SALAD LUNCHEON
The Salad Luncheon group meets once a month at a member's home. The hostess
chooses the date. We each bring a salad and the hostess usually provides beverages,
bread and dessert. If you would like to introduce a friend to UWA, please invite
them to attend as your guest. It's a fun way to meet with friends and relax.
Cynthia Dorman (457-4428) and Helen Howard (488-2314) are coordinating for
the group.
Cynthia Dorman hosted the November luncheon. Oh, that pumpkin cheesecake was
delicious! Thank you, Cynthia, for a wonderful winter afternoon.
Grace Moore will host this month’s salad luncheon at noon on Dec. 11
at her home, 510 Aquila Street. Please RSVP to 457-3000 if you plan to attend.
Grace provided these directions: Take Farmers Loop Road to Skyline Drive. Go
up Skyline 1.25 miles. On your right will be a caution sign indicating
a sharp curve ahead. Just after you see the sign, turn LEFT onto Aquila
Street. Just after the mailboxes on your RIGHT is my drive. You may go
up the drive, where parking is limited, or park on the RIGHT side of the street.
(Do not park on the opposite side, as a werewolf may attack your vehicle!!!).
Here’s hoping all come for a Jolly Good Time!
Salad Luncheon hostess are needed for the remainder of the winter season. Call
Cynthia Dorman now at 457-4428 to have the best choice of those months.
UWA KID’S GROUP
A mom’s and kid’s group is being planned for those interested in
more children’s activities. Please contact Alexis Runstadler if interested
at 452-1044 or <mailto:acrunstadler@yahoo.com>acrunstadler@yahoo.com
.
SKI/WALK GROUP
Group members are scheduled to meet at the Ballaine Lake parking lot at 10:30
AM on Tuesday and Friday. At the moment, the trails are not good and haven't
been groomed, so skiing is put on hold until we get some new snow. Because
turn out has been low, Cynthia suggests “Perhaps anyone interested should
get in touch with me to see what is happening. Until then THINK SNOW.”
If anyone is interested in walking on the indoor track at the Big
Dipper Ice Arena, give Cynthia Dorman a call (457-4428) and she'll meet you
there. There is currently no user fee.
HOW ABOUT A GAME NIGHT?
Here’s a suggestion from Laura Walsh: “I am interested in hosting
either a one-time event or a group if people are interested - games for grownups.
I would include things like Blokus, Set, Scrabble, Apples and Oranges, and
lots of others. My husband isn't interested in games, but I would enjoy playing
them every once in a while.”
All those who are interested should contact Laura Lynn Walsh at 374-8084 or
email lwalsh@acsalaska.net.
GOT YOUR RECEIPTS FROM THE 2006 RECYCLE SALE and the UWA HOLIDAY BAZAAR?
Any member with receipts for either the October Recycle Sale or the Holiday
Bazaar who wishes to be reimbursed, please fill out the reimbursement form
(below) and send with receipts to UWA, P.O. Box 81776, Fairbanks, AK 99708-1776.
INTERNATIONAL DINERS
For those who have not participated in International Diners before: A host
chooses a month and decides upon a cuisine theme. The host contacts all International
Diners who have indicated that they plan to attend. Based on the response,
the host plans a meal, and all participants will get a recipe to prepare. Participants
are asked to keep a monetary total of what they spend to prepare their
dish. During the dinner, all totals are added together, and an average sum
is assigned to each person. Thus, a person who prepared an inexpensive dish
will likely end up paying some money, and those who prepared an expensive dish
will likely get some money back. It is a fun way to collect some great recipes
and the dinners are a feast.
In November the International Diners met at the Thai House Restaurant where
they ate a relaxing and delicious meal with enjoyable conversation.
This month the International Diners will meet at the home of Ruth and Hal Levey,
2790 Waldheim Road, on December 16th at 6 o’clock. “We would
like to serve ethnic holiday dishes from each family’s national origin.
Call Ruth at 458-7161 or email <mailto:rlevey4@gci.net>rlevey4@gci.net
to coordinate the menu. Ruth writes, “We live in Goldstream off of Jones
Road. I will supply directions when you call, and even send you a map! Does
anyone play Skittles or Take Two for after dinner fun? Or do you have a game
to share? If we start dinner at 6 maybe we would have time for one.”
The January international dinner will be hosted by Barbara Day and Jim Dixon
at 3114 Chinook Drive. On Saturday, January 20th you will hear "Karibu" as
Barbara and Jim welcome you into their home with selections from the African
continent. From South Africa to Morocco to Ethiopia you will enjoy dishes like
Maschii, Fricasse Le Chou, or Lasary Voatablia.
If you’re interested in an unique journey into African cuisine, arrange
to attend the January International Dinner by contacting Barbara at 479-4306
or via email at bdday@hotmail.com before Tuesday, January 16th.
BOOK GROUP
The holiday season is here and the Page-Turners book group will meet for dinner
at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 12 at the Wolf Run restaurant off University Avenue.
Bring a book you have read and enjoyed to exchange for a book recommended by
another reader.
Our book selection for January will be Running with Scissors, a nonfiction
book about growing up with a neurotic psychiatrist for a parent. The
Kite Runner has been selected for February. For more information, call Mariclare
(Mary) Langan at 479-2332.
NEW MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY
The new UWA Membership Directory was available at the Holiday Bazaar. Many of
our members picked up their copy.
We have 72 members at the moment. This includes a few past members we believe
still wish to continue membership but they either haven't paid the $15 renewal
fee or haven’t sent in their Membership Application form. If you have not
sent in the form, please do so. These are useful in case you wish to change your
choice of groups for participation. Applications can be downloaded from <www.uaf.edu/uwa/>www.uaf.edu/uwa/
As always, if any members have friends who would like to join UWA, please let
vice president – Membership, Helen Howard know.
UWA ACTIVITY GROUPS
One of UWA’s most popular groups, the Salad Luncheons, needs a coordinator.
Fifteen people have signed to participate in Salad Luncheons. This group plans
to meet monthly, and coordination is not hard.
Another popular activity Group, the Scholarship Application Readers also needs
a coordinator. Please contact UWA president, Rita Osborne, (479-4535) if you
can head this group.
