CELEBRATING OUR 50th by Irene Peyton
We meandered through the years with eleven former presidents, and 30
members and guests, on Sunday, May 4 at Desserts First, enjoying tea
and scones, plus assorted other goodies. Presidents attending were:
>>52-53 Ellen Cashen
>>57-58 Bobbie Rice
>>72-73 Jane Krauss
>>81-81 Gretchen Murphy
>>88-89 Lorraine Phillips
>>90-91 Janet Taylor
>>91-92 Louise Anderl
>>92-93 Elizabeth Shapland
>>96-97 Annette Freymueller
>>00-01 Irene Peyton
and current president Uma Bhatt.
70-71 Margaret Bennett, 74-75 Sandy Svenningson,76-77 Lucy McCarthy,
93-94 Nancy Boyer, 94-95 Linda Porter and 97-00 Leslie (Schmitt)
O'Connor also still live in town but were unable to be with us.
Former members who live out of town were contacted, and Elizabeth
Shapland has put it all together in a "history of our members". She
will accept additions and the document will be available for $5.00.
(if you paid for it today, it was only $3:00).

President Uma Bhatt introduced Debra Damron, Director, University
Relations, who represented Chancellor Lind. Anne Foster, Rasmussen
Archivist, also congratulated the group, and asked for details
concerning activities since 1986. Each president reported the
highlights of the years that she served in office. We were honored
to have Ellen Cashen, the first chairman of Faculty Wives in 1953
with us, and Bobbie Rice who has been a member continuously since
1953.

On display was a patchwork wall hanging that was made for Enid
Cutler, wife of former chancellor Howard Cutler. Our records do not
Identify the women who made this quilt. If you can help with this,
please let Irene know at ipeyton@eagle.ptialaska.net.

President Bhatt announced that we were saying farewell to Carol
Woodall, who is moving to Klamath Falls, and to Leslie O'Connor, who has
taken a job in Anchorage.

The 50th anniversary Committee is to be congratulated: Barbara Day,
Irene Peyton, Elizabeth Shapland and Carol Woodall.

INTERNATIONAL DINERS: The April dinner was held at Nicole Molder’s home.
After braving the springtime mud, the diners were treated to an elegant
meal of asparagus soup, potato pancakes, poached salmon, strawberries in
cream, and streusel kuchen. The beverages of wine with dinner and hot
chocolate and coffee served after were an added treat. The ambiance of a
lovely table setting and good conversation made it a very pleasurable
evening. Thank you, Nicole.
A Norwegian Dinner will be held on Saturday, May 10 at 7 p.m. in the
home of Irene Peyton (off Ballaine Rd.) and the hostess will be Rita
Osborne.
A Picnic on the Porch will be held on Saturday June 28 at 7 p.m. at the home
of Irene Peyton. Ruth Levey and Irene will host.

SALAD LUNCH: The salad lunch for May will be held on Thurs. the 22 at noon
at Rita Osborne’s house, 1107 Pika Rd. Please RSVP and to get directions at
479-4535, or e-mail at osborne@gvea.net
Judy Williams hosted the group at her home on April 16. Thank you so very
much Judy.

Carol Woodall has sent us the following letter. She will be missed.
Dear friends, WHAT IS UWA?
As many of you have already heard, Dave and I will be departing Fairbanks
this summer for the sunny eastern slopes of the Oregon Cascades. Dave will
be taking a new position in Klamath Falls as Provost of the Oregon Institute
of Technology. I suppose I will
become a "provostess". That should be interesting. I want to thank
you all for making my time in Fairbanks so much more interesting and
enjoyable than it would have been without you. If not for all the salad
lunches and international dinners, I would be departing with a leaner,
hungrier look. UWA is still the chief protective blanket saving many a new
Fairbanks woman from a cold, depressive anonymity. Although many of you
who came from elsewhere now feel perfectly at home in this "farthest north"
city, you can probably think back to a time when the frozen tundra appeared
less welcoming. Perhaps UWA members were important factors in your
adjustment to Fairbanks, as you have been in mine. Perhaps you too first
felt the warmth
of the Arctic though this group. Our organization is filled to overflowing
with fascinating, cosmopolitan, and talented womanpower. And although I
will no longer be able to play a role in its important mission, I encourage
you all to remember the vital contributions
UWA continues to make to the community and to make certain it remains
healthy and strong.
I will miss you all a great deal. If anyone cares about my loneliness in a
new town, you could help out by stopping in Klamath on some future trip to
the outside. When we are settled I will send directions back this way to
assist you in finding me. Meanwhile, it has been an honor serving as your
Membership VP. Thanks a million.
Hasta manana, Carol Woodall
