SALAD LUNCHEON
The Salad Luncheon group meets once a month at a member's home. The hostess chooses the date. We each bring a salad and the hostess usually provides beverages, bread and dessert. If you would like to introduce a friend to UWA, please invite them to attend as your guest. It's a fun way to meet with friends and relax. Cynthia Dorman (457-4428) and Helen Howard (488-2314) are coordinating for the group.

Our compliments and our thanks to Judy Williams who hosted the salad luncheon on October 25th.

Cynthia Dorman will host the November luncheon at her home 1020 Baneberry Lane, Fairbanks. Phone 457-4428 to RSVP and to receive directions or email c.dorman@gci.net .  Cynthia writes “I'm inviting you all for the Salad Lunch at my house on November 16th at noon. Hope you can come.”

Salad Luncheon hostess are needed for the remainder of the winter season. Call Cynthia Dorman now at 457-4428 to have the best choice of those months.

RECYCLE SALE
The Fall Recycle Sale took place Saturday, October 28. As always, many willing volunteers helped with a variety of shifts. Co chairs Rita Osborne and Georgene Nielsen send warm thanks for the efforts of Bob and Cam Carlson, Carol Johnson, Roseanne Lamoreaux, Eva Rothman, Cynthia Dorman, Jane Reilly, Mary Beth Leigh, Mary Keskinen, Barbara Farris, Kathy McGowan, Liz Peltola, Teal Rogers, Laura Walsh, Beatriz Roederer, Barbara Day, Janet Taylor, Cora Cook, Mariclare Langan, Lars Osborne, and Alison York.

SKI/WALK GROUP
Group members are scheduled to meet at the Ballaine Lake parking lot at 10:30 AM on Tuesday and Friday. If anyone is interested in walking on the indoor track at the Big Dipper Ice Arena, give Cynthia Dorman (457-4428) a call and she'll meet you there. There is a use fee, but a card for multiple walks can be purchased at a reduced rate.

At the moment, the trails are not good and haven't been groomed, so skiing is put on hold until we get some new snow.

UWA ACTIVITY GROUPS
One of UWA’s most popular groups, the Salad Luncheons, needs a coordinator. Fifteen people have signed to participate in Salad Luncheons. This group plans to meet monthly, and coordination is not hard.

Another popular activity Group, the Scholarship Application Readers also needs a coordinator. Please contact UWA president, Rita Osborne, (479-4535) if you can head this group.

Newsletter editor, Georgene Nielsen would be glad to announce it in the UWA newsletter if you would like to organize any other groups, such as Needlework, Quilting, Sewing, Chess, or Play activities for children. Send your announcements to 479-0988 or <mailto:nielsen@mosquitonet.com>nielsen@mosquitonet.com.

Here’s a suggestion from Laura Walsh: “I am interested in hosting either a one-time event or a group if people are interested - games for grownups. I would include things like Blokus, Set, Scrabble, Apples and Oranges, and lots of others. My husband isn't interested in games, but I would enjoy playing them every once in a while.”

All those who are interested should contact Laura Lynn Walsh at 374-8084 or email lwalsh@acsalaska.net.

2006 HOLIDAY BAZAAR
This year’s Holiday Bazaar ran for two days: Saturday, November 4th and Sunday, November 5th.   We had over 161 vendors. The Bazaar is a big undertaking and this year the chairperson position was shared among Rita Osborne, Georgene Nielsen and Jane Reilly. First, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks the volunteers who helped Saturday and Sunday. The following people made those two days a great fund raiser for the UWA Scholarship fund: Louise Anderl, Cam Carlson, Kathy Wenzel, Cora Cook, Craig and Cynthia Dorman, Judy and Frank Williams, Carol Johnson, Mary Langan, Ruth Levey, Gael Murakami, Lorraine Phillips, Bess Rounds, Janet Taylor, Deb Weber, Wendy Rousalis, Mary Beth Leigh, Alexis Runstadler, Judy Shapiro, Barbara Farris, Kristina Ahlnas, Allison York, Kathy McGowan, Linnette Finstad and Laura Walsh.

Special thanks go to the Bazaar planning committee: Helen Howard (Membership Directory), Floss Caskey (publicity and beautiful posters), Ginny Kawasaki (volunteer coordination), Mary Keskinen (publicity), and our treasurer Barbara Day.

Because we did not have enough volunteer staff, UWA contributed to two campus organizations: Namastee India and Native Alaskan Business Leaders for providing us with additional staff.

Finally, we want to thank to all the UWA members who encouraged family and friends to attend.

Rita, Georgene and Jane.

INTERNATIONAL DINERS
For those who have not participated in International Diners before: A host chooses a month and decides upon a cuisine theme. The host contacts all International Diners who have indicated that they plan to attend. Based on the response, the host plans a meal, and all participants will get a recipe to prepare. Participants are asked to keep a monetary total of what they spend to prepare their dish. During the dinner, all totals are added together, and an average sum is assigned to each person. Thus, a person who prepared an inexpensive dish will likely end up paying some money, and those who prepared an expensive dish will likely get some money back. It is a fun way to collect some great recipes and the dinners are a feast.

The first meeting of the International Diners was held on October 28th at the home of Alan and Barbara Braley. Barbara tells us “International Diners ate happily and abundantly from a wonderful assortment of Asian food at our first dinner at the Braley's house.”

This month the International Diners will meet at the Thai House Restaurant on November 25th at 7pm. The Thai House has moved to 412 5th Avenue in Fairbanks. Please contact Barbara Braley at <mailto:bbraley@acsalaska.net>bbraley@acsalaska.net or call 457-8957 if you would like to attend.  She will tell the restaurant the exact number of diners by November 20th.

This just in from Ruth Levey: Hal and I will host a December International Diners dinner on the 16th of December at our house. I will send more details later or people can call me at 458-7161 or email <mailto:rlevey4@gci.net>rlevey4@gci.net.   Does anyone want to co-host it? Perhaps we could organize a meal around dishes from each family’s national origin. (My family came from England and Norway. Hal’s from the Czech Republic.) It might be fun to research the origins of our family names. <mailto:bbraley@acsalaska.net>

BOOK GROUP
Our book club, now called "Page-Turners Book Club," will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, November l4 at Gulliver's Bookstore on College Road. Food is available upstairs in their cafe. The book for November is The Good Earth by Pearl Buck.

The December meeting will be dinner at Wolf Run Restaurant on University Avenue. The date has yet to be determined. We have not designated a particular book to read, but bring a book you enjoyed for Christmas exchange. Our book selection for January will be Running with Scissors, a nonfiction book about growing up with a neurotic psychiatrist for a parent.  For more information, call Mariclare (Mary) Langan at 479-2332.

FOUND AFTER THE RECYCLE SALE
At the recent Recycle Sale, one of the baby car seats (or some other Cosco equipment) was either sold or returned to its owner without the important black web “tether” straps that went with it. Maybe someone who worked the Recycle Sale will recall who brought baby equipment and I could call them.
Thanks,
Jane Reilly

NEW MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY
The new UWA Membership Directory was available at the Holiday Bazaar. Many of our members picked up their copy.

If you have not sent in the form, please do so. These are useful in case you wish to change your choice of groups for participation.
