JOIN US FOR THE FALL WELCOME TEA
It's set for Sunday, September 17, 2006 from 2 to 4 PM, at the UAF
President's Residence, 431 Gold Dust Drive; Fairbanks, Alaska. The theme
this year will be to wear or bring something that reminds you of a book you
have enjoyed. Bring the book with you if you can, and we will try to match
books to participants.

This is a good time to introduce UWA to friends and newcomers. We hope our
members collected contact phone numbers for those who are new in the
community as they met them over the summer. Now is the time to give them a
call and invite them to the tea. We hope we will also be joined by some of
the students who have received scholarships
These directions assume you are approaching from University Avenue/College
Road:
Take Farmers Loop Road to Ballaine Road.
Turn left on to Yankovich Road, then right on to Gold Dust Drive.
SALAD LUNCHEON
The Salad Lunch group meets once a month at a member's home. The hostess
chooses the date. We each bring a salad and the hostess usually provides
beverages, bread and dessert. If you would like to introduce a friend to
UWA, please invite them to attend as your guest. It's a fun way to meet with
friends and relax.
Cora Cook hosted the Salad Luncheon on August 18th. Floss Caskey brought her
daughter, Kirsten and her granddaughter, Marina, who entertained us
delightfully with her violin.
There will be no Salad Luncheon in September. We encourage our members to
get together at the Fall Welcome Tea on September 17th.
If you would like to be our October luncheon hostess, please give Floss a
call at 457-4424 and together you can set the date.
RECYCLE SALE
The Fall Recycle Sale is set for Saturday, October 28. Helpers will be
needed for a variety of shifts to cover from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Please
contact Rita at osborne@gvea.net or 479-4535 if you would like to help with
this event.
MEMBERSHIP REPORT
Helen Howard, VP for Membership
At the recent Orientation Day for New Faculty, UWA had a display of photos
of our activities, and a revised and expanded brochure to hand out. A number
of new UAF faculty stopped by. They were given UWA brochures and were
invited to the Fall membership tea.
Of the 13 interested new faculty, several came from overseas: Christine
Hunter from New Zealand, Anne Christie from Australia, Karsten Hueffer from
Germany and Shu-Ping Lin from Taiwan. We welcome these international faculty
and hope they will want to join UWA. Let's make them welcome here in Alaska.
UWA will also have a display table in Wood Center on September 14th for the
Volunteer Fair from 11am to 2 pm. Please stop by and bring your friends.
MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL
It's time to renew your UWA membership for 2007-2008. The membership form
can be found as an attachment to this newsletter (you must have Adobe Reader
installed on your computer to open it) or you can get the form from the UWA
website, www.uaf.edu/uwa. In order to be included in the 2007-2008
Membership Directory, your renewal form must be in by October 1.

INTERNATIONAL DINERS
The International Diners will resume activity in October if enough members
sign up at the Fall Tea on Sunday, September 17th.
2006 HOLIDAY BAZAAR
The Holiday Bazaar is scheduled for two days; Saturday, November 4th and
Sunday, November 5th. We expect to have over 125 vendors each day. Many UWA
volunteers are needed for the Bazaar. Your help will be appreciated and is
very much needed. Please contact our volunteer coordinator, Ginny Kawasaki,
at 456- 5192 to sign up for a shift.
