August is a busy month with the summer activities winding down, vacations
and all that. However, it is time to look ahead to another good year for
UWA. We need to remember at this time that UWA is a charitable organization
as well as a social one. We raise money for scholarships given to deserving
women students at UAF, and support several university based institutions.
UWA holds a very popular recycle sale, and sponsors the Holiday Bazaar in
November. Members get together for lunches and for international diners
once a month. And, of course, we welcome newcomers to Fairbanks and try to
help them get through their first Arctic winter with a walking- skiing
group, a book group, the possibility of a gathering around quilting or
playing Bridge.
This newsletter is the first of the school year. The editor just wants to
remind you all that it is time to join up and send your dues to Cynthia
Dorman, our membership chair. You can find the membership form on the
website www.uaf.edu/”uwa. Or call her at 457-4428 and she will send one
to
you. Send completed forms with $15 to Cynthia at PO Box 81775, Fairbanks
99708. The membership book will be put out in the late fall. Lets all be
in it!
The first event in September is the Welcome Tea which will be held September
12th, Sunday from 2 to 4. Nancy Klammer will be sending out invitations.
If you have questions or want to help, please contact Nancy at
tklammer@gci.net or 457-4647. You are welcome to bring a friend when you
come. .
International Diners: The diners group is on hiatus until after the fall tea
so we can begin again with new members and new energy. We will next meet on
October 23rd at the home of Barbara and Alan Braley for an Octoberfest. More
information will be provided as we get closer to that date.
Fall Contradance: University Women's Association is again sponsoring a free
contra dance at the Wood Center Ballroom on September 18th from 8pm - 11pm.
Dance instruction will be provided by caller Lynn Basham with live music by
Celtic Confusion. The wonderful thing about contra dance is that if you can
walk, you can contra dance. Every dance is taught and practiced before the
music starts. Even then, the caller will remind you of the next move
throughout the dance. It's a great way to achieve our purpose as stated in
Article II: "UWA shall provide a means of welcoming new members and
promoting friendship and understanding among the various branches of the
University". Come give it a try.
Lorraine needs helpers for first mail out for the Holiday Bazaar on Monday
August 30. Please call Lorraine Phillips at 479-6098 or send an e-mail to
lorry@acsalaska.net if you would be able to help!! Lorraine will also be
needing help with the lottery selection of vendors Sept 25 especially if you
have had experience with the process in the past.
The UWA Board will meet on August 20th at 1:30 at the Noel Wien Library.
The meeting will be held in the conference room next to the auditorium. Any
interested members are welcome to attend.
And that is all the news at this time!
