UNIVERSITY WOMENS’ ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER May, 2005
P.O. BOX 81776 FAIRBANKS, ALASKA 99708www.uaf.edu”uwa

The Annual Meeting of the University Women’s Association was held at the
home of Uma Bhatt on Sunday May 1. Those present enjoyed an interesting
presentation given by Lew Shapiro on the history and influence of Cuban
music. Everyone enjoyed the delicious finger foods. Our president Rita
Osborne opened the business meeting with thanks to the outgoing board
members, a report on the activities of the last year, and a forward look to
what is in the offing for the months ahead. There were brief reports from
the secretary, and the treasurer.
The Board has recommended that scholarships in the amount of $3,500 be
awarded in the fall of 2005 and in the spring of 2006. Grants totaling
$1000 were made to UAF groups: Summer Arts Festival $250, UAF Museum of the
North docent program $250, KUAC $250, Bunnell House Children’s Center $250.
Bylaw changes were approved. Officers for the next year were nominated and
approved as follows: President: Rita Osborne, VP Service: Barbara Braley,
Secretary: Helen Howard, Treasurer: Barbara Day, Board Member at large: Ruth
Levey. The offices of VP Social, VP Membership, and VP Communications, are
yet to be filled. The following appointments/project chairs were made:
Newsletter Editor Georgene Nielsen, Phone Tree Ginny Kawasaki, Recycle sale
Georgene Nielsen and Rita Osborne, International Diners Barbara Braley,
Salad Lunch Floss Caskey, All Books Considered Judi Triplehorn, Walk/Ski
Group Elizabeth Shapland, Web Design Uma Bhatt. Volunteers are needed to
manage the Holiday Bazaar, and serve as the Scholarship chair. Nancy
Klammer and Irene Peyton were recognized for their service to the
association and given a parting gift. They are moving this summer.

Salad Lunch will be held at Irene Peyton’s home on Wednesday May 11th at
noon. Call Irene for directions and to RSVP, 479-2864 or send her an
e-mail at ipeyton@ascalaska.net.

International Diners: We would like to thank the Osborne's for the jolly
good time we had at the Patrick O'Brian dinner in April. There were such
delicacies as bashed neeps, lobscouse and plum duff. Arg, it was good.
Our next scheduled gathering will be at the Braley's for a traditional 4th
of July barbecue on Sunday, July 3rd. Yes, on the third; that way we can all
partake in other 4th of July activities in our community. The Braley's will
provide bratwurst (possibly salmon), beverages and have 2 grills going if
you have something to bring. Otherwise, it's a potluck. Salads, desserts or
appetizers would be great. If you're coming, please call or email Barbara at
457-8957 or bbraley@gci.net. <mailto:bbraley@gci.net. > If anyone
feels inspired to have a dinner in May or June, please contact Barbara about
that as well!

We are losing two of our dearest members both have sent notes to be included
in the newsletter.

“It makes me sad to bid "farewell" to my friends in UWA...you've all helped
to make my four years in Fairbanks a lot of fun! Thanks for taking me into
the fold. Tim is retired as of May 1. Thirty years of night call was
enough for him! We hope to move in July...will be spending summers at our
cottage on an island in Rainy Lake, Ontario...spring and fall at our little
ranch in the Nebraska Sandhills....in the winter we'll travel to warmer
climes. I'll keep in touch so you'll have an address to drop a line or an
e-mail if you're ever passing through. Thanks to all for the going away
gift of a lovely Barbara LaVallee tile...reminds me of berry picking with my
walk/ski buddies! “

“We really are leaving! Looking forward to seeing more of our two
families there in Washington and reluctantly saying goodbye to people
and places that have made up our lives since 1962.
Faculty Wives made my early days in Fairbanks easier to manage, with
a new baby and a new community. We had baby sitting exchanges, a food
cooperative, special holiday events and monthly coffee klatches. We knew
most other people on campus. The International Diners' Group
came along about ten years later. It wasn't long before Cam Carlson
had us doing two recycle sales every year and then the fund raising
Holiday Bazaar which provided funds for our scholarships, and we
became the University Women's Association.
UWA has continued to be the place to make new friends and to help
other new arrivals to be involved. Sunday's annual meeting at Uma's
gave me a chance to say goodbye. Your gift of the Forget-me-not tile
by Nancy Hausle Johnson is a gorgeous remembrance to have to remind me of
the many friends who have been part of my life: some for a few years, and
some for 43 years. Thank you for fun days and for fond memories to warm me
as we start our new challenge.
