SALAD LUNCHEON
Elizabeth Shapland hosted the holiday season luncheon on December 19th. One of the guests remarked "I really enjoyed the salad luncheon at Elizabeth's house. It is a really good way to entertain and there is always a lot of good conversation among friends."
This note from Floss Caskey: Happy New Year to you all! 2005 Salad Luncheons were wonderful, thanks to all of you! I am now updating the 2006 Salad Luncheon list and do hope you will take a moment to let me know if you would like to participate. Also, if you would like to have lunch at your home, please call me at 457-4424.
The January salad luncheon will be at Cynthia Dorman's home on Friday, January 20th. Her address is: 1020 Baneberry Lane which is just off Skyline Drive. Please RSVP by calling Cynthia at 457-4428.
Helen Howard will host the salad luncheon in February.
The Salad Lunch group meets once a month at a member's home. The hostess chooses the date. We each bring a salad and the hostess usually provides beverages, bread and dessert. If you would like to introduce a friend to UWA, please invite them to attend as your guest. It's a fun way to meet with friends and relax.
INTERNATIONAL DINERS
For those who have not participated in International Diners before: A host chooses a month and decides upon a cuisine theme. The host contacts all International Diners who have indicated that they plan to attend. Based on the response, the host plans a meal, and all participants will get a recipe to prepare. Participants are asked to keep a monetary total of what they spend to prepare their dish. During the dinner, all totals are added together, and an average sum is assigned to each person. Thus, a person who prepared an inexpensive dish will likely end up paying some money, and those who prepared an expensive dish will likely get some money back. It is a fun way to collect some great recipes and the dinners are a feast
Spanish cuisine was featured at the January UWA International dinner. The dinner was at Barbara Day's home on Saturday evening, January 14, 2006. We hear the menu included Gambas con Salsa Piparrda, Mejillones Gayango, Albondigas "St Climent", Tortilla Espanola, Ensalada with Picadilla, Lombarda Rellena, Arroz con Pollo, Pesti–os al Anis and wines from Espana. Jim and Barbara would like to thank the diners who came and fixed those wonderful dishes. Good food and good company, what more can you ask for?
SKI/WALK GROUP
Ski Tuesdays and Fridays
It's staying so dark in the mornings. If, at 10 AM on Tuesdays or Fridays, it is above zero according to the 844 time and temperature telephone number, we will meet for skiing at 11:00 AM at Ballaine Lake parking lot. We will set off about 5-7 minutes after the hour with whoever is present and ski for 45-60 minutes on fairly flat trails. Do not worry about your skill level: we can accommodate all! If it is below zero when we call, we will meet instead at the Big Dipper for walking.
Walkers meet on Thursdays
On Thursdays walkers will meet at the Big Dipper (no matter what the temperature) at 11:00 AM.
Give Elizabeth a call if you have questions: 474-4725. Or, you may email her
at boxshapland@alaska.net.
BOOK GROUP
Judie Triplehorn regretfully announces that in January 2006 the book group will be disbanded due to sparse attendance.

UWA SCHOLARSHIPS
Six female students were selected to receive scholarships for the spring 2006 semester. More information will be provided on each applicant in the February newsletter. Barbara Day, co-chair of the scholarship committee, would like to thank co-chair Jane Bechtel for receiving and printing all the applications and Elizabeth Shapland for helping review the applications.
