OUTSTANDING UAF STUDENTS NAMED
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Fairbanks, Alaska - More than 60 students will be honored for their achievements during the past year at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Student Awards Breakfast Saturday, April 25 at the Wood Center Ballroom. UAF Students Services Dean Carla Kirts will preside over the ceremony that begins at 9:30 a.m.
The outstanding graduating senior woman for 1998 is Danielle K. Stone, a civil and environmental engineering major. She will receive the Marion Frances Boswell Award. Cory M. Papenfuss, an electrical engineering major, will receive the Joel Wiegert Award as the outstanding graduating senior man. The Gray Tilly Memorial Award, given to the graduating senior whose education was interrupted because of family responsibilities, will be given this year to Patricia Cripps.
Outstanding graduates are chosen by a committee of faculty and staff from a field of nominees presented from the campuses. Recognition is also given to an outstanding faculty or staff member, to 1998 scholarship winners and to distinguished undergraduate students chosen by individual deans and directors.
Mary Di Cecco, the administrative assistant at the Honors Program, is the recipient of the Associated Students of the University of Alaska Fairbanks Outstanding Faculty Staff Award. ASUAF Senate Chair and President-Elect Jean Richardson will present the faculty award.
Rick Goeb, assistant director for athletics and recreation, will present the Scholar Athlete of the Year Awards to Bobbi Benson and Joacim Trybom. Benson, a dual-sport athlete, receives the award for the second consecutive year.
After the awards for university achievements are made, UAF deans will announce recognition of students by college and professional schools.
In the School of Agriculture and Land Resources Management, Brian A. Charlton will be recognized for his work in forest sciences, Dwight "Doug" Adkins for plant, animal and soil sciences, and Amy J. Morowski for resource management.
In the School of Mineral Engineering, student Kyle Brennan will be recognized for geological engineering, Michael S. Bredlie for mining engineering, and Chad A. Meyer for petroleum engineering.
In the School of Management, student Debra Moore will be recognized for accounting and information systems, Jay Gardner for business administration and Michael Orr for economics.
The schools of management, mineral engineering, agriculture and land resources were recently restructured under the College of Natural Resource Development and Management.
The College of Science, Engineering and Mathematics will recognize Jacy Pontious for biological sciences, Beth Ann Woods for chemistry, Danielle Stone for civil and environmental engineering, Orion Lawlor for computer science and mathematics, Cory Papenfuss for electrical engineering, Ben Gage for geology and geophysics, Donna Cole for physics, Christopher Morgan for mechanical engineering and Mikio Hisamatsu for wildlife.
UAF College of Rural Alaska recognition goes to Taro Kanazawa from the rural development program, April Ghalami from the Bristol Bay Campus, Machelle York from the Interior-Aleutians Campus, Forrest Jenkins and Janet Walter from the Kuskokwim Campus, and Martha Craft from the Northwest Campus.
From the Tanana Valley Campus, department recognition is given to Kerry Tully for applied accounting, Lynn Barnett for applied business, Michele Stalder for associate of arts general program, Susan Parsons for Computer Information and Office Systems management, Robert Callahan for CIOS-computer, Heather Gillette for culinary arts, Ronald Crouch for diesel and heavy equipment, Patrice Wallace for early childhood development associate of arts, Becky Stoudt for early childhood development certificate, Carol Falcetta for fire science, Yolanda Frazier for health technology, Suzanne Wright for human service technology and Inez Wright for paralegal studies.
The College of Liberal Arts will award Dena Ivey for Alaska Native Studies, Jarrod Decker for anthropology, Teresa Shannon for art, Victoria Cramer for communication, Caleb Conley for English, Rueben Loewen for Japanese studies, Barb Rusher for Spanish and French linguistics, John Bennetto for geography, Craig Kind for history, Mark Dobbins for humanities, Sara Klandt Whitney for journalism and broadcasting, and Jon Black for justice.
Also recognized in the CLA are Crystal Miles for military science, Cayenna Ponchione for music, Anthony Siebenaler for philosophy, Erik Girvan for political science, John DeRuyter for psychology, Tami Seekins for social work, Sonya Arnold for sociology and Anthony Evans for theater.
The School of Education will recognize Karly Gundersen for elementary education and Grant Kashatok for secondary education.
Eric Symmes will be recognized by the School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences.
Twenty-five students will wear the crimson cord representing leadership honors this year during commencement. The recipients, selected by UAF's student activities office, have demonstrated exceptional leadership skills and strong community service involvement throughout their career at UAF.
The student leadership award winners are: fall 1997 graduates John Mink and Scott Sanner, spring 1998 graduates Arzelie Barnes, Tammy Chang, Karen Clarke, Victoria Cramer, Anna Danell, Erik Girvan, Antonio Hernandez, Cathe Heroy, Montean Jolly, Rob Kinder, Danielle K. Stone, Greg Lotakis, Iolaire McFadden, Stephen Nuss, Evan Peter-Raboff, Nathan Platt, Nicole Putnam, Tami Seekins, Shannon Sehnert, Tim Stallard, Lisa Tamez, Jennifer Walsh and Mandi Wedin.
