SKI/WALK GROUP
Soon there will be snow on the ground. If you are interested in joining the walking/ski group, please contact Elizabeth at boxshapland@alaska.net. We will try to work out a schedule to suit the group, probably with two days for skiing and one or two for walking (at the Big Dipper once it gets slippery outside), but you can participate as little or as much as you like. If you signed up at the membership tea, Elizabeth will be contacting you in the middle of October.

SALAD LUNCHEON
The Salad Lunch group meets once a month at a member's home. The hostess chooses the date. We each bring a salad and the hostess usually provides beverages, bread and dessert. If you would like to introduce a friend to UWA, please invite them to attend as your guest. It's a fun way to meet with friends and relax.

On October 19th, Grace Moore will host the next Salad Luncheon at her home at 510 Aquila Street. Please call Grace at 457-3000 for directions. Her driveway is sometimes icy on the blacktop. If you have a 4 wheel drive vehicle, you can park at the top of the drive. If you don't, its best to park on the street and walk up on the side of her drive where there is a bit of snow for traction.

We are so fortunate to have Cora Cook as our hostess for the November 17 luncheon. On December 19, Elizabeth Shapland will host the holiday season luncheon.

THANK YOU TO ALL WHO ATTENDED THE FALL TEA
The Fall Welcome Tea was held on a sunny September Sunday at the UAF president's home. Several new residents came to the tea and a few women attended who are established members of the Fairbanks community although new to UWA. Many thanks to Patty Hamilton, our gracious hostess. And to Helen Howard and Jane Reilly who worked those diverse flower stems, leafy twigs, and sprays of fall berries into a great floral arrangement.

INTERNATIONAL DINERS
The first meeting of the International Diners will be held on October 22nd at 7 PM in the home of Alan and Barbara Braley. It will be an organizational meeting for the upcoming membership year. Anyone interested in participating in International Diners should attend. The theme is Octoberfest and the Braley's will supply the bratwurst and beer. Guests are asked to bring a salad, desert, or appetizer. Please contact Barbara if you plan to come. Her phone number is 457-8957 and her email address is bbraley@acsalaska.net.

KUAC VOLUNTEERS
Volunteers from UWA are needed to answer phones on Wednesday, October 19th from 7-9 PM. during the fall pledge drive for KUAC. In previous years, this event has been a fun night of lively conversation and good food (the food is donated so you never know...) We are scheduled to be at the studio by 6:45, at the latest, for orientation. If you are interested in doing this, please call Barbara Braley at 457-8957 or send an email to bbraley@acsalaska.net.

UWA HOLIDAY BAZAAR
The vendor table lottery for the Holiday Bazaar was held on September 29 thanks to the efforts of Elizabeth Shapland, Jane Bechtel, Floss Caskey, Rita Osborne, Georgene Nielsen, Lorraine Phillips, Ginny Kawasaki and Jane Reilly. A big thanks to Patty Hamilton for the use of the Schaible house for our meeting space.

Much work needs to be done to hold the Bazaar, scheduled for November 5 & 6. Please reserve those dates since we need all of our member's participation.

As she has done for UWA for several years, Ginny Kawasaki is coordinating the bazaar volunteers. Call Ginny at 456-5192 to volunteer your help. We have also been keeping Ginny busy with the UWA holiday bazaar message number, 456-4009.

UWA SCHOLARSHIPS
UWA is accepting applications for spring 2006 scholarships. The application deadline is October 31, 2005. Our web site is in the process of being updated to reflect this information. If any member knows of a woman undergraduate who might qualify for this scholarship, please mention our web site to her. Jane Bechtel and Barbara Day will co-chair the scholarship committee.

BOOK GROUP
Please help us choose books for the new year which YOU will enjoy reading and talking about. Send title and author suggestions to Elizabeth at boxshapland@alaska.net. We hope to discuss next year's choices at the November book discussion meeting.

The UWA book group will meet Monday, November 14 from 5:30 to 7:00 PM in the conference room at Noel Wien Library to discuss Cruelest Miles: the heroic story of dogs and men in a race against an epidemic by Gay and Laney Salisbury. Food is permitted in the conference room, and our discussions are very informal. Please join us!

For the December 12th meeting we have selected Year of Miss Agnes by Kirkpatrick Hill. For more information contact Judie Triplehorn at gilibrary@gi.alaska.edu. Alternately, you can fax Judie at 474-6790 (Attn. Judie Triplehorn) or by mail at P. O. Box 80826, Fairbanks
