START DATE: Jan. 28, 1999
STOP DATE: Feb. 26, 1999
SUBJECT: MOOSE ALERT
LOCATION UAF Campus
DETAILS:
An increased number of moose on the UAF campus is prompting a warning about the dangers of encounters with wild animals.
Campus residents should not attempt to feed moose or try to interact with the animals. Moose can be easily frightened and can charge without notice. A large moose can seriously injure and kill a human.
A mother moose trying to protect her offspring can be especially dangerous.
When moose are spotted on campus, please notify the UAF Police Department. UAF police, along with the assistance of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, are attempting to encourage moose to move on to browsing areas off-campus by using emergency response vehicles equipped with sirens and lights.
Because of the high incidents of moose encounters, motorists are advised to use extreme caution while in the vicinity of the UAF campus.
CONTACT: UAF Police Chief Terry Vrabec, 907-474-7721.
