UWA HOLIDAY BAZAAR
We had many new vendors participating in this year's Bazaar. Thank you to UWA
members who encouraged friends and family to attend both days. A big thanks
for all the Bazaar volunteers for continuing to make the UWA Holiday Bazaar
the best of the best! We had many wonderful compliments and we are getting
requests from friends of friends to be on the vendor mailing list for the
November 4 & 5, 2006 bazaar.
A special thanks to the planning committee who made it happen: Jane Bechtel,
Floss Caskey, Barbara Day,
Helen Howard, Ginny Kawasaki, Mary Keskinen, Georgene Nielsen, Rita Osborne,
Jane Reilly, Lorraine Phillips, Elizabeth Shapland and Janet Taylor.
We are now forming the 2006 committee. If you would like to participate, please contact Rita at rfrso@uaf.edu .
SALAD LUNCHEON
The Salad Lunch group meets once a month at a member's home. The hostess chooses
the date. We each bring a salad and the hostess usually provides beverages,
bread and dessert. If you would like to introduce a friend to UWA, please
invite them to attend as your guest. It's a fun way to meet with friends
and relax. For more information call Floss Caskey at 457-4424.
Our compliments and our thanks to Cora Cook who hosted the Salad Luncheon on November 17th. The eight guests enjoyed an assortment of salads, and pizza as well as biscotti for dessert. There was lively conversation and everyone looked forward to the approaching Thanksgiving Day .
Elizabeth Shapland will host the holiday season luncheon on December 19, at 725 Cardinal Court, off Ballaine Road. Please call 474-4725 to RSVP and to receive directions.
BOOK GROUP
In December we have traditionally read a short "children's" book, met at a restaurant, and exchanged used books as gifts ("selected" by the recipient through the wrapping!). It's a fun meeting and we hope you will join us. This month the group will meet Monday, December 12th. Call Elizabeth (474-4725) for the location.
Judie Triplehorn regretfully announces that in January 2006 the book group will be disbanded due to sparse attendance.
INTERNATIONAL DINERS
For those who have not participated in International Diners before: A host
chooses a month and decides upon a cuisine theme. The host contacts all International
Diners who have indicated that they plan to attend. Based on the response,
the host plans a meal, and all participants will get a recipe to prepare.
Participants are asked to keep a monetary total of what they spend to prepare
their dish. During the dinner, all totals are added together, and an average
sum is assigned to each person. Thus, a person who prepared an inexpensive
dish will likely end up paying some money, and those who prepared an expensive
dish will likely get some money back. It is a fun way to collect some great
recipes and the dinners are a feast
The International Diners have made plans for dinners beginning in January 2006. However, if anyone is interested in hosting for December 2005, please contact Barbara Braley at 457-8957 or send an email to bbraley@acsalaska.net
Spanish cuisine will be featured at the January UWA International dinner. The dinner will be at Barbara Day's home on Saturday evening, January 14, 2006. If you would like to participate, please contact Barbara Day via email at bdday@hotmail.com or by telephone at 479-4306.
SKI/WALK GROUP
revised times for walking and skiing
It's staying so dark in the mornings that we need to shift our time for skiing
(assuming it ever warms up enough to allow us wimps to get out there!). If,
at 10 AM on Tuesdays or Fridays, it is above zero according to the 844 time
and temperature telephone number, we will meet for skiing at 11:00 AM at Ballaine
Lake parking lot . If it is below that temperature, we will meet instead at
the Big Dipper for walking.
On days when the temperature permits skiing, we will continue to set off about 5-7 minutes after the hour with whoever is present and ski for 45-60 minutes on fairly flat trails. Do not worry about your skill level: we can accommodate all!
On Thursdays walkers will meet at the Big Dipper (no matter what the temperature) at 11:00 AM. We hope this time change will make for a more pleasant walk as we will hear less noise from the hockey rink below us. Give Elizabeth a call if you have questions: 474-4725. Or, you may email her at boxshapland@alaska.net.
UWA SCHOLARSHIPS
UWA has received applications for spring 2006 scholarships. As of November
23rd only one scholarship reader has been able to read the Spring 2006 scholarship
applications. Barbara Day, co-chair of the scholarship committee, has decided
to extend the review deadline to Friday evening, December 9th.
Barbara requests that any UWA member who would like to review the scholarships, please, do so. The applications are in a grey box located in the Keith Mather Library on the second floor of the IARC building on the UAF's West Ridge. Just ask the receptionist for the UWA Scholarship Application box. Barbara intends to select the scholarship winners on Sunday, December 11th.
NEW UWA MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY
A big round of applause to Barbara Day, who took on the task of updating and
publishing the new membership directory. Those directories that were not
picked up at the Holiday Bazaar have been mailed out to the membership.
Below are additions and modifications to the directory received after the October 14th deadline. They are included in this month's newsletter so the names can be added to your copy of the directory.
