UNIVERSITY WOMEN’S ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER 2003
P.O. Box 81776 Fairbanks, Alaska 99708 www.uaf.edu”uwa

35TH ANNUAL UWA HOLIDAY BAZAAR was held on November 1-2, 2003, the
first weekend in November as per tradition. The weather was not
friendly with freezing rain and temperatures hovering around 32F, but
vendors filled all the tables on Saturday and all but two on
Sunday. The crowds were not as large as usual but most vendors did
quite well. A big thanks goes to bazaar chair Jane Bechtel, who dealt
daily with phone calls and applications since August. There was a
committee of UWA members supporting Jane, and they deserve a big thanks
also (Janet Taylor- for organizing the porters and music, Barbara
Braley-for getting downtown early enough that our banner was hanging
over the Cushman Street bridge, Barbara Day-for taking care of all the
complicated accounting, Nancy Klammer-for sliding down Chena Ridge
road early Sunday to make sure we had the door prize event, Heather
Robertson-for setting up wonderful publicity, Irene Peyton, Ruth
Levey and Ginny Kawasaki for organizing the UWA volunteers, Elizabeth
Shapland-for her invaluable help with many aspects of the event, Helen
Howard and Colleen Jones). Also Uma Bhatt, Margaret Colony, Barb Travis, and
Rita Osborne are thanked for helping with a variety of bazaar tasks. Irene,
Ginny and Ruth want to send special thanks to those members who came through
sleet and ice to volunteer at the Bazaar and put in extra time to help out
because the slipping and sliding kept some wise folks off the roads.

>From Barbara Day:
We survived the Holiday Bazaar for another year even with the yucky weather.
By the way, we did experience a 4.2 earthquake around 10:30am on Sunday.
The epicenter was 57 miles south of Fairbanks. It was probably another
aftershock of the big one. (Remembering that the big one happened during
last year’s bazaar,is there something going on here?)
I am going to 'run away' in two weeks but will return. If anyone has
receipts and would like to be reimbursed, please mail them to the UWA post
office box. As long as I receive them before or on Monday, November 17, I
will be able to send you a refund check. Both Date-Line Copier and the
Fairbanks Daily News-Miner will be sending me a bill eventually. I will be
back in town the week of December 8.
Hopefully, I will be able to tell you how we did at the bazaar by the first
of January.

INTERNATIONAL DINERS: Annette & Jeff Freymueller will host November 15, with
the theme being Chinese. Please call 479-3550 or e-mail
alaskapt@hotmail.com to RSVP. Please respond by November 7. The last
Chinese Dinner the Freymueller's hosted was a huge success (approx. 27
people). Annette writes; “We have a new, very large house, so we can
accommodate LOTS of people”.

For those who have not participated in International Diners before:
A host chooses a month and decides upon a “cuisine theme.” The host contacts
all international diners who have indicated that they plan to attend. Based
on the response, the host plans a meal, and all participants will get a
recipe to prepare. Participants are asked to keep a monetary total on what
they spend to prepare their dish. During the dinner, all totals are added
together, and an average sum is assigned to each person. Thus, a person who
prepared an “inexpensive” dish will likely end up paying some money, and
those who prepared an “expensive” dish will likely get some money back.
Dinners in the past have averaged $10-15.

SALAD LUNCH Barbara Braley will host the salad lunch at her house on
November 21. Please call her to RSVP and get directions. Her phone number
is 457-8957. Her e-mail is bbraley@gci.net.
