
were all so good, far better than going out to a restaurant.Ó
Elizabeth Shapland will host
the December salad luncheon on Friday,
December 14th at noon.
Her address is 725 Cardinal
Court (off Kingfisher, which is off
Ballaine Road).
There is limited parking, especially up by the house,
so please try to carpool. Unless you are the first or second car here,
Elizabeth asks that you please park at the end of the cul-de-sac and walk up
the drive. RSVP 474-4725 or
email boxshapland@alaska.net .
Grace Moore has kindly
offered to host the January luncheon on Thursday, January 10th at
12:00 noon, so add this to your calendar.
At the November luncheon, Helen Howard asked if anyone
knew of any other organization which had Salad Lunches. No one did. The
attendees agreed it's a great way to entertain and meet friends with very
little trouble in getting ready. If you would like to be our February luncheon hostess, please email Helen Howard at hmh@acsalaska.net or
give Cynthia Dorman a call at
457-4428 and together you can set the date.
BOOK GROUP
November's meeting was
postponed, due to illness.
December's meeting will be
held on Tuesday, December 11th at 7:00pm at Gulliver's Bookstore. We will discuss any of the books that we have
missed, including Three Cups of Tea and the December selection, Harry
Potter and the Deathly Hallows. We also traditionally do a book exchange
then. Bring a lightly used book to give to another attendee.
The February selection of the
Book Club will be the Omnivore's Dilemma by
Michael Pollan. That meeting will be hosted by Elizabeth Shapland. We
hope to hold the meeting at Gulliver's. Those of you who are interested in this
book might like to know that it is available in paperback, and Gulliver's has
it at 20% off.
Please contact
Laura Walsh (lwalsh@acsalaska.net
or 374-8084) if you are interested in being added to the email list for the
Book Club. Nominations for future books can also be sent to Laura. If you have
read something you would really enjoy discussing, let her know.
ADDRESS
CORRECTIONS
Ruth LeveyŐs
email address is rlevey@alaska.net
. Please add this correction to your copy of the UWA 2007-2008 membership
directory.
Membership vice president, Helen Howard
submitted these changes, so while youŐve got your directory open, note that Patty HamiltonŐs e-mail address is patty.hamilton@alaska.edu. Also, Bess
Rounds has added Scholarship committee to her list of UWA interests.
UNIVERSITY CHORUS
The University Chorus will perform
its fall semester concert at 8:00 pm on December 8th in the Davis Concert Hall,
UAF campus. This semester's program features African Christmas music. Tickets
are available from Laura Walsh (lwalsh@acsalaska.net or 374-8084) or at
the box office.
A limited program featuring
the first half of this concert will also be presented on Sunday, December 16th
at Zion Lutheran Church at 2982 Davis Road at 4:00 pm. The concert at the
church is free.
GAMES NIGHT
A Games Night will be held in
January at the home of Ruth and Hal Levey, 2790
Waldheim Drive in the Goldstream Valley. Let Ruth
(rlevey@alaska.net) or Laura Walsh (lwalsh@acsalaska.net or 374-8084) know if
you are interested in coming.
WALK/SKI GROUP
This in from Elizabeth Shapland: The skiing group has
gotten started, despite not very good snow. We meet on Mondays and Fridays at 10:30am at the parking lot
next to Ballaine Lake. The group
will wait 5 to 6 minutes and then head out with whoever is there. The pace should be moderate and the ski
45-75 minutes in length.
We seem to be having a harder time getting people out
for walks. I guess we will have to
put that on hold until the new year when perhaps people will want to suggest
some times for meeting at the Big Dipper (New Year's Resolutions??).
Call or e-mail me if you have any questions or
suggestions of times/locations: Elizabeth at 474-4725 or boxshapland@alaska.net
SCHOLARSHIP
COMMITTEE
The Scholarship Committee
co-chairs Alexis Runstadler and Sine Anahita met last weekend to tally up the
reviewers' scores on nine excellent applications for the Spring 2008
scholarships. The co-chairs decided that all nine applicants deserved
scholarship awards based on their applications and references. The award
recipients received monetary amounts from $700 - $1,100 based on their average
review scores. The nine scholarship recipients for the Spring 2008
semester are: Mariah Acton, Tess Caswell, Paula Daabach, Willow-Sarah
Greenwell, Jana Kreofsky, Megan Olson, Alice Orlich, Ida Petersen, and Rinu
Samuel.
Sine Anahita came up with the
wonderful idea of providing each scholarship recipient with a complimentary 1
year UWA membership and she has donated the money to UWA for that end. Thank
you, Sine!
Many thanks to the scholarship application reviewers for their time and
effort: Susan Hurley-Glowa, Nicole Mlders, Amanda Rosenberger, Margaret
Short, and Kayt Sunwood. Also, special thanks to librarian Julia
Triplehorn for graciously keeping copies of the applications available at the
Keith Mather Library up at West Ridge to make things easier for the reviewers.
For those of you who didn't get a chance to review applications this time, the
next review period will be April 2008 for the 2008-09 school year scholarships.
INTERNATIONAL
DINERS
International
Diners is a fun way to collect some great recipes and the dinners are a feast.
The participants are asked to choose a month they will host a meal and decide
upon a cuisine theme. Those whose homes are unable accommodate a dinner party
may partner with someone who can.
When the theme and date are announced, diners interested in attending
contact the host and indicate if they are bringing a guest. The host plans a
menu and each diner receives one dish to prepare. The cost of the meal is
divided evenly among the participants. Every dinner offers a unique culinary
experience with an extensive variety of dishes to savor.
The International Diners first gathering
of the season is scheduled for Sunday, December 16th at 5:00pm
for appetizers and dining at 5:30. This meal, featuring Hungarian cuisine, will
be held at the home of Barbara and Alan Braley.
Please let Barbara know before December 10th if you're interested in coming. You may email Barbara at bbraley@acsalaska.net
or call 457-8957. A menu item with recipe and directions to her home will be
provided.
UWA MOM &
KIDŐS GROUP
No date has been
scheduled for a December play group. If you are interested in scheduling
a Mom and kidŐs get together at your home or another location like the Library
or Gymnastics, Inc, give Alexis Runstadler a call at 452-1044.
