WHO’S GOT BUNNY BOOTS? - the Faculty Orientation Fabulous Fairbanks Fashion Show 12:30 Monday, August 20th
We were peering several years into the past for “things we used to do” when Cam Carlson told us that UWA once put on comic fashion shows featuring “Fairbanks wear” for the entertainment and enlightenment of new University faculty.

UWA and the Women’s Center will be doing a Fabulous Fairbanks Fashion Show at the UAF Orientation for new faculty and staff from 12:30 to 1PM on Monday, August 20th. UWA president, Kayt Sunwood says “I would sure be up for modeling my clothing and equipment for ‘research trips/travel to remote villages by small aircraft’”.  She has some other great ideas about things she or others could model.

Interested in joining the fun? The Women’s Center in the Eielson Building at UAF will be the contact point for people calling/emailing to volunteer to model and for details on how it will all work. Call the Women’s Center at 474-6360 with your ideas and fashion funnies or email them at <mailto:fywoc@uaf.edu>fywoc@uaf.ed .

If you know men who might be up for showing newcomers how to survive in Fairbanks, give them the Women’s Center contact information so we can put them in the line-up. The staff at the Women’s Center will develop a list of models, descriptions of what they will be modeling, a line up for “walking the stage” and text for the announcer.

PUT ON YOUR DANCING SHOES
Come and dance the night away. There will be a free contra dance for the fun, amusement and co-mingling of all who attend September 15th, from 8-11pm at the Wood Center Ballroom. It will feature live music and each dance is taught by the caller. No experience or special attire is necessary - just a pair of clean, comfortable shoes. If you can walk, you can contra dance!

For more information, call Barbara Braley at 457-8957 .

BOOK GROUP
This in from Laura Lynn Walsh “For August, we thought we would do book talks. Bring an old favorite or a recent discovery and entice us. Stay tuned for the late August meeting, which will be a re-take on is Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia by Elizabeth Gilbert for those who missed the discussion and wanted to do it anyway. We will also do book talks on books that you have read this summer and want to share.”

You may email Laura for information about the August time and location at <mailto:lwalsh@acsalaska.net>lwalsh@acsalaska.net or call her at 374-8084.

FALL WELCOME TEA
We invite UWA members old and new to the Fall Tea, welcoming all who are interested in the University Women's Association.  Patty Hamilton will host the Tea on Sunday, September 23, 2006 from 2 to 4 PM at her home 431 Gold Dust Drive - Fairbanks, Alaska. We hope our members collected names and contact numbers for those who are new in the area as they met them over the summer. This is an opportunity to introduce UWA to friends and newcomers. Invite them to the Tea!

Our theme is “Go Green”. Bring your energy saving ideas to share with us. Tell us about the ways you are saving the planet.

Please RSVP to Joy Morrison <mailto:ffjfm@uaf.edu>ffjfm@uaf.edu. or to Helen Howard, <mailto:hmh@acsalaska.net>hmh@acsalaska.net. 488-2314. (If telephoning, ask to leave a message on answering machine - not with Helen’s husband.)

These directions assume you are approaching from University Avenue/College Road: Take Farmers Loop Road to Ballaine Road. Turn left on to Yankovich Road, then right on to Gold Dust. Patty’s house is 431 Gold Dust Drive. There is room for parking in a lot just below the house.

FALL RECYCLE SALE
This is a call for people to help put together the Recycle Sale which is scheduled for Saturday, September 22nd, with set-up being done Friday evening, September 21st in the Wood Center ballroom. Helpers are needed for a variety of shifts to cover from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. the day of the Sale.  If you are available to help, please call the Women’s Center at 474-6360 (after August 17th, ask for Lizz, who will chair the event).

IRENE PEYTON’S VISIT
Former UWA president, Irene Peyton returned to Fairbanks in July for a visit. We hope her friends got in touch with Irene at Gael and Firmin Murakami’s party or at Ruth Levey’s home.

UWA KID’S GROUP
Contact Alexis Runstadler about a mom’s and kid’s group for those interested in more children’s activities. The group began meeting in June. Call 452-1044 or send an email to <mailto:acrunstadler@yahoo.com>acrunstadler@yahoo.com.

2007 HOLIDAY BAZAAR
The UWA Holiday Bazaar is November 3rd and 4th.  We expect to have over 100 vendors each day. We need the help and talents of all UWA members to make this Bazaar a success. The Bazaar is the main source of funding for the scholarships UWA awards twice yearly.

Come to the work party to prepare the first mailing to our Bazaar vendors Monday, August 27 from 1 to 3:30 PM at Vonna Husby’s offices at Raymond James Financial Services, 301 Cushman Street. Some off street parking is available from 4th Avenue. Thank you so much, Vonna, for this comfortable conference room as workspace.

Our UWA Holiday Bazaar message telephone, 456-4009, has already received vendor inquiries. Please refer friends who are crafters to that number or to our email fbuwa@uaf.edu.

If you can help plan the Bazaar, contact Georgene Nielsen (479-0988 or email <mailto:nielsen@mosquitonet.com>nielsen@mosquitonet.com) or Rita Osborne (479-4535 or email <mailto:rfrso@uaf.edu>osborne@gvea.net).

If you can’t make it to committee meetings, but would be willing to take on a task, (like newspaper publicity, coordinating UWA volunteers, or participation in the vendor lottery to assign tables) call either of us. We are eager to hear from you.

INTERNATIONAL DINERS
UWA International Diners is on hiatus until fall. The group will resume after our September gathering at the Fall welcome tea. Members both new and old will have a chance to sign up to participate at that time.

SALAD LUNCHEON
Although the Salad Luncheon coordinators announced that they were taking the summer off, Salad Luncheons will resume again in the fall.  The group will resume meeting once a month at a member’s home. It is a fun way to meet with friends and relax.

MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL
It is time to renew your UWA membership for 2008-2009. Membership is still $15 for the year. The membership form can be found on a separate page at the end of this newsletter or on the UWA website, <http://www.uaf.edu/uwa>www.uaf.edu/uwa. In order to be included in the printed 2007-2008 membership directory, your renewal form must be in by October 1.

If you attend the Fall Tea on September 23rd, you will have the opportunity there to fill out the Membership Application form. Our Membership Vice President Helen Howard would like to direct your attention to the Activity Group choices. This year they include Book Group, Ski/Walk Group, Salad Luncheon group, International Diners, Recycle Sale, Holiday Bazaar, Scholarship Readers, Children's Play Group, and Games Night.  We would be happy to add any new groups that someone would like to coordinate, possibly a Bridge group and/or a Knitting/Needlework group.

GOING TO ENGLAND SOMETIME SOON?
One of our UWA members, Helen Howard, is renting her late parents' house in Cornwall, England by the week. The bungalow was built in 1933 and is comfortable but not fancy. It sleeps up to six in two large bedrooms and a loggia.

Helen would like to provide details to anyone who is interested. It is in a very desirable location, near Rock, which has become the Mecca for the upper crust, sailing, golfing and surfing crowd. The house is about half way between the surfing beach at Polzeath and the sailing club at Rock, with a view across the mouth of the estuary of the River Camel to Stepper Point and the Atlantic Ocean. There are three golf courses almost within view.

You may contact Helen by calling 488-2314 or e-mailing her at <mailto:hmh@acsalaska.net>hmh@acsalaska.net.
