UNIVERSITY WOMEN'S ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER MARCH 2003
P.O. BOX 81776, Fairbanks, Alaska 99788 www.uaf.edu/~uwa

The SPRING RECYCLE SALE There will be Saturday, April 5 from 12 to 2:30. We
will need help from 7:30 to 5:30 in the Wood Center organized by Beth Olson.
Please contact to Beth at 452-0589 to volunteer. Seller information will be
available one month before the sale at the Wood Center.

The spring meeting will be at Desserts First -- May 4th. The hours are 2
to 4 p.m. Carol Woodall has been organizing the particulars. I have the
following information from a current email she sent. Finger foods --
including dessert items and tea sandwiches -- will be on the menu, as well
as drinks (coffee, tea, etc.). The cost will be $10 per person for an
elegant afternoon outing. Michaela (proprietor of Desserts First) wanted
an estimated number of attendees. I told her 25. Elizabeth and Irene have
generously agreed to put together the program -- which will celebrate the
50th anniversary of UWA.

UWA is 50 Years Old This Year! In preparation for our spring celebration of
our anniversary, I want to collect some details of the fun and interesting
(or wild or sad or frustrating!) things UWA women have done in those five
decades. Please take a few minutes to record for each decade a few of the
things you were doing at the time (work, play, family activities, whatever).
I plan to organize these by decade so please give at least rough dates for
events/activities. Please send to me by mail or e-mail: Elizabeth Shapland,
725 Cardinal Ct. Fbks, 99709, ffmab@uaf.edu
Thanks for helping out!

KUAC PHONE VOLUNTEERS: UWA members will be answering phones for KUAC's fund
raising on Thursday, March 13th from 6:30 - 8:30 during the Carole King
Special. Volunteers should arrive at least 15 minutes early to receive
orientation as to their duties. Food is donated by local restaurants and the
conversation is always lively. Please call or email Barbara Braley by March
15th if you're interested in helping out:
457-8957 or bbraley@gci.net.

The February INTERNATIONAL DINNER was hosted by Barbara and Alan Braley on
the 1st of March. Twelve hungry people feasted on Cajun food like crab
cakes, chicken etouffee, and black eyed peas. Barbara and Adam had their
house decorated in a Mardi Gras theme.

The NEXT INTERNATIONAL DINERS will be meeting at Seoul Gate Restaurant on
March 22 at 7:00. Seoul Gate offers Korean food which will be served family
style. They also offer free Karaoke (does anyone ever pay for that?) The
cost for dinner will be around $12.00 per person. Please call or email
Barbara Braley by March 15th if you're interested in joining us for dinner:
457-8957 or bbraley@gci.net.

The FEBRUARY SALAD LUNCH was be held at Nancy Klammer's home. Nothing marks
the month of February more clearly then a festive Valentine luncheon. Thank
you, thank you to Nancy Klammer for hosting such a lovely affair! AND thank
you ladies for the delicious salads. What a treat they were!

Cora Cook will host the MARCH SALAD LUNCH. More information will be
provided later. Please call her at 479-2487 to RSVP and get directions to
her home.

We are still looking for volunteers to host the May and June luncheons.

We all had a wonderful time at Jane Bechtel's for the CABIN FEVER
CELEBRATION. Pat DeRuyter told us about skijoring in Fairbanks and
introduced us to the skijoring equipment. The Alaska Skijoring and Pulk
Association can be found at http://www.sleddog.org/skijor or by phone at
457-5456. Teresa Thompson suggested volunteer opportunities in the
community through the United Way (www.unitedwaytv.com or 452-7211).
Elizabeth Shapland displayed some lovely quilts and told us how we can get
involved and make some of our own, for ourselves or others in need. The
Cabin Fever Quilters Association meets the 3rd Tuesday of every month at
7:15 at Monroe Catholic High School (come in the back door). Beginners
welcome. Come learn through helping with community service projects. For
info., call Elizabeth at 474-4725.

Join us for CROSS COUNTRY SKI any Friday at 10 AM and/or Tuesday at 1 PM.
If you want to ski, just show up at the Ballaine Lake parking lot along
Farmer's Loop at those times, and with luck you will find at least one other
person there ready to join you for a delightful ski. We will wait at the
lot until about ten minutes after the hour and then head out onto the
trails. Elizabeth 474-4725
