FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 4, 1998
Fairbanks, Alaska - The William Osborne Wood talent grant for a student in the field of publishing and editing at University of Alaska Fairbanks was doubled this semester when two unusually talented journalism majors tied for the award. Kevin A. Braum, a senior from Wisconsin, and Inge Scheve, a senior from Norway, each received $1,000 from an endowment established by former UA President William R. Wood in memory of his son, who died in 1978 at the age of 43.
Scheve is Alaska's representative to the Association of Norwegian Students Abroad, is in the Honors Program and is a member of the Golden Key Honor Society. A member of the Dean's Undergraduate Advisory Board and the Wickersham Hall Council Secretary, Scheve is also a Fairbanks Youth Soccer Association coach and is a member of the UAF cross country running and skiing team.
Braum, who was stationed at Ft. Wainwright from 1987-1990, returned to Fairbanks last year after earning a degree in mechanical design and working in that field in the Midwest. He has also logged more than 10,000 miles throughout North America as a long distance bicyclist.
The WOW talent grant is given each semester by the UAF Department of Journalism and Broadcasting in honor of William O. Wood who worked throughout his career as an editor and publisher.
Applicants for the WOW spring 1999 semester award should contact the UAF Department of Journalism and Broadcasting at 907-474-7761. Application deadline is Dec. 31. Competition for the WOW fall 1999 semester will open April 2.
