UNIVERSITY WOMEN'S ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER JANUARY 2003
P.O. BOX 81776, Fairbanks, Alaska 99708 www.uaf.edu/"uwa

It is our hope that everyone had a grand holiday and is ready for a very
happy and prosperous new year. Fairbanks started it off with an exciting
array of fireworks and UWA members were on hand to see them first hand.

Colleen Jones writes: New year's Eve brought together approximately fifty
University Women's Association members, families, and friends at the
International Arctic Research Center for an evening of potluck,
socialization and viewing of some spectacular fireworks. People of ages two
to ninety were in attendance to enjoy the warmth and fun of the evening
while the bravest were out in the cold watching the half hour of fireworks.
Thanks go to Allison York and her two daughters, Ellen and Julia, for
helping set up the evening. Thanks to all for helping clean and clear away
the night's remains. Once again - I think it was a great time enjoyed by
all.

I think our thanks go to you too, Colleen.

Nicole Molders writes: We had 27 applicants for scholarships. We proudly
gave away scholarships in total value of $5500. The seven successful
applicants were; Kelly McGuire ($1000), Heather Erickson ($1000), Ariana
Graf ($1000), Theresa Roark ($750), Jessica Warner ($750), Amanda Bent
($500), and Myrna Pokiak ($500). We notified the successful applicants and
encouraged the other applicants to reapply. We are currently revising the on
line application forms for easier handling by both the applicants and the
committee members. Suggestions are welcome.

UWA is grateful to Nicole and to those who helped her choose the scholarship
winners.

The UWA SALAD LUNCH will be held on January 22, Wednesday, at the home of
Cynthia Dorman. Please call her by January 20 for directions: 457-4428.

The INTERNATIONAL DINERS will dine on Saturday, January 25, at 6:30 p.m. (a
little earlier due to the massive seasonal darkness). Carol and Dave
Woodall will host a dinner of "Coyote Cuisine". Menu items will be selected
from creative and colorful dishes developed in recent years by southwestern
chefs of the U.S. Some will be spicy, and some will not (to suit a variety
of palates). Please RSVP to Carol no later than January 20 at 457-5435 or
at carol.woodall@att.net. Space is limited, so respond early.

If any members wish to submit classified ads for future newsletters please
