Female criminal justice students break barriers in law enforcement |
Move over, 007, there's a new Bond girl in town- but she's using her brains, not a bikini, to bring down the bad guys. UAF senior Damita Kaloostian was one of only 100 students nationwide selected for an FBI Honors Internship. Kaloostian, a criminal justice major from Mobile, Ala., will represent Alaska during the upcoming summer at FBI headquarters in Washington, D.C. She will spend three months working with agents at the bureau, exploring future career opportunities available through the FBI. Another UAF female justice student who's breaking new ground with opportunities for women in law enforcement is Sandra Deaton. Deaton, a senior from Beaver, Alaska, was selected by the state's juvenile probation office in Nome for a nine-month internship. The internship, the first of its kind for UAF justice students, gives Deaton field training opportunities with law enforcement officers and court officials. Record returns from Student Investment Fund benefit student scholarships |
After a record return rate of 67 percent from investments last year, student traders overseeing the University of Alaska Fairbanks Student Investment Fund really know how to take a bull market by the horns. But one of their recent investments is decidedly bearish- polar bearish, to be exact. The Nanook student traders voted to award $4,000 worth of scholarships from Student Investment Fund profits. Four $500 scholarships will fund National Merit Scholars. In addition, the $500 Michael L. Rice Scholarship will be given to graduate student Dmitry Kulmanovsky and the $500 Vonna K. Husby scholarship will go to junior Bryan Bernaldo. The fund is run by students in the UAF investment class. It started in 1991 with an initial investment pool of $100,000 from donations. In 1998, students raised that amount to $311,500. Contact: Associate Professor Mary Lindahl, School of Management, (907) 474-7253, or by e-mail: ffmrl@uaf.edu |

UAF justice students awarded scholarships in memory of slain police officers |
The Alaska Peace Officers Association has awarded three University of Alaska Fairbanks justice students scholarships in the name of police officers who lost their lives while on the job providing public safety in Alaska. Senior James Fischer, from Fairbanks, and senior Walter Evans, from King Salmon, Alaska, received 1999 APOA scholarships established in memory of Alaska State Troopers Skip Chevalier and Troy Duncan, who were killed in the line of duty. Freshman Karl Main from Kodiak, Alaska, received the APOA Memorial Scholarship, given in memory of Kevin Lamm, an officer with the Fairbanks Police Department who also died in the line of duty. Each student received $500. The scholarships are awarded each year by the APOA Northern Most Chapter to outstanding UAF justice students. Winners were chosen by a committee of law enforcement professionals. Contact: Professor Gary Copus, Justice Department, (907) 474-6501, or by e-mail: ffgdc@uaf.edu |

CPA group supports students through scholarship fund |
Two University of Alaska Fairbanks accounting students will receive money from the Alaska Society of Certified Public Accountants Paul Hagelbarger Memorial Scholarship Fund. Julie Elieff, a senior from Fairbanks and Raenne Vinette, a senior from Big Lake, Alaska, each received $2,500 from the fund. The Alaska Society of Certified Public Accountants is a professional organization for CPAs that promotes public awareness of the services and roles that CPAs provide and fulfill in public accounting, industry, government, education and civic affairs. The society also provides continuing education to meet state and national requirements and represents the professional views of its member to governmental and regulatory authorities. Many students who graduate from UAF have gone on to become ASCPA members.
