NATIONAL ART EDUCATION INSTITUTE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ALASKA FAIRBANKS

Fairbanks, Alaska - An intensive, one-week National Arts Education Institute for classroom educators, art educators and artists will be offered for the first time through the University of Alaska Fairbanks Summer Sessions July 19-25.

The seminar features nationally acclaimed artists Faith Ringgold, considered one of the nation's leading African-American artists, and Joyce Kozloff, the recipient of two major National Endowment for the Arts grants, and the visiting arts critic at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine.

Other seminar presenters include: award-winning art educator Diane Kordich, the author of the instructional guide "Images of Commitment: 20th Century Women Artists;" Jacquelyn Kibbey, former art coordinator for the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District and currently assistant dean at the State University of New York, Oswego; and UAF Museum Director Aldona Jonaitis, an art historian and expert on the art of Northwest Coast Native Americans.

The one-week institute at UAF will emphasize the role art plays in education. Participants can choose either two art education workshops or one longer studio class. Evenings are open to continue class discussions, work in studios or participate in optional group activities.

Workshops will include art basics for educators, computer arts applications, art history, and teaching art concepts through an interdisciplinary approach:. Studio classes include printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, painting and Alaska Native arts.
