UNIVERSITY WOMEN’S ASSOCIATION
VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES

UWA HOLIDAY BAZAAR
The University Women’s Association is a non-profit organization that raises money for twice yearly scholarship awards and for donations to community projects. Our main fund raiser is the annual UWA Holiday Bazaar at Wood Center on the UAF campus.  This year will be our 39th Annual Holiday Bazaar on November 3rd and 4th.
Each of the two days offers 100 vendor tables and provides a retail outlet for craftspeople who have limited opportunities to sell their products.  Merchandise is hand-crafted and locally made or exhibits artistic and/or creative modification of purchased or collected items.

UWA RECYCLE SALE
The UWA Recycle Sale occurs twice yearly, in both Spring and Fall. UWA members are currently putting together the Fall Recycle Sale scheduled for Saturday, September 22. The Recycle Sale is important to students, UAF personnel and our community. Our goal is to move gently used items off our garage shelves and out of the backs of our closets and get them back into use. The Fall Sale will feature a treasure trove of winter gear, small appliances, building supplies, household items, tools, children’s clothes, furniture, sports gear and craft supplies.  The Recycle Sale is good for our community and good for the planet.

SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE
The University Women's Association provides scholarships for undergraduate women at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Applications are reviewed March or April for the next academic year. Typically, the UWA gives away $500-$1500 scholarships to women based on academic excellence and financial need. These scholarships have at times made the difference between a woman graduating or not.

UWA FUN ACTIVITIES

INTERNATIONAL DINERS

International Diners is a fun way to collect some great recipes and the dinners are a feast. The participants are asked to choose a month they will host a meal and decide upon a cuisine theme. Those whose homes are unable accommodate a dinner party may partner with someone who can. Information regarding the host and the cuisine is then posted in the monthly UWA Newsletter. Those interested in attending contact the host and indicate if they are bringing a guest. The host plans a menu and all participants receive one dish to prepare. Each dinner offers an unique culinary experience with an extensive variety of dishes to savor.

SALAD LUNCHES
Many of the members of UWA are free during the week, so a monthly lunch at a member’s home where everyone brings a salad has been a good way to get together. The hostess sets the date and provides coffee and tea or other drink, some form of bread and a dessert.
Helen Howard, Coordinator

SKI/WALK GROUP
Depending upon the weather, members of this group get together to walk or ski, often meeting at Ballaine Lake. However, the coordinator for this group has moved out of State. If there are people interested in meeting regularly, they will be expected to choose a coordinator among them.

CREATIVE NEEDLERS
How are you creating?  Knitting?  CX-Stitching?  Quilting?  Crocheting?  Tatting?  Sewing?  Weaving?  Or, you name it.  It's alot more fun doing it together.  So....COME!  Bring your bag(s), boxes, machine, materials and get a couple hours in on your latest (or oldest) needling.  Share your talent, and work on your creation whiloe others show us the results (or beginnings) of their talents.  The scheduling of this is wide open at this point.  What works best for you?
Description by Cam Carlson. This is a new group, and needs a coordinator.

BOOK GROUP
Members meet monthly and choose which books to read and discuss.

BRIDGE PLAYERS
UWA used to have a Bridge Group, and Cora Cook would like to see it restarted. They would gather monthly in different people’s homes or find a pleasant space to use. If you would like to join or get further information, please contact Cora Cook at 479-2487. She does not use e-mail.

GAMES NIGHT
Games Night is an opportunity to get together with members of the group, their partners, and their friends to play board games, card games, and other two player or multi-player games.
Coordinated by Laura Lynn Walsh.

KIDS AND MOMS GROUP
We try to meet once a month at a local playground or at someone’s home for a couple of hours. Times vary depending on the ages of the children.
Coordinated by Alexis Runstadler.
