Romancing
the Stones...
A fall welcome for members,
new and renewing, will be held at the home of Lois and Marshal Lind on September
22, 2002 from 2 to 4 pm.
You are cordially invited to our annual "back to school" gathering.
This year we thought it would be fun if each of us came sporting (or just porting)
some item of jewelry or a treasure which has a special meaning: a grandmothers
brooch, a baby bracelet, a paper ring used at the wedding when the best man
forgot the real one, a diamond retrieved at the last moment from the garbage
disposal, an owl feather garnered by a toddler/explorer, or whatever appeals
to each of us. We hope to share a few stories, episodes, or mere flashes of
experience as we cut tundra trails while romancing the stones.
There will be, of course, delicious edibles to savor and plenty of time to meet
old and/or new friends. If you are new to Fairbanks, or just new to UWA, we
think you will find the Association to be a friendly, diverse, fun, informal
group. Please join us for this, our first gathering of the new academic year!
If you would like to attend but need transportation or directions, contact Carol
Woodall at 457-5435, or carol.woodall@att.net.
Octoberfest
welcome dinner!
Well be having the
kickoff October International Diners dinner on October 19 at 7:p.m. It
is to be at the home of Jane and Peter Bechtel, 433 Gold Mine Trail. Jane will
supply the brats, beer and strudel. She is asking those who come to bring an
appetizer, salad or vegetables. We wont be figuring the cost. To get to
Janes house take the Steese Expressway north to Gold Mine Trail. It is
the first road on your right past the Pipeline Overlook (Gold Rush mine is on
your right). Go about 1.4 miles and it is the third house on the right (tan)
and shares a driveway with another house. Please R.S.V.P. to Jane at 452-1302,
or bechtel@mosquitonet.com.
Salad lunch:
We are looking for hostesses for the UWA salad luncheons for September
December. Please call Floss Caskey if you would enjoy hosting a lunch. 457-4424
or by e-mail at cranbrry@ptialaska.net.
Whats been happening! Irene Peyton hosted a salad and wrap dinner
at her house on August 17th. The food was exciting, and the conversation too
good to leave until very late. Irene also hosted an intimate UWA salad lunch
on the 21st. It was at this lunch that the participants came up with the theme
for our welcoming gathering, romancing the stones.
Whats not happening! The fall recycle sale is on hold as we try to find
a place to hold it.
Scholarships and donations: Thank
you notes were received from the recipients of scholarships: Keiko Ino, Raena
Fites, Elizabeth S. Smart, and Kristine Niles. Gratitude was also expressed
for donations to UAF Bunnell House Early Childhood Lab School, The University
of Alaska Museum Education Department, and the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival.
KUAC also received a UWA donation. All letters will be available for viewing
at the welcoming tea at the Linds. Be sure to see the thank-you card sent
by the children at the Bunnell Lab School.
Christmas Bazaar: November 2nd and 3rd. The greatest Christmas
craft bazaar in Fairbanks is scheduled for November 2nd and 3rd in the Wood
Center at UAF. Be a part of it! Get an early start on your Christmas shopping.
The hours both days are 10-4. Help out by serving one or two shifts between
8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Jobs include checking in vendors, door watch, leading vendors
to their tables, coat room, manning the UWA/Bazaar information table and clean
up.
