>From Cynthia Dorman.
New Year's Eve was celebrated at the IARC building. Lots of good food kept
us busy while we waited for the fireworks to begin. The family oriented
event allowed all ages to participate – about 50 people in all. Our thanks
go to Colleen Jones who had the forethought to reserve the room well in
advance. Special thanks to Judie Triplehorn who was our door person. She
did a wonderful job, letting us in to set up the room, and then staying by
the door to let in the all the rest of the party goers. She even arranged
for carts so that we didn't have to carry all the boxes to the 5th floor. We
are very grateful to everyone at IARC. Helen Howard and Floss Caskey were
great to work with and made the evening possible. A lot of thinking and
planning and phone calls and rethinking made everything work. They even
made it fun to shop for the supplies. Our thanks to all of you who pitched
in, helped to get things underway, and cleaned up and put everything away
when the party ended. Hope we can enjoy New Year's in the same way next
year.

UWA International Diners:
With no host or co-host volunteering for our January gathering, we will be
meeting at Gambardella's Pasta Bella (706 2nd Ave.) on January 17th at 7:00
for Italian food. The cost will be $15.00 per person. They
will offer their lasagna (named "The Mother of all Lasagnas" by the
Seattle
Times), eggplant parmgiana, and a salad entree (yet to be determined). It
will be a full meal with drinks and desserts being extra. Please contact
Barbara Braley by January 12th if you plan to attend this dinner; either
call 457-8957 or send an email to bbraley@gci.net. Sorry, no recipes will be
given out with this meal.
On the subject of hosting and co-hosting, we need volunteers to come
forward. There are no cohosts for February with Floss Caskey as host, or in
March with Nancy Klammer as host, or April with Nicole Molders as host. We
need both a host and co-host for May, July, or August. We don't usually
meet in September, but we could. Please contact Barbara Braley if you can
help.
International Diners is a group that meets monthly for a dinner. The hostess
and co-hostess decide on a theme and prepare menus for those who have
indicted interest in attending the dinner. Each person keeps a record of
their expenses and the total costs are pro-rated among those who attend.
Each participant should try to host or co-host during the year. The hosts
provide the beverages, table service and name tags. In the past, the
evening's recipes were made available and shared among the guests. With the
use of email, this could be done easily and is a wonderful reward for
participating in the dinner.
The UWA book group has an exciting year planned. They meet on the second
Monday of each month in the conference room at Noel Wien Public Library.
The schedule for this year is:
Jan. 12 The Group by Mary McCarthy
Feb. 9 Seabiscuit: An American Legend by Laura Hillenbrand
Mar. 8 The DaVinci Code: A Novel by Dan Brown
Apr. 12 Kitchen Confidential: Adventure in the Culinary Underbelly by
Anthony Bourdain
May 10 Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd
June 14 The Wailing Wind by Tony Hillerman
A group hosting a luncheon for Lisa Murkowski in April asked us to invite
all UWA members. It will be held April 14 at 11:30 am. The site does not
seem to have been decided yet. If you have any questions, please feel free
to call Marguerita Gilbertson at 451-4455.
